Germany-based global energy trading company Uniper Global Commodities has signed a long-term binding offtake agreement with AM Green Ammonia to purchase 500,000 tons per annum (TPA) of Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)-certified green ammonia.

RFNBO are synthetic liquid or gaseous fuels, such as synthetic liquid or gaseous fuels, made from renewable energy and captured carbon dioxide (CO2).

AM Green is expected to make the first shipment of green ammonia from its under-construction 1 million tons per annum (MTPA) facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, in 2028. This facility achieved its final investment decision in 2024.

Uniper stated that as a feedstock and a potential hydrogen carrier, renewable ammonia will help decarbonize industrial sectors, including chemicals, fertilizers, refining, and, in the long run, shipping.

“AM Green’s renewable ammonia is designed to meet stringent European RFNBO compliance standards. This is achieved through our unique firm and dispatchable clean electricity solutions,” said Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder at AM Green.

Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, stated that green ammonia offers among the lowest CO2-avoidance costs compared to other renewable energy and low-carbon molecules. It achieves this avoidance cost through its mature production process and the absence of carbon feedstock requirements.

AM Green Ammonia is a partnership among AM Green, Gentari, GIC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Apart from Kakinada, the company is developing green ammonia plants in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, and Kandla, Gujarat.

AM Green is a dedicated energy transition platform of the Greenko Group. The company is focused on producing renewable hydrogen and converting it into renewable ammonia at scale. AM Green’s portfolio includes a pumped storage project and 2.3 GW of combined wind and solar capacity.

Uniper operates in 40 countries, with core markets in Germany, the UK,  Sweden, and the Netherlands.

In 2024, Norway-based ammonia trader and distributor Yara Clean Ammonia signed a term sheet with Greenko ZeroC, the green ammonia production arm of AM Green, for the long-term supply of up to 50% of renewable ammonia from the production facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

In July 2025, Japan-based financial services group ORIX Corporation announced it would reenter a share transfer agreement to divest part of its holdings in Greenko Energy Holdings to AM Green Power.
