The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has launched the qualification process for the second group of four-hour-duration battery energy storage projects, with a total capacity of 3,000 MW/12,000 MWh.
Each project will be set up under a build-own-operate model, with selected bidders holding 100% equity in the special purpose vehicle established to develop and operate the storage project.
The tender is for the following independent storage provider projects of 500 MW each:
- Samha BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the Qassim region
- Al-Leeth BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the Makkah region
- Al-Henakiyah BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the Madinah region
- Khulis BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the Makkah region
- Sadawi BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the country’s eastern region
- Ashyrah BESS ISP: 500 MW/2,000 MWh in the Makkah region
SPPC has also opened qualifications for solar, wind, and future energy storage projects.
Last January, Saudi Arabia announced the pre-qualification of bidders for its 2,000 MW/8,000 MWh battery energy storage systems tender as part of its renewable energy expansion strategy.
Earlier this year, Nextpower Arabia, a joint venture between Nextpower and Abunayyan Holding, announced it would supply 2.25 GWp of advanced solar tracking systems to Larsen & Toubro for the Bisha Solar project. This project was procured by SPPC as part of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) Wave 6 initiative.
In October 2025, SPPC awarded four solar and one wind projects totaling 4.5 GW in the sixth phase of NREP.
In September, SPPC released tender documents for the seventh round of NREP. This round invited bids for 3.1 GW of solar and 2.2 GW of wind energy projects.
In the same year, SPCC selected a consortium of developers comprising Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), KEPCO, and GD Power Development Company in November to commission the 2 GW Al Sadawi Solar Project in Saudi Arabia.
