					</table><p>China-based battery manufacturing and technology company Contemporary Amperex Technology (<a href="https://www.catl.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CATL</a>) has pledged an investment of $1.4 billion to build two lithium production plants that will utilize Direct Extraction of Lithium technology and will be located in the salt flats of Uyuni, Potosí, and Coipasa, in the city of Oruro in Bolivia.</p>
<p>The project&#8217;s initial phase aims to achieve an annual lithium production of approximately 200,000 tons.</p>
<p>CATL is considering the possibility of increasing investments to optimize production and operate more efficiently by 2025. The investment is expected to rise from $1.4 billion to $9.92 billion.</p>
<p>The announcement was made by the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energies, Franklin Molina Ortiz, who highlighted the significance of this investment in the energy sector and positioning Bolivia as a sovereign player in the lithium industry.</p>
<p>Minister Molina said, &#8220;This investment marks a milestone in the energy history of our country and consolidates Bolivia as a benchmark in the industrialization of lithium. Additionally, it is a step towards energy transition with sovereignty.&#8221;</p>
<p>In January this year, the Bolivian State, represented by Yacimientos del Litio Bolivianos (YLB), signed an agreement with CATL BRUNP &amp; CMOC (CBC) under the sovereign investment model, solidifying their partnership and paving the way for future collaboration.</p>
<p>The company said its current global market share is approximately 37%, and its clients include major electromobility players, such as Porsche, Tesla, Mercedes Benz, and Ford.</p>
<p>Recognizing the tourist potential of the Uyuni salt flats, the company plans to employ engineering strategies that minimize the project&#8217;s visual impact and prioritizes environmental conservation.</p>
<p>The engineering design would be mindful of the landscape, ensuring that it does not compromise or affect the landscape of the Uyuni salt flats, the company said in its statement.</p>
<p>In October last year, CATL <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/primergy-solar-catl-for-1-2-billion-solar-project-in-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entered</a> a sole battery supply agreement with Primergy Solar, a U.S.-based utility-scale and distributed solar and storage company, to develop a 690 MW solar and 1,416 MWh storage project called Gemini in Nevada in the United States.</p>
<p>Later in December, CATL and Gresham House Energy Storage Holdings <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/daily-news-wrap-up-gwh-battery-storage-system-to-gresham-house" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entered</a> into a long-term agreement for supplying up to 7.5 GWh of battery energy storage systems. Both parties will endeavor to increase the scope to 10 GWh of BESS for utility-scale energy storage.</p>

CATL Commits $1.4 Billion to Develop Lithium Production Plants in Bolivia

<p>The United Kingdom is the latest entrant to the International Solar Alliance (<a href="https://isolaralliance.org/Index.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ISA</a>), joining hands with India and 73 other member nations toward a common goal of sustainability.</p>
<p>The United Kingdom had confirmed its commitment to the ISA last month at the London Stock Exchange as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings. The proposed collaboration between the United Kingdom and ISA includes solar financing, developing next-generation solar technologies, and leveraging the United Kingdom’s solar business’ expertise to support the delivery of ISA objectives.</p>
<p>The ISA is an <a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-international-intergovernmental-organization/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indian initiative</a> that was jointly launched by Prime Minister Modi and former French President Hollande on November 30, 2015, in Paris, on the sidelines of COP21, the UN Climate Conference. On <a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-international-intergovernmental-organization/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">December 6, 2017</a>, ISA became a treaty-based international intergovernmental organization after Guinea ratified the organization’s framework agreement.</p>
<p>With the joining of the United Kingdom, a total of 75 countries have signed the framework agreement of the ISA. The agreement between the United Kingdom and ISA was signed during the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) consultations held between Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and Sir Simon McDonald, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, in New Delhi.</p>
<p>Speaking after the meeting, Sir Simon said, “Over the next decade, the UK and India will be ever more central players in global debates on security, development and protecting our planet. I’m delighted that, together, we are tackling these issues head-on as partners &#8211; reinforcing our two Prime Ministers’ desire to act as a joint ‘Force for Good’ in the world.”</p>
<p>In <a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-gets-new-member-bolivia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">April 2019</a>, Bolivia became the 74<sup>th</sup> member country to ratify the ISA agreement. <a href="https://mercomindia.com/argentina-saudi-arabia-agreement-isa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">In February 2019</a>, Argentina and Saudi Arabia signed the framework agreement of the ISA.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-eu-join-hands-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Recently,</a> ISA and the European Union signed a joint declaration for cooperation on solar energy. The declaration was inked at the 24th conference of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Katowice, Poland.</p>

The United Kingdom Joins International Solar Alliance

<p>Bolivia has signed the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance (<a href="https://isolaralliance.org/Index.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ISA</a>), joining hands with India towards a common goal of sustainability.</p>
<p>The ISA is an <a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-international-intergovernmental-organization/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indian initiative</a> that was jointly launched by Prime Minister Modi and former French President Hollande on November 30, 2015, in Paris, on the sidelines of COP21, the UN Climate Conference. <p>With the joining of Bolivia, a total of 74 countries have signed the framework agreement of the ISA. The agreement between Bolivia and ISA was signed during President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Bolivia. Bolivia is the second South American country after Argentina to sign the ISA framework agreement. According to a government official, another South American country Paraguay will be soon joining the ISA.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/argentina-saudi-arabia-agreement-isa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">In February 2019</a>, Argentina and Saudi Arabia signed the framework agreement of the ISA.</p>

<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-opens-membership-un-member-countries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">In November 2018</a>, the Indian government submitted a resolution to the first assembly of the <a href="http://isolaralliance.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ISA</a> for the amendments in the framework agreement to open ISA membership to all the countries that are members of the United Nations.</p>
<p>Before the resolution, the ISA mandate addressed overcoming the obstacles to deploying solar energy at scale through the improved harmonization and aggregation of demand from solar-rich countries located fully or partially between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-conference-india-pledges-1-4-billion-solar-projects-developing-countries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Earlier</a>, at the <a href="https://mercomindia.com/isa-international-intergovernmental-organization/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">inaugural</a> conference of the ISA held in New Delhi, the Government of India pledged $1.4 billion to fund the development of solar projects in 15 African and South Asian countries that are part of the ISA consortium.</p>
