India’s cumulative rooftop solar installations reached ~8.3 GW at the end of the January-September period (9M), according to Mercom India Research’s latest available data.

The full-year numbers for 2022 will be released in February.

Here is a look at the cumulative rooftop installations in the top five states as on September 30:

#1 Gujarat topped the list accounting for 23% of the total installed capacity in the country.

Out of the total capacity installed, 650 MW was part of the 750 MW tender floated by Paschim Gujarat Vij Company (PGVCL). Madhya Gujarat Vij Company also issued two empanelment tenders under the Phase-II grid-connected rooftop solar program of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the SURYA Gujarat program.

During the year, the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) amended the GERC (Net Metering Rooftop Solar PV Grid Interactive Systems) Regulations 2016. The new regulations allowed net metering for rooftop solar systems having a capacity of 1 kW and up to 1 MW. Gross metering for rooftop solar systems with 10 kW and up to 1 MW capacity was also permitted.

Various agencies in the state floated tenders for an aggregate capacity of 1 GW of rooftop solar projects during the year.

#3 Rajasthan was the third leading state, accounting for 10% of the total rooftop solar installations at the end of nine months of the calendar year 2022. However, capacity additions in the state have witnessed a steady decline in the recent past due to delays in subsidy disbursements and net metering approvals.

In 2022, various agencies in the state issued tenders for 181 MW of rooftop solar projects.
