India’s solar cell manufacturing faces the test of quality at scale

The share of open access charges in landed solar power costs declined across most major states in the second quarter of 2026, following the revision of charges for the financial year 2027, according to Mercom’s Q2 and 1H 2026 India Solar Open Access Market Report.

India’s rapidly expanding solar cell manufacturing industry faces a challenge beyond adding production capacity: achieving consistent efficiency, yields, reliability, and quality at scale. Adding gigawatts of nameplate capacity does not automatically translate into cells that match the performance and consistency of those produced by more mature global manufacturing ecosystems, particularly China.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries amended the Phased Manufacturing Program for N2 and N3 category electric trucks under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement program, increasing domestic manufacturing requirements for key drivetrain components. The amendments cover traction motors, traction motors integrated with transmissions, and traction motor controllers, including inverters.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy invited pitches on concentrating solar thermal technology solutions for various heating applications in industries under its Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development Program.

Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation invited bids to appoint a project management consultant for an automatic generation control-enabled 5 MW/2.5 MWh battery energy storage system pilot project in Vadodara, Gujarat. The last date to submit bids is September 28, 2026. Bids will be opened on the same day.

Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments issued a tender to install 15 MW of grid-connected rooftop solar projects on government buildings across states and union territories under the renewable energy service company model. Bids must be submitted by September 29, 2026. Bids will be opened the next day.

Clean technology company KIS Group and Paras Dairy announced that they would set up 10 BioCNG plants with an estimated investment of ₹10 billion (~$105.14 million). The plants will be developed in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states, and are expected to be operationalized by 2029.
