					</table><p>India must strengthen its domestic bill-of-materials (BoM) and balance-of-system (BoS) manufacturing ecosystem to capture more value across the solar supply chain, panelists said at the <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026/agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026</a>.</p>
<p>At the session “<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/mercom-india-renewables-summit-2026/agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Solar BoM &amp; BoS Manufacturing: Expanding Value Creation Across the Solar Supply Chain</a>,” panelists discussed the growth of domestic manufacturing for solar glass, junction boxes, busbars, aluminum frames, interconnects, inverters, mounting structures, and other critical components.</p>
<p>The session was moderated by Priya Sanjay, Managing Director at Mercom India, and featured Bhupendra Singh Rawat, CEO at <a href="https://dhashtec.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DhaSh Green Energy</a>; Ruchi Kukreja, Head-Advocacy at <a href="https://www.hindalco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hindalco Industries</a>; and Varun Gupta, Director at <a href="https://trivenirenewables.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Triveni Renewables</a>. The session deliberated on  domestic BoM and BoS manufacturing, investment trends, technology competitiveness, supply chain resilience, and policy support.</p>
<p>Sanjay said the inverter market is expected to remain strong as solar installations expand across utility-scale and rooftop segments. She noted that central inverter supply grew 48% year-over-year, while string inverter supply grew 34%. Demand for module mounting structures is also expected to remain strong, with supply volumes projected to rise 29% year-over-year.</p>
<p>Rawat said ancillary manufacturing is now central to India’s solar manufacturing ambitions.</p>
<p>“Manufacturing is the core, and ancillary is a must,” Rawat said. “Ancillary manufacturing is almost 50% of the bill of material cost of a solar module.”</p>
<p>He said India has already built strong domestic capacity in several components, including junction boxes, cables, and interconnects, but policy support and quality enforcement will be critical to sustain growth.</p>
<p>Gupta said solar glass prices must be viewed in the context of global overcapacity and market correction. He said China expanded solar glass capacity sharply between 2021 and 2023, creating excess supply that later forced furnace shutdowns.</p>
<p>“When you say high, it means compared to what?” Gupta said. “Between 2021 and 2023, China went from 65,000-70,000 tons per day of solar glass to about 160,000 tons per day without the underlying increase in demand.”</p>
<p>He said China’s solar glass capacity has since declined, but the supply-demand balance is still adjusting. New glass capacity in India will also take time to come online.</p>
<p>“From ground zero to glass production, it takes a minimum of 26 months, even longer,” Gupta said. “The impact of duties, which came in December 2024, will start coming by the end of this year or early next year.”</p>
<p>Gupta said manufacturers need long-term visibility rather than reactive trade measures against individual countries.</p>
<p>“We cannot be just going from antidumping duty from one country to another,” he said. “At current prices, it takes five years for a payback. We need long-term policy visibility on the lines of ALMM, which gives the industry and investors’ confidence.”</p>
<p>Kukreja said developers and manufacturers must build stronger supplier relationships as demand for aluminum, copper, and other materials rises across the solar, electric-vehicle, and data-center sectors.</p>
<p>She said companies should move away from transactional sourcing and identify strategic suppliers that can provide quality, resilience through market cycles, and technical expertise.</p>
<p>“All manufacturers and developers have to focus on who can be a potential strategic supplier who can actually make them grow,” Kukreja said. “The supplier should be able to provide good quality products, be resilient to market cycles, and have technical expertise.”</p>
<p>Panelists said technical requirements are changing rapidly as modules become larger, thinner, and increasingly bifacial.</p>
<p>Gupta said solar glass specifications have changed significantly over the last five to seven years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>
<p>“What has changed is thinner glasses, bigger sizes, and bifacial modules, which require the back glass to have holes and printing,” Gupta said. “Thicknesses have gone down from 3.2 mm to 2 mm, and manufacturers need to handle sizes up to 2.5 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width.”</p>
<p>However, he cautioned that module makers must carefully balance weight reduction with durability.</p>
<p>“While thinner glass makes the module lighter, a thicker glass definitely has more strength, ” Gupta said.</p>
<p>Rawat said manufacturers are also innovating in interconnects and busbars to improve module performance and reliability.</p>
<p>“We have offerings of reflective busbar, which also gives a little addition of output in the module,” he said.</p>
<p>He added that material selection is critical, especially for copper purity and alloy composition.</p>
<p>“The right selection is very critical-the alloy you are going to use, other than copper purity,” Rawat said. “You need to have a specific range of phosphorus, which plays a very critical role when you are doing soldering. This reduces oxidation, improves solderability, and improves overall solder strength.”</p>
<p>Gupta said glass manufacturing is highly energy-intensive, with gas and electricity accounting for about 40% of input costs. “That is absolutely critical “Countries like China subsidize gas or electricity. What I would want is for gas to come under GST, which could really help the industry.”</p>
<p>He also called for better hedging mechanisms for gas prices, saying Indian manufacturers have limited tools to protect themselves from international volatility.</p>
<p>“Indexes like Brent or Henry Hub are not available in the Indian market in a liquid way,” Gupta said. “It is almost impossible for individual companies like us to hedge outside the country due to RBI regulations.”</p>
<p>Rawat called for stronger enforcement of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirements for DC cables and junction boxes.</p>
<p>“Currently, junction boxes or DC cables already have BIS, although it is still not implemented,” he said. “DC cables are imported in the form of junction boxes, and it is happening freely even though BIS was announced way back in August 2023.”</p>
<p>He said BIS should apply to the junction box, including the cable, connector, and related components, since testing labs are available in India and only accreditation is pending.</p>
<p>Gupta said the solar glass industry is not seeking production-linked incentives but requires policy certainty and vigilance against duty circumvention.</p>
<p>“We are not looking at some kind of PLI scheme,” he said. “We are looking at long-term policy stability and a level playing field.”</p>
<p>He also warned that Chinese companies are moving production across countries to bypass trade barriers.</p>
<p>“Today it is Indonesia, tomorrow it might be Cambodia, next year Kenya, or somewhere else by Chinese companies,” Gupta said.</p>
<p>Panelists also highlighted risks related to access to technology and upstream chemicals. Gupta said solar glass technology has been on China’s restricted technology list for several years, and Indian companies must be careful when relying on Chinese technology suppliers. The big companies in China are not selling solar glass technology to Indian companies.”</p>
<p>The panel noted that India has made progress in localizing solar BoM and BoS manufacturing, but sustained growth will depend on long-term demand visibility, fair pricing, quality standards, component-level policy support, and a resilient domestic supply chain.</p>
<p>As India scales solar deployment, panelists said strengthening these segments can reduce import dependence, improve project economics, and help position the country as a globally competitive solar manufacturing hub.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/gujarat-issues-consultancy-solar-park" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) has invited bids for a detailed feasibility report (DFR) and detailed project report for a 500 MW solar park in Gujarat</strong></a>. The last date for submission of bids is December 25, 2023. Bids will be opened on December 31. GSECL plans to develop a 500 MW solar park at Great Rann of Harsad, Banaskantha. The specific location for the park will only be disclosed upon the finalization of the tender with the winning bidder.</p>

Bids will be opened the same day. The project will be in addition to and connected with the 2.2 MW rooftop solar project recently retendered. While there is a moderate lag in module supply for the utility-scale segment, the sector experienced a recovery in installation volume due to increased imports, the report said. <p>The company, which is a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group, expects to initially produce 25,000 tons of the foil widely used in lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells.</p>
<p>The project will be powered by a 25 MW solar power project and access additional solar energy from a 400 kV national grid connection.</p>
<p>The new facility is scheduled for commissioning in July 2025 and will supplement Hindalco’s existing battery foil manufacturing facility at Mouda in Maharashtra.</p>
<p>The Mouda facility is already in the process of qualifying with lithium-ion cell manufacturers in India, Europe, and the United States.</p>
<p>By 2030, India is expected to see the demand for battery-grade aluminum foil in India grow manifold to 40,000 tons, primarily due to the mushrooming growth in gigafactories for advanced cell manufacturing, the company said.</p>
<p>“We are seeing fast traction in battery materials demand, driven by an impressive outlook for the EV and grid storage sectors. Raw material localization is critical in such strategic sectors. Hindalco is thus making various investments in battery materials and technologies towards building Atmanirbhar Bharat. Investment in this new battery foil mill is another such step in this direction,” said Satish Pai, Managing Director at Hindalco.</p>
<p>Cell makers primarily use high-performance aluminum foils as a current collector for the cathode materials.</p>
<p>Hindalco is developing such foils to increase mechanical strength, fine-tune the thickness, and enhance the surface characteristics of these advanced application foils. It is also developing new coatings on the battery foils that will boost performance by delivering better adhesion, lower resistance, and reduced corrosion.</p>
<p>Aluminum anodes <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/aluminum-anodes-show-promise-powerful-batteries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showed</a> promise for cheaper, safer, and more powerful batteries that offer higher density and longer driving ranges for EVs, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology recently found.</p>

					</table><p><a href="https://www.ayanapower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ayana Renewable Power</a>, an India-based independent power producer, has signed a power purchase agreement with <a href="https://www.hindalco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hindalco Industries</a>, the metals flagship company of Aditya Birla Group, for the supply of 100 MW of round-the-clock (RTC) renewable power to Hindalco’s smelters in Odisha.</p>
<p>The 25-year power purchase agreement will be facilitated by 330 MW of solar-wind plus storage projects to be developed across India and connected through inter-state transmission systems.</p>
<p>Ayana will offer storage solutions in partnership with Greenko Energies’ pumped hydro storage project in Pinnapuram, Andhra Pradesh. The captive open access project is expected to have ~50% of solar and wind share.</p>
<p>Shivanand Nimbargi, MD &amp; CEO of Ayana Renewable Power, said, &#8220;At Ayana Renewable Power, we are resolutely committed to steering India&#8217;s energy transition journey. Our latest project marks a pivotal milestone as we deliver 100 MW of uninterrupted, carbon-free power round-the-clock – a pioneering feat in the industrial segment.”</p>
<p>The company claims that the RTC renewable project is the first of its kind globally to supply reliable and continuous power to the aluminum industry.</p>
<p>Aluminum smelting is a concentrated process that requires reliable and uninterrupted power. A round-the-clock power supply is expected to help Hindalco run its smelters without any dependence on grid electricity.</p>
<p>Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, at the recent company annual general meeting, had informed that Hindalco’s renewable energy integration has increased by over 54% in the financial year 2023 and currently stands at 150 MW against the company’s target of 300 MW by 2025.</p>
<p>In June 2022, Hindalco <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/hindalco-to-purchase-power-from-a-5-mw-open-access-wind-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entered</a> into an agreement to acquire a 26% stake in Cleanwin Energy SIX’s 5 MW captive open access wind project to procure wind power to help reduce energy costs.</p>
<p>Ayana recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/sprng-ntpc-ayana-o2-1-gw-hybrid-auction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> the Railway Energy Management Company’s tender to supply 300 MW of RTC power by quoting ₹4.10 (~$0.050)/kWh.</p>

Ayana to Supply 100 MW RTC Renewable Power to Hindalco’s Smelters in Odisha

					</table><p>Aditya Birla Group’s aluminum and copper flagship <a href="https://www.hindalco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hindalco Industries</a> has inked a commercial agreement with Greenko Energies, a subsidiary of the <a href="https://www.greenkogroup.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greenko Group</a>, to deploy a captive renewable energy project for the supply of 100 MW round-the-clock (RTC) carbon-free power to Hindalco’s Aditya Aluminum Smelter in Odisha.</p>
<p>The offtake arrangement will be for 25 years.</p>
<p>The two companies will collaborate to develop 375-400 MW of solar and wind power capacity, ultimately aiming mitigation of around 680,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.</p>
<p>Greenko will design, construct, partly own and operate the solar and wind facilities while extending appropriate storage capacity from its hydro pump storage project in Pinnapuram, Andhra Pradesh, to ensure continuous power supply to Hindalco’s smelter in Odisha.</p>
<p>The project is claimed to be among the first in the global aluminum sector, with operations relying on 85% solar and wind power. Hindalco is the first Indian aluminum company to implement such a carbon-free power supply arrangement round-the-clock for smelting.</p>
<p>Aluminum smelting is a concentrated process that requires reliable and uninterrupted power. A round-the-clock power supply will help Hindalco run its smelter without any dependence on grid electricity.</p>
<p>Hindalco’s Managing Director Satish Pai said, “We have made climate action integral to our business, and our expansion plans have been shaped by our ESG (environment, social, and governance) focus. The agreement with Greenko is a significant step toward reducing our carbon footprint and cementing our status as the world’s most sustainable aluminum company. We are guided by our long-term commitment to becoming net carbon-neutral by 2050.”</p>
<p>The two companies will soon sign a power purchase agreement and other supplementary agreements.</p>
<p>Greenko’s CEO and Managing Director Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty said, “At Greenko, we firmly believe that clean energy sources backed with competitive and proven storage technologies like hydro pump storage project offer a competitive, reliable, and sustainable alternative to consumers to support their decarbonization journey. For instance, in this case, the RE project, along with Greenko’s PSP, will ensure firm and predictable supply even at individual time block level without any banking support from the grid, unprecedented for RE projects globally, thereby committing very high reliability to Hindalco.”</p>
<p>Last month, Hindalco <a href="https://mercomindia.com/daily-news-wrap-up-hindalco-phinergy-aluminum-air-batteries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">inked</a> a memorandum of understanding with Phinergy, an Israeli metal-air battery technology firm, and IOC Phinergy, for pilot production of aluminum plates to be used in the aluminum-air batteries.</p>
<p>Greenko Group said it had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/daily-news-wrap-up-greenko-construction-renewable-energy-storage-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commenced</a> the construction of its 5.23 GW integrated renewable energy storage project in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district with an investment of over $3 billion.</p>

<p>The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (<a href="https://www.dgtr.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DGTR</a>) has recommended anti-dumping duty on certain flat-rolled aluminum products imported from China to offset the injury caused due to dumping in the Indian market. Flat-rolled aluminum is used in manufacturing solar module mounting structures used in ground-mounted and rooftop solar projects.</p>
<p>The investigation was conducted for the period from April 01, 2019, to March 31, 2020.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.hindalco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hindalco Industries</a> had filed an application with DGTR on behalf of the domestic industry to initiate an anti-dumping investigation on the imports of flat-rolled aluminum products from China.</p>
<p><strong>Background</strong></p>
<p>Flat-rolled products of aluminum are made in aluminum-rolled coils or aluminum-rolled sheets of various dimensions.</p>
<p>The design of the aluminum flat-rolled products differs based on the end-use requirements. Aluminum flat-rolled products belonging to different product groups will not be interchangeable for reasons like the specific alloy treatments used or the finishing.</p>
<p>The petitioner&#8217;s production share is approximately 71% of the total Indian production. The application was also supported by two domestic producers, <a href="https://jindalaluminium.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jindal Aluminium</a> and <a href="https://www.manaksiaaluminium.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Manaksia Aluminium Company</a>.</p>
<p>The domestic industry had pointed out deficiencies in the responses filed by all the exporters and importers in the investigation. Except for <a href="https://www.granges.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Granges Aluminium Shanghai</a>, none of the parties responded to these comments.</p>
<p>The domestic players, in their submission, said that the dumped imports from China had increased significantly in absolute terms during the injury period. The imports of the product under consideration had increased from 39% in the base period to 64% in the investigation period.</p>
<p>Hindalco submitted that Chinese imports had increased by 60% during the same period, but the petitioner&#8217;s sales had increased by only 2%.</p>
<p>Even after considering the decline in Chinese imports (when compared to the immediately preceding year), the imports remained substantial over the entire investigation period &#8211; about 90% of the petitioner&#8217;s domestic sales during the investigation period compared to 53% in the year 2016-17 and 73% in the year 2017-18.</p>
<p>Hindalco stated that due to the imports at low prices, it had not been able to sell its product to the domestic customers resulting in piling of the inventories at various plants.</p>
<p>The petitioner added that the Chinese producers had significantly unutilized capacities (to the tune of 8.1 million MT in the year 2020 and 8.2 million MT in the year 2021) and had enough capacities for exports to India, which have a demand of only 0.5 million MT. The capacity utilization rate of Chinese producers was close to 60%.</p>
<p>Out of the total production of aluminum products in China, about 16% (or close to 2 million MT) is meant for exports, including India.</p>
<p><strong>DGTR&#8217;s analysis</strong></p>
<p>The DGTR observed that it had already addressed arguments concerning the exclusion of &#8216;coil for tube, header plate and endplate, unclad fin stock and unclad coil&#8217; with regards to the scope of the product under consideration.</p>
<p>DGTR noted that the domestic industry had suffered a material injury during the investigation period. The examination of the imports of the subject product and the domestic industry&#8217;s performance showed that the volume of dumped imports from China had increased in both absolute and relative terms.</p>
<p>The quantity of the subject goods had increased by more than 60%, whereas demand had increased by only 18%. It also noted that the domestic industry&#8217;s market share had declined by 12% in the investigation period. In contrast, the market share of Chinese imports had increased by 35% during the period.</p>
<p>Regarding the lesser duty rule followed by the DGTR, it recommended the imposition of the anti-dumping duty to offset the injury to the domestic industry.</p>
<p>Earlier, the Ministry of Finance had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/anti-dumping-coated-flat-products/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">imposed</a> an anti-dumping duty on aluminum and zinc-coated flat products from China PR, Vietnam, and Korea RP to protect the domestic industry. The flat products are used in solar projects. Solar modules are placed on mounting structures that are made of aluminum and zinc-coated flat products.</p>
