					</table><p>Larsen &amp; Toubro (<a href="https://www.larsentoubro.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">L&amp;T</a>), in partnership with Hitachi Energy, has been nominated by transmission system operator TenneT to deliver high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for offshore wind projects across the German and Dutch sectors of the North Sea.</p>
<p>L&amp;T&#8217;s power transmission and distribution vertical also won a batch of grid infrastructure orders in Saudi Arabia as part of the country’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).</p>
<p>The first order concerns the construction of a 380/33 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS). The scope also involves related hybrid GIS elements, 380 kV transformers and reactors, and subsystems for power system protection, control, automation, telecommunication, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and firefighting.</p>
<p>The second set of orders concerns the construction of 380 kV overhead transmission links with an aggregated route length exceeding 420 kilometers.</p>
<p>Saudi Arabia is upgrading its electricity grid to support a surge in renewable energy projects.</p>
<p>L&amp;T <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/mena-round-up-lt-lowest-bidder-for-kuwait-solar-projects-transmission-line/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">submitted</a> the lowest bid of KWD1.45 million (~$135.19 million) to set up the 400 kV overhead transmission line project connecting the Al Shaqaya Solar Power Station to the Al Wafra (Z) substation in Kuwait.</p>
<p>In August, L&amp;T Renewables <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/lt-bags-epc-contract-for-116-mw-241-mwh-solar-plus-battery-storage-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> the auction conducted by Bihar State Power Generation Company for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 116 MW solar power project integrated with a 241 MWh battery energy storage system in Lakhisarai district, Bihar.</p>
<p>In February, L&amp;T&#8217;s renewables business <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/mena-roundup-larsen-toubro-wins-epc-contract-for-masdars-bess-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won </a>Masdar&#8217;s engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the north site, a 24/7 solar and battery storage giga-scale project in Abu Dhabi.</p>
<p>Developed by Masdar in collaboration with EWEC, the project will feature 5.2 GW solar capacity and a 19 GWh battery energy storage system, making it the largest globally. The north and south sites will have capacities of 2.6 GWh and 9.5 GWh, enabling a round-the-clock clean energy supply.</p>
<p>In June last year, Larsen &amp; Toubro <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/lt-wins-185-mw-solar-project-bess-in-bihar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> an order to build a grid-connected 185 MW solar power project with a 254 MWh battery energy storage system in Lakshisarai district from the Bihar State Power Generation Company.</p>


L&T To Supply HVDC Converter Stations for TenneT’s North Sea Wind Projects

					</table><p>Netherlands-based transmission system operator <a href="https://www.tennet.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TenneT</a> has awarded contracts worth around €30 billion (~$33 billion) to four partners to develop and deliver 14 offshore grid connection systems.</p>
<p>The systems will link offshore wind farms in the German and Dutch sectors of the North Sea to high-voltage grids on land and are expected to be completed by 2031.</p>
<p>The four partnerships are with Siemens Energy/Dragados consortium, GE/McDermott, Hitachi Energy/Petrofac, and GE/Sembcorp Marine.</p>
<p>Eight of the 14 offshore grid connection systems will be developed in the Netherlands and six in Germany.</p>
<p>The core components of these systems will be sea and land-based converter stations that can convert alternating current into direct current and back. This allows for the efficient transmission of large amounts of electricity over long distances with minimal losses. The core components will be manufactured exclusively at the European production sites of the consortia&#8217;s members.</p>
<p>The systems will have a total capacity of 28 GW, equivalent to the electricity output of 28 large-scale power plants. They will connect multiple offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 40 GW, about two-thirds of the total offshore wind capacity planned by Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands by 2030.</p>
<p>The four countries signed the Esbjerg Declaration at the North Sea Energy Summit in May 2022, agreeing to jointly install at least 65 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. The ambitious plan requires Europe&#8217;s green powerhouse, the North Sea, to be developed and quickly connected to the electricity grids on land.</p>
<p>TenneT&#8217;s investment of €30 billion and its 2 GW Program is expected to help make green wind energy from the North Sea scalable and more cost-efficient – while continuing to minimize any impacts on the environment.</p>
<p>TenneT&#8217;s Chief Operating Officer, Tim Meyerjürgens, stated that the company has the necessary know-how to make Europe&#8217;s goal of securing an independent supply of renewable energies a reality.</p>
<p>TenneT&#8217;s plan to expand its offshore transmission capacity to 25 GW in Germany and 11.5 GW in the Netherlands by 2030 significantly contributes to achieving the European Union&#8217;s target of increasing the share of renewable energy sources in its final energy consumption by at least 32% by 2030.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, Germany&#8217;s Federal Network Agency <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/germany-invites-bids-offshore-wind" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> a new offshore wind auction to install 1.8 GW of offshore wind power projects in the North Sea, with an expected grid connection date of 2028.</p>
<p>The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency <a href="https://mercomindia.com/germany-earmarks-expand-wind-to-30-gw-by-2030/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> the area development plan 2023 aimed at helping Germany achieve its target of expanding offshore wind energy to 30 GW by 2030. The plan included mappings for deploying wind turbines in the North and Baltic Seas, where the country sees immense potential for offshore wind.</p>


TenneT Signs $33 Billion Contracts for Offshore Wind Grid Development

					</table><p>Transmission system operator <a href="https://www.tennet.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TenneT</a> has awarded a multi-year framework agreement to <a href="https://www.petrofac.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Petrofac</a> and <a href="https://www.hitachienergy.com/in/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hitachi Energy</a> to supply offshore platforms and onshore converter stations for its 2 GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore wind program the Netherlands and Germany.</p>
<p>The program aims to integrate bulk renewables into European power grids. Petrofac and Hitachi will execute all six projects valued at over €2 billion (~$2.2 billion) each, which would be split equally between them.</p>
<p>Each project comprises the EPCI of an offshore HVDC transmission station, onshore converter station and associated infrastructure.</p>
<p>Each connection system will have a capacity of 2 GW and a voltage level of 525 kV. The five connection systems will connect offshore wind farms to the Dutch grid, while the sixth system will connect to the German grid.</p>
<p>The first contract for the Ijmuiden Ver Alpha project was awarded immediately. The second contract, Nederwiek 1, is anticipated to be awarded later this year. The other four projects– Doordewind 1, Doordewind 2, Nederwiek 3, and LanWin5- are expected to be awarded between 2024 and 2026.</p>
<p>Petrofac will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the offshore platforms and elements of the onshore converter stations.</p>
<p>Hitachi Energy will supply its HVDC converter stations, which convert AC power to DC offshore and DC to AC onshore.</p>
<p>“We have already secured key resources and the yard capacity required to expedite the first two projects in TenneT’s ground-breaking program. By combining Petrofac’s industry-leading EPCI expertise and Hitachi Energy’s well-proven technology, we look forward to supporting TenneT to connect larger, more effective wind farms to deliver affordable clean energy for millions of European homes,” said Sami Iskander, Petrofac’s Group Chief Executive.</p>
