<p>A separate solar and non-solar renewable purchase obligations (RPO) system should be reviewed according to Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Power.</p>
<p>If what’s been proposed by Mr. Goyal comes to fruition, it will be a big boost for the renewable energy sources, especially wind, as it will allow states to utilize renewable energy certificates (REC) in a manner that is beneficial to their individual state needs. The move will also pave way for the states to utilize their entire renewable energy potential and consumers could also benefit as they will get power at competitive rates.</p>
<p>Mr. Piyush Goyal, while attending the power purchase agreement signing ceremony for 1,050 MW wind power projects said, “The transmission is being developed for a greener future and we should relook into the system of separate renewable purchase obligations (RPOs) (solar and non-solar). If a state conducive to wind wants to have 100 percent wind projects as part of its RPO it should be allowed and the same for solar. In this manner, no state will be burdened with a costly technology and consumers will get power at competitive tariffs.”</p>
<p>Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/breaking-supreme-court-issues-order-allowing-wind-rec-trade/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously reported</a> that the Supreme Court of India issued an order allowing the trade in Wind RECs.</p>
