Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Renewables has won Bihar State Power Generation Company’s (BSPGCL) engineering, procurement, and construction of a 116 MW solar power project integrated with a 241 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kajra, Lakhisarai district, Bihar.
The project’s estimated cost is ₹10.64 billion (~$123.39 million).
The tender was floated in April 2025.
The project must be completed within 18 months.
L&T must ensure that it delivers a maximum power of 50.5 MWh for four hours.
The project must use solar modules from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s List-I under the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules.
The EPC contract win marks an extension of the earlier phase, taking the total co-located storage capacity of the renewable generation site at Lakhisarai to 495 MWh.
The BESS solution will feature liquid cooling technology, ensuring higher power density, improved safety, and extended operational life.
The deployment of a 4-hour BESS alongside intermittent solar generation will allow BSPGCL to enable energy time-shifting, allowing surplus clean energy to be stored and dispatched during peak demand periods.
The solar plus storage project will also support the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan (water, life, and greenery mission) in Bihar.
In June 2024, Larsen & Toubro secured an order to build a grid-connected 185 MW solar power project with 254 MWh BESS in Bihar’s Lakshisarai district from the BSPGCL.
In June 2024, the Ministry of Power announced the second tranche of viability gap funding (VGF) to support BESS development in India. Under this tranche, a VGF of ₹1.8 million (~$21,043)/MWh will be provided to support the development of 30 GWh of BESS capacity. The funding will be sourced from the Power System Development Fund with a total financial outlay of ₹54 billion (~$631.30 million).
