Transformers and Rectifiers Wins ₹10 Billion POWERGRID Transformer Order

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) (TARIL) has secured an order worth over ₹10 billion (~$105.83 million) from POWERGRID to manufacture and supply transformers of various ratings, along with associated works. The order is scheduled to be executed over 30 months.
TARIL said that the order comes as India expands and modernizes its power transmission network to support rising electricity demand and the integration of renewable energy.
TARIL manufactures power, distribution, and specialty transformers ranging from 5 MVA to 1,000 MVA and up to the 1,200 kV class. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Gujarat and serves customers in power generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy, railways, steel, and infrastructure.
The company has added 15,000 MVA of manufacturing capacity since April 2024 to meet demand from the renewable energy and medium-voltage markets. The expansion includes capacity dedicated to inverter-duty transformers and a bay for medium-voltage transformers up to 220 kV.
TARIL also completed short-circuit testing for renewable energy products including a 250 MVA, 2×33/400 kV power transformer for solar applications and an 8.8 MVA, 33/2×0.69 kV inverter-duty transformer with an aluminum winding at the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru.
Among the company’s recent milestones are a ₹7.4 billion (~$78.31 million) order from Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) and another POWERGRID order for a 420 kV three-phase reactor using synthetic organic ester insulating fluid.
Last December, TARIL secured an order valued at ₹533.3 million (~$5.93 million) from POWERGRID for the repair, erection, testing, and commissioning of a 397 MVA high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer.
The government has been pushing for increasing domestic manufacturing of 73 items, including transformers, used in the power transmission and distribution sector to formulate a comprehensive localization strategy based on criticality, feasibility, and industry readiness. India has been importing these critical items due to technology gaps, limited domestic manufacturing capabilities, or economies-of-scale challenges.
