Data center company Nxtra Data, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, will procure power from a 13.2 MW solar project in captive mode from AMPIN Energy C&I Sixteen, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of AMPIN C&I.
The project will be developed in Dighol-Islamnpur district, Maharashtra.
AMPIN C&I is a joint venture between independent power producer AMPIN Energy Transition and Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation.
Nxtra has entered into an agreement with the SPV to acquire a 35% equity stake for an aggregate value of ₹51.92 million (~$586,788).
The SPV was formed to develop, construct, operate, and maintain the solar project, which will be connected to a 132 kV substation and supply power to Nxtra Data through an intrastate network.
Incorporated on March 18, 2023, AMPIN Energy C&I Sixteen will become operational in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2026.
In a regulatory filing, Bharti Airtel said the transaction will be subject to grid connectivity and open access approvals.
Nxtra’s portfolio includes 15 hyperscale data centers. It claims to use over 390 MW of renewable energy for its operations.
In July this year, Nxtra signed a new power wheeling agreement with AMPIN Energy Transition for the supply of 125.65 MW of solar-wind hybrid energy through interstate transmission system-connected projects. The deal would bring the total contracted green energy capacity between the two companies to over 200 MW.
Nxtra utilizes renewable energy to meet 41% of its data center energy needs and is undertaking other sustainability initiatives, such as building zero-discharge data centers and deploying fuel cell technology.
Last August, Nxtra reported that 38.3% of the total electricity consumed in its core data centers was sourced from renewable energy sources during the financial year 2023-24. The use of renewable energy increased by 41% from the previous year, according to the company’s environmental, social, and governance report.
