Kolkata-based solar cell and module manufacturer Websol Energy System has commissioned a 600 MW monocrystalline passivated emitter and rear cell (Mono PERC) manufacturing line at Falta, West Bengal.
The company’s solar cell manufacturing capacity has now doubled to 1.2 GW.
It also has a 550 MW solar module line at the same facility in the Falta Special Economic Zone.
Websol said it had to temporarily shut down its existing cell and module manufacturing lines for approximately eight days due to certain commissioning-related activities. This shutdown has had a one-time impact on the company’s revenue during the second quarter of the financial year 2026.
Operations have since resumed as planned.
The company manufactures M10 and G12 bi-facial Mono PERC solar cells. It claims these cells achieve over 23% conversion efficiency.
Recently, Websol announced an expansion plan to add 4 GW of solar cell and 4 GW of solar module capacity. The expansion will be carried out in two phases, utilizing tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) technology. Phase III will add 2 GW of solar cell and 2 GW of solar module capacity by June 2027. Phase IV will add another 2 GW of solar cell and 2 GW of solar module capacity by June 2028.
India added 25.3 GW of solar module capacity and 11.6 GW of solar cell capacity in 2024, according to Mercom’s State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 2025 report.
The manufacturing capacity additions in 2024 were primarily driven by demand from the solar project pipeline and the reimposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers order from April 2024.
Based on the current pipeline, monocrystalline modules are anticipated to account for over 58% of the annual module production capacity and 64% of the cell production capacity by 2027, followed by TOPCon, Heterojunction, and other technologies.
