Supported by subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar adoption in India has gained significant momentum, particularly in the residential segment, as households increasingly turn to solar power to reduce electricity costs.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India supported rooftop solar installations for over 5 million households under PM Surya Ghar since its launch in February 2024.
Shreepad Park Arena, a residential housing complex in Surat, Gujarat, has installed a 612.69 kW rooftop solar project across eight residential towers, yielding ₹5.05 million (~$52,180) in annual electricity cost savings.
The ₹28.55 million (~$295,000) project received a total subsidy of ₹12.25 million (~$126,535) for 157 eligible rooftop systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
The solar systems can offset approximately 100% of the participating households’ annual electricity requirements on a net-metering basis.
The systems were commissioned by Solnce Energy in April 2026.
Project Composition
The project comprises 158 individual rooftop solar systems installed across towers A to H.
Of the project’s total capacity, E tower accounts for the largest share at 103.32 kW across 24 systems, followed by D tower with 98.4 kW across 20 systems.
Towers C and H each have 81.18 kW of rooftop solar capacity across 22 systems. Tower G has 73.80 kW across 20 systems, while Tower B has 60.42 kW across 18 systems.
Tower F has 59.04 kW across 17 systems, and Tower A has 55.35 kW across 15 systems.
The project uses Adani Solar‘s 615 Wp solar modules and Qbits‘ inverters.
The society opted for rooftop solar as it had unused roof space across the eight residential towers. The installation eliminated the need for additional land while enabling electricity generation at the point of consumption.
Solar Generation
The rooftop solar systems are expected to generate approximately 919,035 kWh annually, averaging about 76,586 kWh per month and 2,518 kWh per day.
Based on an assumed average electricity value of ₹5.5 (~$0.057)/kWh, the project is estimated to save approximately ₹5.05 million (~$52,180) in annual electricity costs.
Households will consume electricity generated by the systems directly, while surplus generation will be exported to the grid and credited under the net-metering mechanism.
Solnce said that coordinating installations across eight residential towers was one of the primary challenges during project execution. The project involved multiple rooftops, electrical systems, and stakeholders.
The installer also had to secure approvals and net-metering connections for 158 separate consumers and design rooftop layouts and mounting structures suited to different tower configurations.
According to Mercom India Research’s Q2 and 1H 2026 India Rooftop Solar Market Report, India added 6.6 GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first half of 2026, up 131% year over year from 2.8 GW. The residential segment accounted for 84% of total rooftop solar additions during Q2 2026.
