India generated approximately 43 billion units (BU) of solar power in the second quarter (Q2) of the calendar year 2025, a 19.2% year-over-year (YoY) increase. Solar generation was up by 2.5% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) from 42.1 BU.
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra were the top states for solar power generation. Rajasthan continues to be the highest generating state with 15.9 BU, followed by Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra with 5.9 BU, 4.7 BU, 4.1 BU, and 2.3 BU generated, respectively.
Solar generation in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu was up by 21% and 4.1% QoQ, respectively. In Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, solar generation was down by 13%, 10.6% and 7.4% respectively. The top five states accounted for 76.5% of the total generation in the quarter.
Despite ongoing capacity additions, quarter-on-quarter solar generation growth was modest.
The northern region generated the highest amount of solar power during the quarter, with 18.3 BU, accounting for 42.6% of the total. This was followed by the southern region with 13.4 BU and the western region with 10.7 BU, accounting for 31.1% and 25%, respectively. The eastern and northeastern regions accounted for 1% and 0.2%, respectively.
The regional differences in solar generation mainly stem from variations in installed capacity, solar potential, and infrastructure. Northern states utilize large desert areas with high solar irradiance and supportive policies to deploy substantial capacities. Southern and western states benefit from strong grid connections and favorable policy support, which enable efficient energy evacuation and expansion. In contrast, the eastern and northeastern regions encounter climatic challenges, hilly terrain, and limited investment, leading to significantly lower output.
India installed 6.7 GW of solar capacity in Q1 2025. Solar capacity additions decreased 25% YoY compared to the 9 GW installed in Q1 2024, according to Mercom India’s Q1 2025 India Solar Market Update.
