					</table><p>Researchers have developed a high-energy, high-power hybrid sodium-ion battery that could be a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries.</p>
<p>Led by Jeung Ku Kang, a team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (<a href="http://www.kaist.ac.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KAIST</a>) and <a href="https://www.lbl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a> has found a way to enhance sodium-ion hybrid energy storage systems through an innovative hybrid energy storage system that integrates anode and cathode materials.</p>
<p>Sodium, a metal 500 times more abundantly available than lithium, shows much promise for electrochemical storage technologies. While iron-based sulfides are environmentally non-toxic, low-cost, and promising anode materials, they have low electrical conductivity, significant volume change during charging/discharging cycles, and slow kinetics.</p>
<p>This necessitated the development of next-generation energy storage materials.</p>
<p>In a recent paper in the <em>Energy Storage Materials</em> journal, the researchers said they combined these materials to allow for high energy density, rapid charging capabilities, and robust long-term stability over many charging cycles, addressing the limitations plaguing sodium-ion technologies.</p>
<p>Sodium-ion hybrid energy storage cells that can use the different potential windows of capacitor-type cathodes and battery-type anodes have attracted a lot of attention because they could, in principle, simultaneously allow for high energy density and fast-rechargeable power density.</p>
<p>The team synthesized iron sulfide-embedded S-doped carbon or graphene (FS/C/G) anode materials from the iron-based metal-organic framework or graphene oxide heterostructures via graphitic carbon formation and sulfidation.</p>
<p>This optimized the balance and minimized the disparities in energy storage rates between the electrodes.</p>
<p>They also achieved high-energy density and fast-rechargeable sodium ion cells by developing a low-crystallinity multivalence iron FS/C/G anode and a ZIF-derived porous carbon cathode.</p>
<p>Through this, the team was able to offer a more abundant and potentially cheaper alternative to lithium-ion systems, which will be especially useful for large-scale energy storage applications.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Australian and American researchers <a href="https://mercomindia.com/new-sodium-ion-battery-scale-energy-storage#:~:text=A%20team%20of%20researchers%20from,of%20aqueous%20batteries:%20water%20decomposition." target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed</a> a new type of aqueous sodium-ion battery that they claimed would last for over 13,000 charge cycles.</p>
<p>In February 2024, another team from Liverpool University <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/researchers-discover-new-fast-material" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discovered</a> a solid material that rapidly conducts lithium-ions, which consists of non-toxic, earth-abundant materials.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/rec-records-highest-9m-profit-%e2%82%b9100-billion-fy24" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Public infrastructure finance company </strong><strong>REC Limited</strong><strong> recorded a revenue of ₹120 billion (~$1.44 billion) for the third quarter (Q3) of the financial year (FY) 2023-24</strong></a>, a 23.56% year-over-year (YoY) increase from ₹97.12 billion (~$1.17 billion). The company attributed the performance during the quarter to improved asset quality, increased lending rates, and effective management of financing costs.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/waaree-renewable-profit-surges-q3-fy24" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Waaree Renewable Technologies</strong><strong>, the solar engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) arm of the Waaree Group, posted a net profit of ₹644.6 million (~$7.7 million) in Q3</strong></a> of the FY 2024, an increase of 158% YoY from ₹249.8 million (~$3 million). The increase in net profit could be attributed to the increase in the EPC orders won and executed by the company during the period. The company executed ~208 MW of EPC projects during the quarter.</p>

<p>The findings, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-44855-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nature Communications</a>, show that the researchers created an alkaline, rather than neutral, electrolyte that suppresses water splitting into oxygen and hydrogen.</p>
<p>Traditional aqueous batteries, like lead-acid batteries, contain water-based electrolytes. While safe and low-cost, a downside is that the water can decompose during battery cycling, producing hydrogen gas that limits battery lifespan and poses safety risks.</p>
<p>However, alkaline conditions can trigger corrosion of the battery cathode. To prevent this, the researchers coated the cathode with nickel/carbon nanoparticles, which created a locally acidic environment at the cathode surface to mitigate corrosion.</p>
<p>The nickel coating had another benefit &#8211; some nickel atoms embedded into the cathode, reinforcing its structure against degradation. This combination of the tailored alkaline electrolyte and nickel-carbon coating led to the coin cell battery maintaining 85% of its initial capacity after 1,000 charge/discharge cycles.</p>
<p>The alkaline solution is also cheaper than current methods to boost water stability, which contains expensive fluorine salts and the addition of potentially flammable co-solvents to the electrolyte to reduce water activity.</p>
<p>According to the researchers, the aqueous sodium-ion battery demonstrated an energy density of 90 Wh/kg, which is good for an aqueous battery but still lower than the 120-260 Wh/kg seen in lithium-ion batteries. However, unlike lithium, sodium has a high natural abundance on the planet, which helps lower costs.</p>
<p>The researchers believe it could enable large-scale energy storage to support renewables and electric vehicles if it can be successfully commercialized. It could also be useful for underwater electronics due to its safety and long lifetime.</p>
<p>There is research in other sodium-ion battery chemistries emerging to address the challenges in performance and cost. Pune-headquartered KPIT Technologies in December <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/india-based-kpit-unveils-ion-battery-technology" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveiled</a> a sodium-ion battery technology with 80% capacity retention for 3,000-6,000 cycles and energy density ranging from 100-170 Wh/Kg.</p>
<p>In May, scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/iit-researchers-make-headway-sodium-ion-batteries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> a breakthrough in developing sodium-ion batteries by addressing the challenges of air/water instability and structural-cum-electrochemical instability in cathode materials.</p>
