GAIL (India) has approved an investment of ₹38 billion (~$407.5 million) to set up 700 MW of solar-plus-storage projects in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The projects comprise a 600 MW solar project and a 550 MWh battery energy storage system at TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The project will supply power under a captive arrangement for GAIL’s petrochemical plant at Pata in Uttar Pradesh.

Another solar project with a capacity of 100 MW paired with a 22 MWh battery storage project will be set up in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. The project will meet the power requirements of GAIL’s propane dehydrogenation-polypropylene plant at Usar.

Deepak Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, said that GAIL’s installed renewable energy capacity will increase substantially to over 1,000 MW from the current 147 MW upon commissioning of these projects.

As per the company’s annual report for FY 2025, GAIL has an installed renewable energy capacity of 145 MW, comprising ~118 MW of wind and ~27 MW of solar.

The company has commissioned a 10 MW ground-mounted solar project at its facility in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, to meet the green power requirement of the 10 MW PEM electrolyzer.

In August 2025, a joint venture between GAIL and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam set a target to develop approximately 250 MW of wind capacity. The projects are expected to be integrated with the existing gas-based power output to ensure efficient, complementary power generation.

In 2025, GAIL announced an increase in its startup investment fund from ₹1 billion (~$11.53 million) to ₹5 billion (~$57.67 million), to be deployed to nurture promising startups focused on clean energy, renewables, energy storage, electric mobility, and digital transformation.

Last year,  GAIL floated an engineering, procurement, and construction tender for a 17.5 MW floating solar project at its facility in Uttar Pradesh.

In November 2025, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam invited bids to develop a 1 MW grid-connected ground-mounted solar project at GAIL Ajmer, Rajasthan.
