					</table><p>India needs to add 412.82 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2032 to meet the peak demand and energy requirement for the financial year (FY) 2031-32, according to the &#8216;National Electricity Plan&#8217; draft published by Central Electricity Authority (<a href="https://cea.nic.in/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CEA</a>).</p>
<p>Stakeholders must submit their comments and suggestions by December 05, 2022.</p>
<p>India has <a href="https://mercomindia.com/solars-share-installed-power-capacity-mix-q2-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">achieved</a> a cumulative installed renewable energy capacity (including large hydro) of 159.81 GW. The projected electrical energy requirement and peak electricity demand on an all-India basis are estimated as 1,874 billion units (BU) and 272 GW for the year 2026-27 and 2,538 BU and 363 GW for 2031-32.</p>
<p><strong>Installed Capacity</strong></p>
<p>The capacity addition required during 2022-27 to meet the peak demand and energy requirement for the year 2026-27 is 228.54 GW comprising 40.63 GW of conventional capacity and 187.9 GW of renewable capacity, including large hydro (10.95 GW), solar (132.08 GW), wind (40.5 GW), biomass (2.31 GW), and pumped storage projects (2.7 GW). This estimate excludes 5.85 GW of likely hydro-based imports.</p>
<p>The draft states that the estimated renewable energy installed capacity will likely be 344.51 GW by 2026-27 and 569.42 GW by 2031-32.</p>

<p><strong>Electricity Generation</strong></p>
<p>Based on the projections of capacity addition targets from renewable sources by 2026-27 and considering a renewable capacity addition of 224.9 GW between 2027 and 2032, expected electricity generation from various renewable sources has been estimated at 667.2 BU by 2026-27 and 1144.4 BU by 2031-32. The contribution of renewables will be around 35.6% of the country&#8217;s total energy in 2026-27 and 45.09% by 2031-32.</p>

<p><strong>Energy Storage</strong></p>
<p>According to generation planning studies, pumped storage projects (PSP) based storage capacity of about 6.81 GW with 46.65 GWh of storage is required the by the year 2026-27 to fulfill the storage requirements of the grid. The storage capacity requirement increases to 70.38 GW (18.82 GW PSP and 51.56 GW battery energy storage system (BESS)) with storage of 392.78 GWh (135 GWh from PSP and 257.78 GWh from BESS) by the year 2031-32. A 5-hour BESS is found to be operating prominently in single-cycle mode throughout the year.</p>
<p>As of March 2022, there are eight PSP projects in the country totaling 4.74 GW, out of which projects with a capacity of 3.3 GW are currently functioning in pumped mode. CEA has identified a PSP potential of 96.52 GW in different parts of the country. Western India has the highest PSP potential at 37.84 GW due to its topography.</p>
<p>The draft electricity plan says lithium-ion batteries are the most promising for both small and large-scale electricity storage in power generation. Due to technological innovations and improved manufacturing capacity, lithium-ion chemistries have experienced a steep price decline since inception. The cost trajectory of battery energy storage systems is projected to decline.</p>
<p>Hydrogen could provide additional utility-scale energy storage options and unique opportunities to integrate the transportation and power sectors. Although hydrogen is currently a high-cost option, it offers some advantages over competing technologies due to its high storage energy density and potential for co-firing in a combustion turbine with natural gas.</p>
<p><strong>Funds Required</strong></p>
<p>To meet the generational capacity additions targets of 40.63 GW from conventional sources and 187.9 GW from renewable energy sources, the total fund requirement for 2022-2027 is estimated to be ₹14.31 trillion (~$179.45 billion). For 2027-2032, ₹17.16 trillion (~$215.19 billion) would be required to meet the generational capacity additions targets of 18.13 GW from conventional sources and 224.9 GW from renewable energy sources, and 51.5 GW of 5-hour battery storage.</p>
<p>India is likely to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-likely-have-energy-surplus-during-2022-23-cea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have</a> an energy surplus of 2.9% and a peak surplus of 3.4% for the year 2022-23, according to the CEA’s Load Generation Balance Report.</p>
<p>The all-India peak power demand <a href="https://mercomindia.com/peak-power-demand-touches-all-time-high-of-201-gw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">touched</a> an all-time high of 201.066 GW on April 26, 2022, surpassing the peak power demand of 200.539 GW met on July 7, 2021.</p>

India Must Add 188 GW of Renewable Capacity in the Next Five Years to Meet Peak Demand: CEA

<p>India’s power supply deficit stood at 0.6% during the financial year (FY) 2018-19, just 0.1% down from the figures reported during <a href="https://mercomindia.com/avg-peak-power-deficit-2017-18/">FY 2017-18</a>.</p>
<p>During FY 2018-19, 1,267,209 million units (MUs) of electricity were supplied against the requirement of 1,274,564 MUs. This was 7,355 MUs lesser than the targeted energy requirement, according to the data provided by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).</p>
<p>Mercom had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/peak-demand-yoy-march-2019/">previously</a> reported that the energy supplied in March 2019 was 110 billion units (BUs), an increase of 4% from 106 BUs supplied in March 2018. Compared to February 2019, the energy supplied was 15 BUs more.</p>

<p>According to CEA’s 2018 <a href="https://mercomindia.com/cea-report-ndia-energy-surplus-2018-19/">Load Generation Balance Report</a>, India was expecting a power surplus of 4.6% based on the assumption that the country’s peak demand will reach 185,122 MW with a peak surplus of 2.5% during the FY 2018-19.</p>
<p>During the FY 2018-19, the CEA expected peak surplus of 2.5% in the country, but in actuality, there was a power deficit of 0.8% which can be attributed to the <a href="https://mercomindia.com/cant-curtail-solar-at-convenience-tnerc/">curtailment</a> of power in some of the states for various reasons, including a lack of transmission access or transmission congestion. However, the power deficit dropped by 1.6% when compared to FY 2017-18.</p>
<p>The northeastern region faced the highest power supply deficit of 2.8%, as well as the peak power deficit of 3.9% during FY 2018-19. On the other hand, the southern region witnessed just 0.1% of power supply deficit and recorded zero peak power deficit in the country. The northern and eastern regions registered power deficits of 2.3% and 1.8% respectively.</p>

<p>According to the CEA report, power generation in India grew by 3.56% in FY 2018-19. The western, southern, eastern and northeastern regions of India accounted for the fastest growth in India’s generation capacity.</p>
<p>Power generation in the northeastern region grew by 7.66%, in the western region by 6.52%, in the southern region by 3.99%, and in the eastern region by 3.04%. The northern region witnessed a negative growth of 0.72%, compared to FY 2017-18.</p>
<p>The CEA forecast has missed the mark 2 years in a row. According to last year’s LGBR study, India expected a power surplus of 8.8% and peak surplus of 6.8% in the country during FY 2017-18. The forecast turned out to be aggressive considering India’s <a href="https://mercomindia.com/avg-peak-power-deficit-2017-18/">actual power supply deficit</a> came in at 0.7%, and peak power deficit was 2% during financial year (FY) 2017-18.</p>

India’s Peak Power Deficit During FY 2018-19 Was 0.6%

<p>According to a Central Electricity Authority&#8217;s (<a href="http://www.cea.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CEA</a>) provisional report, India recorded a power supply deficit of 0.6 percent in the nine-month period between April and December 2018. During this period, 965,589 million units (MUs) of energy were supplied against the demand of 971,490 MUs. This implies a deficit of 5,901 MUs over the targeted energy requirement.</p>
<p>In the same period, against a peak demand of 177,022 MUs of electricity, 175,528 MUs were supplied. This was 1,494 MUs less than the required supply to meet the peak demand, resulting in a peak power supply deficit of 0.8 percent.</p>
<p>Even though the energy generation increased, the supply deficit dropped by 0.1 percent and the peak power deficit has increased by 0.6 percent when compared to the same period in 2017.</p>

<p>The northeastern region was again the region recording the highest supply deficit of 3.1 percent from April to December 2018, followed by the northern region at 1.3 percent, eastern region at 0.8 percent, southern region at 0.2 percent, and western region at 0.1 percent.</p>
<p>During the same period, the peak power deficit was slightly more in the northeastern and northern region, recording 3.9 percent and 2.3 percent respectively. On the other hand, the eastern, western, and southern regions of India accounted for a peak power deficit of 1.8, 1.5, and 0.6 percent respectively.</p>
<p>According to the CEA, India’s power generation grew by 4.74 percent in the nine-month period of 2018. Power generation in the northeastern region grew by 9.31 percent, in the western region by 7.13 percent, in the southern region by 6.64 percent, in the eastern region by 4.75 percent, and in the northern region by 0.11 percent.</p>
<p>Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-power-supply-deficit-apr-sep-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">previously reported</a> that India recorded a low power supply deficit of 0.6 percent during the period April to September 2018.</p>
<p>In the latest Load Generation Balance Report (<a href="https://mercomindia.com/cea-report-ndia-energy-surplus-2018-19/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LGBR</a>), which studies the anticipated power supply position for FY 2018-19, the CEA forecasts that India is likely to have a peak surplus of 2.5 percent and an energy surplus of 4.6 percent.</p>
<p>The data sometimes is contradicting with the reality on the ground as power cuts continue to occur in many parts of the country.</p>

India’s Power Supply Deficit Stood at 0.6% During April-December 2018

<p><strong> </strong>Albania, a country in the Balkan peninsula, has selected a group led by <a href="http://www.indiapower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India Power Corporation Ltd. </a>to build its first solar power project, reported Reuters.</p>
<p>The project capacity is 100 MW and expected to cost €70 million ($79.34 million).</p>
<p>Apart from India Power Corporation Ltd., Mining Resources FZE based in the United Arab Emirates and the Hong Kong-based Midami Ltd. have been selected for the project. They were chosen as the best combination of technical and financial credibility, price and additional capacity, according to the country’s <a href="https://www.ctc-n.org/about-ctcn/organisations/republic-albania-ministry-energy-and-industry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ministry of Energy.</a></p>
<p>More than 90 percent of Albania’s power is generated from rivers and a newly-built power plant, but it often faces rampant cooling problem. Keeping this in view, Albania now wants to install 120 MW of solar and 70 MW of wind power capacity by 2020 to meet its energy requirements.</p>
<p>The solar project is expected to be complete in 18 months. Out of 100 MW, 50 MW will be sold to the local distributor at €59.9 (~$67.39) per MW for a period of 15 years. Remaining 50 MW will be sold at market prices.</p>
<p>This auction has discovered one of the lowest energy prices in the region. The price “is lower than the €63 (~$70.87) /MW in Greece and Turkey and also below the average import price,” said Energy Ministry of Albania.</p>
<p>Albania’s interest in the Indian company rests on its record of having more than 1,500 MW capacity of thermal, wind, and solar power. After the negotiations of the contract, this will be the first major investment by an Asian company in Albania except China.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-power-green-utility-punj-lloyd-co-develop-20-mw-solar-uttarakhand/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earlier</a>, Mercom reported that India Power Green Utility Private Limited (IPGUPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of India Power Corporation Limited, announced that it would co-develop 20 MW of solar in Uttarakhand in partnership with Punj Lloyd.</p>
