					</table><p>A new lithium-ion battery, which includes a cathode based on organic materials instead of metals such as cobalt or nickel, has been designed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MIT</a>).</p>
<p>Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which commonly contain cobalt and nickel; the former has been associated with high financial, environmental, and social costs.</p>
<p>In a new study in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/journal/acscii" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ACS Central Science</a>, the researchers have proven that this new material, which can be produced at a much lower cost than batteries containing cobalt, can conduct electricity at rates similar to those of these batteries. The new battery can be charged up faster with comparable storage capacity than cobalt batteries.</p>
<p>“It is already competitive with incumbent technologies, and it can save a lot of the cost and pain and environmental issues related to mining the metals that currently go into batteries,” said Mircea Dincă, the W.M. Keck Professor of Energy at MIT. She added that this material could potentially have a big impact.</p>
<p>Most EVs are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which have a cathode made of cobalt, a metal known for its high stability and energy density. But as a scarce metal, cobalt extraction has been associated with hazardous working conditions and the generation of toxic waste that contaminates the surrounding land, air, and water.</p>
<p>As a result, a lot of research is being done to scope out alternatives for cobalt. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine (<a href="https://uci.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UCI</a>) also developed a method that offers a long-lasting alternative made of nickel. Japan-based <a href="https://www.global.toshiba/ww/top.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Toshiba Corporation</a> also developed a lithium-ion battery that was cobalt-free and cathode material, which significantly suppressed the gases produced from operations.</p>
<p>The researchers at MIT mention that the primary materials needed to manufacture this type of cathode are a quinone precursor and an amine precursor, both of which are already commercially available and produced in large quantities as commodity chemicals.</p>
<p>They further estimate that the material cost of assembling these organic batteries could be about one-third to one-half the cost of cobalt batteries.</p>
<p>These developments if they come to fruition might hamper Indonesia’s plans to capitalize on the metal, as its global output share is <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/indonesia-cobalt-demand-for-evs-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated</a> to touch 19% by 2030.</p>
<p>In India, Reliance New Energy Limited also recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/birla-carbon-acquires-battery-materials-nanocyl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acquired</a> all assets of Lithium Werks, a  cobalt-free lithium-ion phosphate battery manufacturer, at $61 million in 2022.</p>

MIT Scientists Develop Long-Lasting, Cobalt-Free Batteries for EVs

					</table><p>The <a href="https://aemoservices.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) Services</a> has received bids for over 8 GW of wind, solar, and long-duration storage projects in the first round of the inaugural tendering process of the New South Wales (NSW) Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.</p>
<p>The roadmap is expected to fetch households and individuals value for money by lowering electricity bills.</p>
<p>Of the total capacity, AEMO has received bids for over 5.5 GW of wind and solar and 2.5 GW of long-duration storage projects, which will power approximately 2.4 million NSW households.</p>
<p>The costs under the roadmap will mainly relate to supporting investment in new generation and supporting operators to build new network infrastructure.</p>
<p>The new costs are expected to begin to be passed through late 2023 and will not be itemized separately on bills but will instead be bundled up amongst other network charges.</p>
<p>AEMO Services is serving as the customer trustee of NSW and will assess the bids.</p>
<p>The selected bidders will be awarded long-term energy service agreements, underwriting the delivery of built energy resources that will benefit the long-term interests of the power consumers in the State.</p>
<p>The Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap is the <a href="https://www.nsw.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NSW government</a>&#8216;s strategy to equip Australia with a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable electricity system. The roadmap will help attract investment in transmission, generation, storage, and firming infrastructure as aging coal-fired generation plants retire and is enabled by the Electricity Infrastructure Investment Act 2020, which was passed into law in December 2020.</p>
<p>The tender process involves two kinds of entities, the first being investment coordinators and regulators being the second, which include the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).</p>
<p>&#8220;The best way to provide structural, long-term relief from high electricity bills is to drive in new supply and put downward pressure on energy prices at the source, which is exactly what our Roadmap is doing,&#8221; observed NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean.</p>
<p>AEMO said that currently, there is no tender fee announced, while future gazetted tender rules may include a fee for the bidders to participate in the tender rounds.</p>
<p>The projects must have a generation capacity of not less than 30 MW. They must consist of storage units with registered capacity that can be dispatched for at least eight hours.</p>
<p>The respective bidders managing the projects must submit a community engagement plan that will become contractually binding after awarding the contract.</p>
<p>AEMO Services will assess the location in the NSW region where the respective projects&#8217; infrastructure will be constructed or operated. It will also evaluate the type of technology or fuel that may be used to build or operate the project infrastructure.</p>
<p>Recently, the Australian government <a href="https://mercomindia.com/australia-commits-16-billion-clean-energy-spending-2026/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">committed</a> AU$25 billion (~$16.2 billion) in renewable energy spending until 2026 under the Powering Australia Plan, which also includes upgrading, expanding, and modernizing the country&#8217;s power grid to cut the power costs.</p>
<p>Another Australian state, Queensland, has <a href="https://mercomindia.com/queensland-spend-a62-billion-develop-renewable-supply-chain/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">planned</a> to spend A$62 billion (~$40.11 billion) over the next 15 years to build a robust renewable supply chain in the Australian State.</p>
