In line with the trend of Indian businesses switching to clean energy sources, healthcare company KMC Speciality Hospitals will procure solar power from a renewable energy project of Gardenia Energy.
The hospital chain, with facilities in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru, has acquired a 26% equity stake in Gardenia Energy to qualify as a captive consumer of solar power for its Maa Kauvery Hospital unit.
The investment involves the purchase of 2,600 equity shares at ₹10 (~$0.12) each, amounting to ₹26,000 (~$312.31), and has been structured as a restrictive investment with no control over Gardenia Energy. The company clarified that the target entity was not a related party and no regulatory approvals were required for the transaction.
Gardenia Energy operates in the renewable energy sector and is engaged in supplying renewable energy.
KMC Hospitals has steadily advanced its renewable energy strategy, enabling it to source a major portion of its power from clean energy sources. Renewable energy sources contributed around 78% of its total energy mix in the financial year 2024-25.
The consumption of renewable energy during the year amounted to 7.10 million megajoules, resulting in cost savings of over ₹8.05 million (~$96,703.59). The hospital chain has set a target of achieving 100% renewable energy consumption by the end of the next financial year.
Mercom reported that Narayana Health, a multi-specialty hospital, heart center, and primary care facility chain with a presence across 18 cities in India, had saved over ₹40 million (~$482,946) in 2021 by adopting renewable energy to power most of its operations.
To assist businesses in the commercial and industrial segment to switch to renewable energy, Mercom has been hosting C&I Clean Energy Meets across various cities. These events are designed to provide C&I energy buyers with the knowledge and tools they need to adopt clean energy solutions and lower their power costs. The next event in the series will be held in Jaipur on September 129, 2025.
