					</table><p>The <a href="https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netherlands</a> has presented a new climate package worth €28 billion (~$31 billion) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, in line with the EU&#8217;s target of reducing net emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990.</p>
<p>The package includes a range of measures to reduce CO2 emissions by 22 megatons by 2030 and make the electricity sector carbon-free by 2035 through 3 GW offshore floating solar by 2030, converting gas-fired power stations to hydrogen, and making batteries obligatory for solar parks.</p>
<p>In addition, the government has set aside €7.4 billion (~$8.18 billion) for hydrogen-related projects, including onshore and offshore, green hydrogen imports, and derisking large-scale hydrogen storage.</p>
<p>The Dutch government&#8217;s climate package focuses on various sectors, such as housing, transport, industry, and energy.</p>
<p>One of the most important measures is improving the insulation in the homes of low-income people, who can receive up to €425 million (~$470 million) in funding. This will help save energy and reduce emissions, combat energy poverty, and improve the quality of life.</p>
<p>Another measure is to stimulate the purchase of second-hand electric vehicles with €600 million (~$663 million) in subsidies, facilitating the transition to clean transport and reducing air pollution.</p>
<p>The government is also investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, and is betting on building smaller nuclear reactors.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the package includes blending gasoline and diesel with biofuels, which will increase the price of gasoline. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.</p>
<p>The country’s Climate and Energy Policy Minister, Rob Jetten, said, &#8220;The Netherlands has pursued climate goals for years. Now it&#8217;s time to take a significant leap. At the same time, all Dutch people must be able to experience the transition, especially those who are less likely to. Climate policy must be inclusive and benefit everyone. That is why we will use subsidies to encourage more solar panels to be installed on rental homes and work on making the most draughty houses in the most vulnerable neighborhood more sustainable as a priority.&#8221;</p>
<p>Netherlands-based transmission system operator TenneT had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/tennet-contracts-offshore-wind-grid-development" target="_blank" rel="noopener">awarded</a> contracts worth approximately €30 billion (~$33 billion) to four partners to deliver eight offshore grid connection systems in the Netherlands and Germany. These systems will link offshore wind farms in the Dutch sector of the North Sea to high-voltage grids on land.</p>
<p>European Commission had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/eu-mandate-use-renewable-produce-hydrogen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proposed</a> a detailed new framework for green hydrogen producers within the EU and from other countries exporting to the region to ensure it is produced using renewable electricity.</p>

Netherlands to Spend €28 Billion on New Climate Package

					</table><p><strong>Here are some noteworthy cleantech announcements of the day from around the world:</strong></p>
<p><strong>NTPC </strong><a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/d2c972d6-0f4f-46c0-a262-5e585e1a0179.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> that the last 20 MW capacity out of the 100 MW Ramagundam floating solar project had been commissioned.</strong> With this, the standalone installed and commercial capacity of NTPC has grown to 54.77 GW. The NTPC group’s installed and commercial capacity is now 69.13 GW.</p>
<p><strong>ReNew Power, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA), </strong><a href="https://renewpower.in/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FINAL_ReNew-SEWA-UNEP-Salt-pan-project-launch-Press-Release_30062022.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>launched</strong></a><strong> a transformative initiative named ‘Project Surya’</strong> to train low-income women salt pan workers to work in the renewable industry. Under the program, women salt pan workers, who work in the physically challenging and extreme temperatures of the remote Rann of Kutch marshes in Gujarat, will be trained as solar panel and solar pump technicians. This unique and inclusive project will address multiple sustainable development goals under one umbrella, including no poverty, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, decent work, economic growth, and climate action.</p>
<p><strong>Impact Clean Power Technology has </strong><a href="https://icpt.pl/en/impact-will-build-gigafactoryx-it-will-become-one-of-the-largest-producers-of-battery-systems-for-transportation-in-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>started</strong></a><strong> the construction of a modern battery systems factory – GigafactoryX – for the public transport, railroad sector, and stationary energy storage for both the energy sector and individual users</strong>. The investment will multiply the company’s production capacity up to 5 GWh per year. The GigafactoryX project assumes the construction of a giant battery factory for electric vehicles. The start of production has been planned for 2024 and will guarantee the security of the supply of battery systems for the world’s largest brands. The new production lines will be highly automated, affecting not only production efficiency and the quality of produced batteries but also reducing carbon dioxide emissions.</p>
<p><strong>Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten </strong><a href="https://www.gasunie.nl/en/news/gasunie-starts-construction-of-national-hydrogen-network-in-the-netherlands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a><strong> plans for the construction of a national transport network for hydrogen. Gasunie will develop the hydrogen network in the Netherlands in the coming years, after which it will assume the role of </strong>a t<strong>ransmission system operator. </strong>Gasunie will also play an important role in the storage and import of hydrogen. Due to the expected growth in offshore hydrogen production in the North Sea, the minister will investigate whether Gasunie can also fulfill the role of grid operator at sea.</p>
<p><strong>Voltalia, an international player in renewable energies, has </strong><a href="https://www.voltalia.com/news-releases/news-release-details/albania-voltalia-launches-construction-karavasta-project-largest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a><strong> the construction of the Karavasta site, a 140 MW photovoltaic project. </strong>The 140 MW project was awarded to Voltalia by the Albanian Council of Ministers in 2020, following the competitive bidding process launched by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. According to the terms of the tender, Karavasta will sell 50% of the electricity through a 15-year sales contract to the Albanian public operator, while the remaining will be sold through long-term contracts to private operators. The project is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2023.</p>

Daily News Wrap-Up: NTPC Commissions 100 MW Floating Solar Project at Ramagundam

<p>Solar energy accounted for 10% of the European Union&#8217;s (EU) electricity during the peak summer months of June and July this year, energy think tank <a href="https://ember-climate.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ember</a> has revealed.</p>
<p>Solar power generation stood at 39 TWh in June-July 2021, compared to 28 TWh in the same period in 2018. Solar generation in the EU increased by 5.1 TWh between June-July 2020 and 2021, a 64% surge year-over-year compared to 2020 when 3.1 TWh of solar was generated.</p>
<p>Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Spain saw record solar generation during the year&#8217;s summer peak. Netherlands and Spain have doubled their solar share since June-July 2018. Estonia and Poland have gone from near-zero solar in 2018 to 10% and 5% respectively in June-July 2021.</p>
<p>For the first time, solar generation overtook coal power in Hungary in summer 2021. Hungary has quadrupled its solar share from 3% of electricity in June-July 2018 to 12% this summer. In comparison, Hungary&#8217;s coal power fell from 17% in June-July 2018 to just 10%.</p>
<p>Seven EU countries generated more than 10% of their electricity from solar in June-July 2021. Leading the way was The Netherlands, which generated 17% of its electricity from solar. In comparison, Germany generated 17% of its electricity from solar and Spain 16%. Greece and Italy both generated 13% of their electricity from solar.</p>
<p>Ember also found that despite recent gains, the EU&#8217;s electricity generation from solar remains less than coal power plants, which generated 58 TWh or 14% of the EU&#8217;s electricity even during the summer peak.</p>
<p>The EU has added 14 TWh of solar energy every year on average in the last two years. However, according to the European Commission, annual growth in the next decade must double to 30 TWh to meet the EU&#8217;s new 2030 climate targets.</p>
<p>Solar electricity is cheaper than existing fossil fuel plants across major markets, including Germany, the UK, Italy, France, and Spain.</p>
<p>According to the analysis, the global average levelized cost of electricity for utility-scale solar has reduced from $381/MWh in 2010 to $57/MWh in 2020.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Ember and Agora Energiwendehad <a href="https://mercomindia.com/renewables-overtake-fossil-fuels-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a report that revealed renewables overtook fossil fuels as the EU&#8217;s primary source of electricity due to the rapid growth of clean energy and the decline of coal power.</p>
<p>In November 2020, the European Commission <a href="https://mercomindia.com/european-commission-plans-offshore-wind/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveiled</a> a strategy to help achieve the EU&#8217;s climate neutrality target by 2050. The plan suggested increasing Europe&#8217;s offshore wind capacity up to 60 GW by 2030 and 300 GW by 2050, from its existing capacity of 12 GW.</p>
