L&T Wins 6 GWh Battery Storage Order in the Middle East

The projects will store surplus power and supply it during peak demand

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured an order to set up three battery energy storage projects in the Middle East, with a combined storage capacity of 6 GWh.

L&T said the order valued between ₹50 billion (~$524.32 million) and ₹100 billion (~$1.05 billion).

The company’s scope of work also includes providing grid interconnections, pooling substations, and underground cables for the battery energy storage project.

Each system will feature a four-hour battery energy storage system designed. The projects will aim to support grid stability and renewable energy integration by storing surplus energy generated during off-peak periods and supplying it during periods of peak demand.

The battery storage systems will incorporate liquid cooling technology. According to L&T, the technology will provide higher power density, improved safety, and longer operational life.

In January, Heavy Civil Infrastructure, a subsidiary of L&T, secured an order from Torrent Energy Storage Solutions, an arm of Torrent Power, to construct the 3,000 MW Saidongar-1 Pumped Storage Project in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The project would comprise 10 units of 300 MW each.

In the same month, L&T Renewables secured the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts for both phases of Bihar State Power Generation Company’s (BSPGCL) 301 MW/495 MWh solar-plus- storage project in Kajra, Bihar. The first phase, comprising 185 MW solar project and a 254 MWh energy storage system, was commissioned at a cost of ₹18.1 billion (~$200.7 million). The second phase includes a 116 MW solar project and a 241 MWh energy storage system. It is scheduled for commissioning by January 2027.

The company had won BSPGCL’s engineering, procurement, and construction auction for the 116 MW solar project integrated with a 241 MWh storage system in August 2025.

Last year, L&T’s renewables business won Masdar’s EPC contract for the north site a 24/7 solar and battery storage giga-scale project in Abu Dhabi.

Global investment in battery energy storage is expected to exceed $100 billion in 2026, driven by falling technology costs and growing demand for grid flexibility as more solar and wind capacity is added to power systems.
