Seven companies won Japan’s 29^th solar power auction for projects of at least 250 kW, securing 38.2 MW out of the original auctioned capacity of 115 MW under the feed-in premium (FIP) program.

The winning bidders were as follows:

A total of eight bids were successful in the auction, with one of the seven companies, Sandia, securing two projects. The successful bids represented the entire 38.2 MW capacity submitted during the bidding process, according to the Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators (OCCTO).

The lowest tariff quoted was ¥5.30 (~$0.033)/kWh, while the highest was ¥9.48 (~$0.06)/kWh. The weighted-average successful bid was ¥8.89 (~$0.056)/kWh.

OCCTO had set a ceiling price of ¥9.6 (~$0.06)/kWh for the auction.

AC12 secured the highest capacity at 29.9 MW, followed by Sandia at 2.5 MW, Japan Petroleum Exploration, and Solar Field 13 at 1.99 MW.

The auction received 13 business plans representing a cumulative capacity of 87.7 MW for eligibility screening. Of these, 12 applicants with projects totaling 87.3 MW were notified as eligible to participate.

Eight bids totaling 38.2 MW were eventually submitted. The weighted-average bid price was ¥8.89 (~$0.056)/kWh.

The auction, the second conducted in fiscal year 2026, was open to FIP-based solar power projects with a capacity of at least 250 kW.

Japan selected 29 bids for a total capacity of 89.2 MW to install 91 MW of solar projects under its 28^th solar auction.

In the 27^th auction, the country awarded 79 MW of solar capacity, with a weighted-average winning price of ¥4.61 (~$0.029)/kWh.

In Japan’s 26^th solar auction, 16 companies secured 75.4 MW of projects from an original auctioned capacity of 163 MW. The auction was also open to solar projects of at least 250 kW under the FIP program.

In 2025, a record 664 GW of new solar capacity was installed globally, taking the total operating capacity worldwide to about 2.9 TW, according to SolarPower Europe’s Global Solar Market Outlook 2026-2030. Japan added 5.8 GW of solar capacity during the year.
