					</table>India has rapidly expanded domestic solar module manufacturing, while investments in cells, ingots, and wafers continue to gather pace. However, achieving a truly self-reliant manufacturing ecosystem will also require domestic production of ancillary components, including junction boxes, interconnect busbars, encapsulants, sealants, solar glass, aluminum frames, and DC cables.
In an interview on the sidelines of the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a>, Bhupendra Singh Rawat, Chief Executive Officer at <a href="https://dhashgreen.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dhash Green Energy</a>, discussed India’s ancillary manufacturing ecosystem, product reliability, quality standards, policy support, and the company&#8217;s expansion plans.
Edited excerpts from the interview.
How important is it to build a fully self-reliant domestic supply chain for the bill of materials and balance-of-system components as India scales up solar manufacturing?
Manufacturing is fundamental to every economy, and a complete value chain, including ancillary manufacturing, is essential for long-term competitiveness.
India has already made significant progress. Module manufacturing capacity now largely meets domestic demand; cell manufacturing is receiving greater emphasis; and the government has already announced the inclusion of ingots and wafers in the domestic manufacturing framework from 2028.
In ancillary manufacturing, India has already achieved a high degree of self-reliance in products such as junction boxes, encapsulants, interconnect busbars, sealants, solar glass, and aluminum frames.
Developing these capabilities is no longer only an industrial priority. Energy has become a matter of national security, making a resilient domestic supply chain strategically important.
How do junction boxes, connectors, and cables contribute to the reliability of a solar project?
Solar modules are backed by warranties of up to 30 years. Every component used in a module must therefore deliver comparable long-term reliability.
The products must undergo mechanical, electrical, and thermal stability testing. They must also be tested under humidity-freeze cycles, thermal cycling, ultraviolet exposure, and other environmental conditions. Manufacturers need strong in-house testing capabilities to ensure that products can withstand different temperatures, humidity levels, and diverse operating environments throughout the module’s life.
Dhash has invested in both scale and quality infrastructure. We have 63 GW of junction box manufacturing capacity and 25 GW of interconnect busbar capacity.
We are also backward integrated into plastic injection molding for junction boxes. In DC cables, we are establishing a capacity of 1,000 km per day using electron-beam cross-linking technology.
Each product line has its own laboratory for regular testing and long-term reliability assessments. This provides module manufacturers greater confidence in the quality and durability of the components.
Are these testing facilities available in-house?
Yes, all these facilities are in-house. We are also applying for accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories. An in-house testing facility is critical for any solar ancillary manufacturer. Quality should be embedded in the product by default.
Given the 30-year warranties offered on solar modules, every component must be capable of operating reliably under heat, humidity, temperature fluctuations, and varying climatic conditions throughout the project’s life.
India continues to depend on imports for several solar components. How quickly is domestic manufacturing catching up?
The transition is already underway. Dhash currently has about a 50% share of India’s junction box market. India has approximately 153 GW of installed junction box manufacturing capacity, which is sufficient to meet domestic module manufacturing requirements.
We entered interconnect busbar manufacturing only around five months ago and have already scaled our capacity to 25 GW. Within the next few quarters, we expect domestic production in this segment to be sufficient to support the module industry.
Other components are also catching up. Domestic sealant and encapsulant capacities have each crossed around 60 GW.
India’s current annual module demand is estimated at around 65-70 GW. Most domestic component categories are approaching that level of capacity. Solar glass may take longer due to a longer project development and commissioning cycle, but capacity is also being developed in that segment.
India is steadily moving toward self-sufficiency across the component value chain.
How has demand for domestically manufactured solar components changed in recent years?
Demand has increased significantly. Over the past two financial years, Dhash Technologies has supplied around 40 GW of junction boxes. We supplied approximately 15 GW in the financial year 2025 and around 25 GW in the financial year 2026.
This growth reflects the confidence that domestic module manufacturers have placed in Indian component suppliers. Our responsibility is to maintain that confidence by delivering reliable products, continuing to innovate, and ensuring compatibility with future solar technologies.
Should the government introduce an approved list or quality-linked framework for solar components?
India’s module manufacturing capacity expanded rapidly after the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers framework was implemented. ALMM List-II for solar cells is expected to encourage capacity additions, with substantial cell manufacturing capacity already committed by the industry.
Ancillary manufacturing needs a similar policy framework. The government could consider an approved list of ancillary manufacturers to encourage investment, ensure quality, and accelerate capacity expansion.
In addition, products such as junction boxes should be brought under Bureau of Indian Standards certification as complete products. At present, only DC cables are directly covered by product-specific standards.
What regulatory framework would you like to see for BoM and BoS components?
The first priority is product-specific classification. Many components used by the renewable energy industry are currently imported under generic Harmonized System of Nomenclature codes. This makes it difficult to accurately assess how much is being imported and how much is manufactured domestically.
Junction boxes, for example, are imported under generic tariff classifications. Interconnect busbars may enter India under several different HSN codes because no single product-specific code exists.
The government should introduce dedicated HSN codes for key renewable energy components. This would improve monitoring, transparency, and policy enforcement. We would also like to see a minimum Basic Customs Duty of 20% on these components to prevent dumping and create a level playing field for domestic manufacturers.
Junction boxes should be covered by BIS certification as a complete product. Standards for interconnect busbars are also being developed, and we are in discussions with the National Institute of Solar Energy. Once finalized, these products should also be brought under BIS.
What are Dhash Technologies’ plans for the next five years?
We are focused on remaining technology-ready as module technologies continue to evolve. Our junction boxes are compatible with mono PERC, TOPCon, heterojunction, and other emerging module technologies.
We are also developing innovative interconnect busbar products, including reflective and elliptical busbars. These designs can improve solderability due to their larger effective contact area with solar cells.
Another major product is a composite module frame, which we believe can become a transformational solution for moisture-prone and demanding environments such as Khavda and floating solar projects.
Composite frames can offer significant advantages in corrosion resistance, carbon footprint, manufacturing efficiency, and pricing.
We have commercially launched the product and are the exclusive partner of a leading global glass-roving material manufacturer. We plan to begin manufacturing the composite frames in India within the next six to eight months.

					</table>India has made significant headway in expanding its solar module and cell manufacturing capacities over the years. However, a globally competitive manufacturing ecosystem also requires a robust domestic supply chain for balance-of-system (BoS) and bill-of-materials (BoM) components, such as junction boxes, connectors, cables, and aluminum frames.
According to Srivatsa, General Manager, Sales and Technical Operations at <a href="https://www.genxpv.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GenX PV</a>, the biggest advantages of India’s domestic manufacturing ecosystem are shorter lead times and easy access to technical support. Additional financial and policy support could pave the way for a scale-up in the domestic solar component manufacturing ecosystem.
In an interview on the sidelines of the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a> on July 1 and 2 in New Delhi, Srivatsa shared his insights on localization, backward integration, domestic manufacturing, policy support, and the future of India&#8217;s solar component ecosystem.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
India has made significant progress in module and cell manufacturing. How important is it now to strengthen the domestic manufacturing of BoS and BoM components?
If you look at the industry today, India has installed module manufacturing capacity of more than 200 GW. With around 30 GW of operational capacity, cell manufacturing is catching up rapidly, and several new projects have been announced.
For junction boxes, India already has around 120-150 GW of domestic manufacturing capacity. We are seeing a clear shift from imported products to domestically manufactured components.
One of the biggest advantages of manufacturing in India is shorter lead times and readily available technical support. If any issue arises in the field, our engineering teams can visit the site and resolve it much faster than imported suppliers can.
GenX PV has expanded from manufacturing junction boxes and connectors into aluminum frames. What drove this backward integration strategy?
Backward integration has always been part of our long-term strategy.
We started with junction boxes and subsequently integrated plastic molding. We are now moving towards cable manufacturing. Over the coming years, we plan to expand to diode manufacturing. Our objective is to establish an integrated manufacturing facility where all these components are produced under one roof.
We identified aluminum frames as another opportunity because domestic manufacturing capacity in this segment is relatively limited. We plan to establish a complete manufacturing chain, from aluminum billets and extrusion to finished module frames.
Backward integration improves cost competitiveness while providing better control over quality and delivery timelines.
Today, the pricing difference between domestic products and Chinese imports has narrowed considerably. The larger concern is product dumping rather than manufacturing competitiveness.

Do you believe that India can localize the entire solar components ecosystem within the next few years?
Absolutely. For junction boxes alone, localization has already reached around 50% to 70%.
The remaining components, particularly diodes, will require additional investment and time. Over the next two years, we expect manufacturers to continue integrating backward and substantially increase localization across the value chain.
How competitive are domestically manufactured components compared to Chinese products?
From a manufacturing perspective, we are already competitive with Chinese suppliers.
The challenge arises when products are dumped into the Indian market at artificially low prices.That is where additional policy support could help domestic manufacturers compete on a more level-playing field.
What kind of policy support would benefit component manufacturers?
Junction boxes are among the few component categories for which policy protection remains limited. Currently, they attract only a 7.5% Basic Customs Duty (BCD), unlike components such as encapsulants, backsheets, or solar glass, where stronger protective measures already exist.
Additional policy support would encourage further domestic investment and accelerate manufacturing scale-up.
Module technologies continue to evolve toward TOPCon and HJT. How is GenX PV adapting to these technology transitions?
Our product portfolio has evolved with module technologies. We currently manufacture junction boxes supporting current ratings from 20 A to 35 A, covering conventional monocrystalline modules, TOPCon, M10, G12, HJT, and other advanced technologies.
We are also prepared for higher system voltages. Our products are already designed for applications up to 2,000 VDC, reflecting the way the industry is moving beyond the traditional 1,500 VDC standard.
Continuous investment in research and development enables us to keep up with evolving market requirements rather than reacting after technologies are commercialized.
Beyond financial incentives, what additional reforms would strengthen India&#8217;s component manufacturing industry?
A key area is the mandatory use of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)-certified DC cables. While several large projects already specify BIS-certified cables, currently there is no universal requirement across the industry.
Making BIS-certified cables mandatory would improve product quality, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and create a more uniform market for Indian suppliers.
How do you see India&#8217;s BoS component manufacturing industry evolving over the next few years?
The industry is expanding rapidly. As annual solar installations continue to increase, more domestic manufacturers are entering the market and building local production capacity.
Although component manufacturing still has room for growth, we expect domestic participation to increase significantly over the next two to five years.
How is the relationship between module manufacturers and domestic component suppliers evolving?
Initially, there was considerable resistance because module manufacturers had relied on imported components for many years.
Changing established procurement practices takes time.
However, once manufacturers began using domestically produced components and observed their field performance, their confidence gradually improved.
Being an Indian manufacturer gives us an important advantage. We can provide technical assistance, engineering support, and after-sales service whenever required.
Our products comply with all relevant IEC and BIS standards, undergo additional in-house testing, and have performed reliably in the field over the past five years. That performance has helped build customer confidence.
How do you ensure your products can withstand India&#8217;s diverse climatic conditions?
Every junction box is designed to operate under a wide range of environmental conditions. We conduct extensive temperature cycling and environmental testing to ensure reliable operation regardless of whether the modules are installed in Rajasthan, Karnataka, or any other climatic region.
These qualification tests ensure long-term reliability under real-world operating conditions.
What are GenX PV&#8217;s growth plans over the next five years?
Our primary focus is backward integration.
Today, we have nearly 50 GW of junction box manufacturing capacity. Plastic molding has already been integrated, cable manufacturing will commence shortly, and diode manufacturing will follow.
All these operations will eventually be consolidated into an integrated manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
We are also expanding into aluminum frame manufacturing. Beyond that, we will evaluate additional diversification opportunities as the market evolves.
Do you believe India can establish a fully integrated domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem?
Yes, I believe we are already well on our way.
Most of the BoM components required for junction box manufacturing are already produced domestically.
The remaining challenge is scaling the capacity to meet growing demand.
Consistent government policy, without major changes or reversals, will enable manufacturers to invest with confidence and accelerate the development of a fully integrated domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

					</table>India must strengthen its domestic bill-of-materials (BoM) and balance-of-system (BoS) manufacturing ecosystem to capture more value across the solar supply chain, panelists said at the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026/agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a>.
At the session “<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026/agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Solar BoM &amp; BoS Manufacturing: Expanding Value Creation Across the Solar Supply Chain</a>,” panelists discussed the growth of domestic manufacturing for solar glass, junction boxes, busbars, aluminum frames, interconnects, inverters, mounting structures, and other critical components.
The session was moderated by Priya Sanjay, Managing Director at Mercom India, and featured Bhupendra Singh Rawat, CEO at <a href="https://dhashtec.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DhaSh Green Energy</a>; Ruchi Kukreja, Head-Advocacy at <a href="https://www.hindalco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hindalco Industries</a>; and Varun Gupta, Director at <a href="https://trivenirenewables.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Triveni Renewables</a>. The session deliberated on  domestic BoM and BoS manufacturing, investment trends, technology competitiveness, supply chain resilience, and policy support.
Sanjay said the inverter market is expected to remain strong as solar installations expand across utility-scale and rooftop segments. She noted that central inverter supply grew 48% year-over-year, while string inverter supply grew 34%. Demand for module mounting structures is also expected to remain strong, with supply volumes projected to rise 29% year-over-year.
Rawat said ancillary manufacturing is now central to India’s solar manufacturing ambitions.
“Manufacturing is the core, and ancillary is a must,” Rawat said. “Ancillary manufacturing is almost 50% of the bill of material cost of a solar module.”
He said India has already built strong domestic capacity in several components, including junction boxes, cables, and interconnects, but policy support and quality enforcement will be critical to sustain growth.
Gupta said solar glass prices must be viewed in the context of global overcapacity and market correction. He said China expanded solar glass capacity sharply between 2021 and 2023, creating excess supply that later forced furnace shutdowns.
“When you say high, it means compared to what?” Gupta said. “Between 2021 and 2023, China went from 65,000-70,000 tons per day of solar glass to about 160,000 tons per day without the underlying increase in demand.”
He said China’s solar glass capacity has since declined, but the supply-demand balance is still adjusting. New glass capacity in India will also take time to come online.
“From ground zero to glass production, it takes a minimum of 26 months, even longer,” Gupta said. “The impact of duties, which came in December 2024, will start coming by the end of this year or early next year.”
Gupta said manufacturers need long-term visibility rather than reactive trade measures against individual countries.
“We cannot be just going from antidumping duty from one country to another,” he said. “At current prices, it takes five years for a payback. We need long-term policy visibility on the lines of ALMM, which gives the industry and investors’ confidence.”
Kukreja said developers and manufacturers must build stronger supplier relationships as demand for aluminum, copper, and other materials rises across the solar, electric-vehicle, and data-center sectors.
She said companies should move away from transactional sourcing and identify strategic suppliers that can provide quality, resilience through market cycles, and technical expertise.
“All manufacturers and developers have to focus on who can be a potential strategic supplier who can actually make them grow,” Kukreja said. “The supplier should be able to provide good quality products, be resilient to market cycles, and have technical expertise.”
Panelists said technical requirements are changing rapidly as modules become larger, thinner, and increasingly bifacial.
Gupta said solar glass specifications have changed significantly over the last five to seven years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“What has changed is thinner glasses, bigger sizes, and bifacial modules, which require the back glass to have holes and printing,” Gupta said. “Thicknesses have gone down from 3.2 mm to 2 mm, and manufacturers need to handle sizes up to 2.5 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width.”
However, he cautioned that module makers must carefully balance weight reduction with durability.
“While thinner glass makes the module lighter, a thicker glass definitely has more strength, ” Gupta said.
Rawat said manufacturers are also innovating in interconnects and busbars to improve module performance and reliability.
“We have offerings of reflective busbar, which also gives a little addition of output in the module,” he said.
He added that material selection is critical, especially for copper purity and alloy composition.
“The right selection is very critical-the alloy you are going to use, other than copper purity,” Rawat said. “You need to have a specific range of phosphorus, which plays a very critical role when you are doing soldering. This reduces oxidation, improves solderability, and improves overall solder strength.”
Gupta said glass manufacturing is highly energy-intensive, with gas and electricity accounting for about 40% of input costs. “That is absolutely critical “Countries like China subsidize gas or electricity. What I would want is for gas to come under GST, which could really help the industry.”
He also called for better hedging mechanisms for gas prices, saying Indian manufacturers have limited tools to protect themselves from international volatility.
“Indexes like Brent or Henry Hub are not available in the Indian market in a liquid way,” Gupta said. “It is almost impossible for individual companies like us to hedge outside the country due to RBI regulations.”
Rawat called for stronger enforcement of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirements for DC cables and junction boxes.
“Currently, junction boxes or DC cables already have BIS, although it is still not implemented,” he said. “DC cables are imported in the form of junction boxes, and it is happening freely even though BIS was announced way back in August 2023.”
He said BIS should apply to the junction box, including the cable, connector, and related components, since testing labs are available in India and only accreditation is pending.
Gupta said the solar glass industry is not seeking production-linked incentives but requires policy certainty and vigilance against duty circumvention.
“We are not looking at some kind of PLI scheme,” he said. “We are looking at long-term policy stability and a level playing field.”
He also warned that Chinese companies are moving production across countries to bypass trade barriers.
“Today it is Indonesia, tomorrow it might be Cambodia, next year Kenya, or somewhere else by Chinese companies,” Gupta said.
Panelists also highlighted risks related to access to technology and upstream chemicals. Gupta said solar glass technology has been on China’s restricted technology list for several years, and Indian companies must be careful when relying on Chinese technology suppliers. The big companies in China are not selling solar glass technology to Indian companies.”
The panel noted that India has made progress in localizing solar BoM and BoS manufacturing, but sustained growth will depend on long-term demand visibility, fair pricing, quality standards, component-level policy support, and a resilient domestic supply chain.
As India scales solar deployment, panelists said strengthening these segments can reduce import dependence, improve project economics, and help position the country as a globally competitive solar manufacturing hub.

					</table>As India expands its solar manufacturing and deployment capabilities, attention is increasingly shifting toward establishing a fully self-reliant domestic supply chain encompassing bill of materials (BoM) and balance-of-system (BoS) components.
