					</table><p>For much of the past decade, innovation focused on improving cell chemistry and lowering manufacturing costs. Today, the industry&#8217;s focus is shifting from cell-level performance to system-level optimization.</p>
<p>The move toward higher-capacity battery cells is driving this transition. Following the widespread adoption of 280Ah and 314Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, manufacturers are introducing 587Ah, 600Ah+, and even 1,000Ah+ cell platforms. These larger-format cells promise higher energy density and lower balance-of-system (BoS) costs. But they also come with new operational and safety challenges.</p>
<p><strong>The Drive Toward Higher-Capacity Cells</strong></p>
<p>Higher-capacity cells reduce the total number of cells required to achieve a given system energy rating. Fewer cells translate into fewer electrical connections, simplified rack structures, lower manpower requirements, and potentially smaller systems.</p>
<p>A leading cell manufacturer said higher-capacity cells allow developers to store more energy within the same physical footprint. Shifting from lower-capacity cells to higher-capacity cells translates to more energy in the same container. As a result, the overall system cost, including container and battery costs on a per-kilowatt-hour basis, comes down.</p>
<p>“The trend is particularly relevant as utilities and independent power producers increasingly seek four-hour-and-longer storage systems. The reduction in system costs will improve the competitiveness of storage projects and help developers win bids in an increasingly price-sensitive market,” the manufacturer said.</p>
<p>The adoption of larger cells is also expected to reduce BoS costs. Higher-energy containers require fewer cables, foundations, and interconnections, reducing installation complexity and overall plant-level expenditure.</p>
<p>He pointed out that while the industry is focused on maximizing megawatt-hours per container, equal attention must be given to system performance, cooling strategies, and long-term reliability.</p>
<p>According to Ankit Saini, Technical Support at <a href="https://invergypowersupply.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iNVERGY</a>, battery storage systems are designed according to the required power and energy demand. When demand is higher, the system must be designed with sufficient storage capacity. Higher-capacity cells help achieve that capacity with fewer units.</p>
<p>For utility-scale projects, these advantages can significantly reduce BoS costs, which often represent a substantial portion of total project expenditure.</p>
<p>“The main benefit of higher-capacity cells is that more storage can be accommodated within a battery bank. Compared with lower-capacity cells, higher-capacity cells allow the system to store more energy in the same configuration or reduce the number of required units,” added Saini.</p>
<p>According to another battery cell manufacturer, as cell capacity increases, factors such as thermal management, fault propagation control, replacement strategies, rack design, cooling architecture, and system safety become increasingly important in large-scale storage deployments. “Commercial adoption is now driven less by cell capacity alone and more by lower levelized cost of storage, higher system availability, and predictable long-term lifecycle performance,” the manufacturer said.</p>
<p>Industry insiders say proven configurations are likely to remain relevant where reliability, maintainability, and project-financing requirements outweigh the benefits of higher energy density. Ultimately, adoption of higher-capacity cells will depend on achieving the right balance between energy density, operational safety, maintainability, and lifecycle economics.</p>
<p><strong>Thermal Management</strong></p>
<p>As energy density increases, thermal management becomes significantly more critical. As more energy is stored in the system, safety, thermal runaway risk, and heat dissipation become much more important.</p>
<p>Effective thermal control is becoming critical as cell sizes grow. Maintaining uniform temperature distribution across large battery arrays directly affects performance, efficiency, degradation rates, and operational safety.</p>
<p>“Thermal management is important. As cell capacity increases, heating and temperature control become key factors. For this, systems use air cooling or liquid cooling,” Saini added. “Advanced liquid-cooling systems are increasingly replacing traditional air-cooling systems because they provide better temperature control and improve system reliability over long operational lifetimes,” he added.</p>
<p>Preventing a single-cell failure from spreading to adjacent cells or racks has become a primary design objective.</p>
<p>According to Saini, while increasing cell capacity is beneficial, system stability is equally important and can be managed through proper design and temperature control. Maintaining the right temperature is critical.</p>
<p>One of the most significant challenges associated with larger-format cells is maintainability. A failed high-capacity cell can have a greater impact on system availability than a failure in a smaller-cell architecture.</p>
<p><strong>Lifecycle Economics Matter More </strong></p>
<p>Earlier, battery technology comparisons focused on metrics such as energy density and upfront cost. Today, investors and project developers increasingly evaluate systems using Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) or Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS).</p>
<p>These metrics incorporate factors including initial capital expenditure, operating and maintenance costs, round-trip efficiency, capacity degradation, system availability, replacement costs, and expected operational lifetime</p>
<p>A battery system with higher energy density does not necessarily achieve the lowest lifecycle cost if it experiences higher maintenance requirements, lower availability, or increased safety-related operating expenses.</p>
<p>“Commercial success is increasingly linked to predictable long-term performance rather than simply maximizing cell capacity,” Saini noted. “Despite industry enthusiasm for larger cells, established configurations such as 314Ah platforms continue to offer significant advantages. For many utility-scale projects, particularly those supported by project financing, reliability and bankability remain critical factors in decision-making.”</p>
<p><strong>The Path Forward</strong></p>
<p>The future of battery energy storage will not be determined solely by high-capacity battery cells. Instead, experts believe the real challenge is successfully integrating higher-capacity cells into systems that deliver superior safety, reliability, maintainability, and economic performance.</p>
<p>As battery storage becomes a critical asset in supporting power grids, stakeholders are increasingly evaluating complete system performance rather than individual component specifications.</p>
<p>Looking ahead, experts expect battery container capacities to continue increasing. Current systems are moving from approximately 5 MWh containers to 6.5-6.8 MWh configurations, with 8 MWh containers potentially becoming commercially viable within the next few years.</p>
<p>Advances in cell capacity alone will not drive this growth. System architecture will also play a key role. Future developments could include a transition from today&#8217;s 1,500-volt DC architectures to 2,000-volt DC systems, enabling higher energy densities and further optimization of storage installations.</p>
<p>Successful technology adoption will depend on striking the right balance among energy density, operational safety, lifecycle economics, and long-term system reliability, thereby enabling the transition to the next phase of the country&#8217;s battery storage evolution.</p>

<p>China-based RJE Tech will supply 314 Ah storage-specific prismatic LFP battery cells.</p>
<p>Pace Digitek said the cells are designed for a longer lifecycle and higher safety.</p>
<p>The company said the agreement strengthens its battery cell sourcing framework and supports battery energy storage system manufacturing platform for utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) applications.</p>
<p>The agreement establishes long-term commercial terms covering pricing, quality standards, warranties, and delivery timelines. It also provides a framework for technical collaboration, product validation, quality assurance, and continuous product improvement.</p>
<p>Pace Digitek said RJE Tech&#8217;s manufacturing base in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is expected to support shipments to India and other international destinations.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Lineage Power <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/lineage-power-bags-%E2%82%B91-58-billion-battery-pack-order-from-reliance-industries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> an order worth ₹1.58 billion (~$17.39 million) from Reliance Industries for the supply of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs.</p>
<p>The order involved the supply of Li-ion battery packs with a technical configuration of 48V, 15S1P, and a capacity of 314 AH. The battery packs specified under the contract have a nominal voltage of 48 volts and are configured in a 15S1P arrangement, indicating 15 cells connected in series and one cell in parallel, delivering a total capacity of 314 ampere-hours.</p>
<p>In the same month, Pace Digitek <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/pace-digitek-bags-epc-contract-for-bondadas-300-mw-solar-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> Karnataka Renewable Energy Development’s auction to set up a 250 MW solar project with a 250 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system at Ryapte village in Tumkur district.</p>
<p>In January this year, Pace Digitek <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/pace-digitek-bags-epc-contract-for-bondadas-300-mw-solar-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> an engineering, procurement, and construction order valued at ₹3.76 billion (~$45.3 million) from Bondada Engineering to provide balance-of-system works for its 300 MW solar project.</p>
<p>In the same month, Lineage Power <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/pace-digiteks-subsidiary-secures-%E2%82%B9943-million-bess-order-from-bsnl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> a purchase order valued at ₹943.51 million (~$10.46 million) to supply battery modules, racks, and associated accessories to Bharat Sanchar Nigam.</p>


Lineage Power to Procure 3 GWh Lithium Iron Phosphate Cells from RJE Tech

					</table><p>Bengaluru-based battery cell manufacturer, <a href="https://e-trnl.energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">e-TRNL Energy,</a> has secured ₹274 million (~$3.02 million) in seed funding, led by <a href="https://iangroup.vc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IAN Group</a>’s IAN Alpha Fund with participation from <a href="https://www.navamcapital.com/team" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Navam Capital</a>, <a href="https://www.specialeinvest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Speciale Invest</a>, and other investors.</p>
<p>This capital injection will be used to complete product development, validate performance and safety, and demonstrate domestic manufacturing capabilities for its next-generation battery cells.</p>
<p>With this funding, e-TRNL Energy plans to establish a 250 MWh pilot manufacturing facility by 2027, with a roadmap to expand to 2 GWh capacity in future phases.</p>
<p>The company has spent the past few years developing a fundamentally different battery cell architecture and manufacturing process that aims for safer operation (less heat), faster charging, longer life, and higher energy density compared with conventional designs.</p>
<p>e-TRNL Energy operates a 20,000-square-foot R&amp;D and early manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, and is preparing to move toward scalable commercialization. It has been granted two patents for its battery cell design and has filed additional patent applications.</p>
<p>According to Apoorv Shaligram, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at e-TRNL Energy, the company will move towards demonstration, testing, and scaling its innovation for commercialization with the funding.</p>
<p>Its first commercial product will be based on Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, with plans to develop additional formats such as LMFP and sodium-ion batteries over time.</p>
<p>The company aims to supply cells to battery pack manufacturers serving the rapidly growing electric mobility and battery storage markets.</p>
<p>Battery storage is fast becoming an integral part of India’s clean energy drive. As of June 2025, the cumulative installed battery storage capacity stood at 490 MWh, with solar-plus-storage projects accounting for the majority of deployments. Nearly 74.8 GWh of storage-linked capacity is under various stages of the tendering process, according to the ‘Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) and Bidding Trends in Indian Energy Storage Projects’ report released by <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/research" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom India Research</a>.</p>


e-TRNL Energy Secures ₹274 Million to Scale Next Generation Battery Cell Innovation

					</table><p>The U.S. Department of Energy (<a href="https://www.energy.gov/nnsa/national-nuclear-security-administration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DOE</a>) announced the closing of a $2.5 billion loan to <a href="https://www.ultiumcell.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ultium Cells</a>, a joint venture between General Motors (<a href="https://www.gm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GM</a>) and <a href="https://www.lgensol.com/en/index" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LG Energy Solutions</a>, to construct three new lithium-ion battery manufacturing units in Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan.</p>
<p>The battery cells will meet the requirements of electric vehicles (EVs) amidst a growing demand in the country.</p>
<p>The funding will directly support the goal of having EVs cover over half of all new vehicle sales by 2030 while bolstering net zero targets by 2050.</p>
<p>It is the first loan closed by the Loan Programs Office (LPO) – an affiliate of DOE &#8212;  which is exclusively for a battery cell manufacturing project under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program</p>
<p>In July this year, LPO issued a conditional commitment for the loan to Ultium Cells to produce large format, pouch-type cells that use uncommon chemistry to fetch more range at a lower price. These cells can be arranged in various combinations to provide clean and reliable energy for all vehicles running on the road currently.</p>
<p>Ultium Cells aims to use the expertise of GM to mitigate 100% of tailpipe emissions from its new U.S. light-duty vehicles by 2035. GM will also use loans to upgrade its capacity to produce over a million EVs annually in North America by 2040 while making all its products carbon-free.</p>
<p>The project is expected to create over 11,000 jobs, including 6,000 construction jobs and 5,100 jobs in operations across the three facilities and over 700 United Auto Worker jobs in the newly organized Warren, Ohio facility.</p>
<p>U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “This loan will jumpstart the domestic battery cell production needed to reduce our reliance on other countries to meet increased demand and support President Biden’s goals of widespread EV adoption and cutting carbon pollution produced by gas-powered vehicles.”</p>
<p>The loan closing comes after the launch of the American Battery Materials initiative by President Biden in October this year. To help build out the battery mineral and material supply chain in the U.S., the President also declared $2.8 billion in grants from DOE.</p>
<p>Until October, the DOE said it had received 98 applications for projects across America totaling more than $104 billion in requested loans and loan guarantees.</p>
<p>The Inflation Reduction Act <a href="https://mercomindia.com/inflation-reduction-act-a-gamechanger-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> in August makes additional investments in ATVM by appropriating $3 billion for the costs of direct loans, which will be available through September 2028.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, the DOE <a href="https://mercomindia.com/us-seeks-public-weigh-in-for-lithium-ion-battery-recycling-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> a Request for Information to help guide the implementation of $335 million investments from the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for lithium-ion battery recycling programs.</p>


US Loans $2.5 Billion to Ultium Cells for Lithium-ion Battery Manufacturing

					</table><p>Europe is expected to achieve a battery cell production capacity of 124 GWh during 2022, with significant Asian cell producers expanding operations in the region and extensive investments in many newly established European cell gigafactories.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.isi.fraunhofer.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research</a> (ISI) has forecast battery cell production will quadruple to over 500 GWh in the next three years and up to 1.5 TWh by 2030.</p>
<p>The latest numbers reveal that Europe will likely accommodate around a quarter of global battery cell production capacities by the end of the decade, with current announcements for the construction of battery cell factories covering at least 15 European nations.</p>
<p>Fraunhofer ISI predicts that until the end of the current decade, new cell-producing factories in Germany will contribute the largest share of 400 GWh battery cell production in Europe. The current global automotive sector is focused on battery-electric drives as it helps mitigate large amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Even sustainable power storage solutions are based on battery cells.</p>
<p>Such a rise in demand for batteries calls for a rapid build-up of manufacturing facilities with capacities that would meet the needs of diverse sectors. Fraunhofer ISI&#8217;s researcher Lukas Weymann said, &#8220;The rapid development in Europe&#8217;s battery cell production is largely driven by European players such as <a href="https://northvolt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northvolt</a>, Volkswagen (<a href="https://www.vw.com/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">VW</a>), and Automotive Cells Company (<a href="https://www.acc-emotion.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ACC</a>). The three mentioned have jointly announced about a third of Europe&#8217;s cell production capacities.&#8221;</p>
<p>Northvolt has aggressively implemented its expansion <a href="https://mercomindia.com/northvolt-raises-2-75-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strategies</a> across the region with a target to achieve a maximum battery cell production capacity of 40 GWh from five factories once the construction is completed.</p>
<p>Overall, more than 40 cell producers have announced the establishment of battery factories in Europe, including non-European cell makers such as China&#8217;s CATL and Tesla with their planned German cell factories. With their Eastern European factories, South Korea-based cell producers LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI will also establish a large share of European cell production.</p>
<p>Germany, France, and Italy are set to get battery cell facilities with the ACC&#8217;s announcement on the construction of gigafactories in the three countries. ACC benefits from the support provided by the Important Project of Common European Interest (<a href="https://www.ipcei-me.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IPCEI</a>) launched by the <a href="https://european-union.europa.eu/index_en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Union</a>. The car manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis, and French battery producer Saft, are shareholders in ACC and would also share the investments in establishing the cell production factories.</p>
<p>India has also witnessed a drastic rise in demand for batteries with increased sales of electric vehicles. According to a joint report <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-annual-battery-market-could-surpass/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> by NITI Aayog and the Rocky Mountain Institute, the country&#8217;s annual battery market is likely to surpass $15 billion (~₹1.12 trillion) by 2030, pushing the battery demand to 260 GWh in an &#8216;accelerated scenario&#8217;.</p>


Europe’s Battery Cell Production Capacity to Increase to 1.5 TWh by 2030

<p><a href="https://solidpowerbattery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Solid Power</a>, an all-solid-state rechargeable battery cells manufacturer, reported a revenue of $2.2 million in the first quarter (Q1) 2022, a 358% year-over-year (YoY) increase compared to $480,000 in Q1 2021.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s net loss increased to $10.3 million in Q1 2022, up 43% YoY from $7.2 million during the same period last year.</p>
<p>The company attributed the net loss to the increase in operating expenses driven by planned investments in product development and the scaling of operations.</p>
<p>Solid Power manufacturers all-solid-state rechargeable battery cells for electric vehicles and mobile power markets. It replaces the flammable liquid electrolyte in a conventional lithium-ion battery with a proprietary sulfide-based solid electrolyte. Solid Power&#8217;s all-solid-state battery cells are claimed to be safer and more stable across a broad temperature range, increased energy density compared to the other available rechargeable battery cells, and are compatible with traditional lithium-ion manufacturing processes.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s pilot line is expected to begin producing EV-scale cells for internal testing during the third quarter.</p>
<p>Commenting on the financial results, Doug Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of Solid Power, said, &#8220;During the first quarter, we made meaningful progress towards delivering on the accelerated investment timeline we shared previously. We are now nearing completion of our EV cell pilot line, while other investments in our operating and development capabilities remain on track. We believe these ongoing investments are key to ensuring we meet the initial stages of automotive qualification while delivering long-term value.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last May, Solid Power <a href="https://mercomindia.com/funding-and-ma-roundup-solid-power/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised</a> $130 million in a Series B investment round led by the BMW Group, Ford Motor Company, and Volta Energy Technologies. Ford and the BMW Group had also expanded existing joint development agreements with Solid Power to secure all-solid-state batteries for future electric vehicles.</p>
<p>When asked about building partnerships with Ford and BMW during the quarterly earnings call, Campbell confirmed that the company is in talks with them.</p>
<p>Previously, Solid Power and Decarbonization Plus Acquisition Corporation III (DCRC), a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), <a href="https://mercomindia.com/battery-company-solid-power-to-go-public/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a $1.2 billion worth definitive agreement for a business combination, resulting in Solid Power becoming a publicly listed company.</p>
