India has supported rooftop solar installations for over 5 million households under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana since its launch in February 2024; the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced.

The Surya Ghar program has commissioned a cumulative 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity so far.

The average daily number of installations increased from 5,038 in October 2025 to approximately 16,328 in July 2026. Roughly 506,000 households received rooftop solar systems in July, the highest monthly installation figure recorded under the program.

The government has allocated ₹750.21 billion (~$7.5 billion) for the Surya Ghar program which aims to install rooftop solar systems in 10 million households by March 2027.

The government has released ₹280.24 billion (~$2.8 billion) in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer mechanism. MNRE said nearly 1.9 million participating households now receive electricity bills with no amount payable.

More than 1.2 million households earned a combined ₹4.21 billion (~$42.1 million) by selling surplus power to the grid during the financial year 2025. These earnings translated into an average annual income of about ₹3,500 (~$35) for each household exporting electricity.

Under the Utility-Led Aggregation model, 160,000 rooftop solar systems have been installed for households covered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, below-poverty-line categories, and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes across four states. The model has been approved for implementation in 12 states.

Concessional loans carrying an interest rate of 5.75%, benchmarked to the repo rate plus 50 basis points, have been approved for 2.187 million applicants. Of these, 1.75 million installations have been completed using loan financing.

MNRE said 34,219 vendors are registered under the Surya Ghar program, including 29,469 active vendors. More than 232,000 individuals received training through capacity-building programs supporting the rooftop solar sector.

The government has introduced deemed approval and waived feasibility requirements for rooftop solar systems of up to 10 kW. Thirty-two states and union territories have removed application and net-metering charges for rooftop solar installations.

The government has released ₹38.08 billion (~$380.76 million) in incentives to distribution companies and about ₹1.04 billion (~$10.4 million) to urban local bodies. It has also conducted about 23,000 third-party quality inspections.

Central ministries identified 41,542 government buildings suitable for rooftop solar installations, representing potential capacity of 1,418 MW. Of these, 25,255 buildings with 872 MW of capacity have been solarized.

State governments identified about 320,000 suitable buildings with potential capacity of 4,400 MW. Rooftop solar systems totaling 1,450 MW have been installed across 81,329 of these buildings. In total, about 106,000 government buildings have been solarized under the program.

India added 2.7 GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, a year-over-year increase of 125.4% from 1.2 GW and a 25.4% quarter-over-quarter increase from 2.2 GW, according to Mercom India Research’s Q1 2026 India Rooftop Solar Market Report.

As of this July, 3.97 million rooftop solar systems had been installed under the Surya Ghar program, benefiting approximately 4.8 million households, according to the Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.
