					</table><a href="https://ntpc.co.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NTPC</a> has invited bids for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 200 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The project will comprise a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS at its Mouda Super Thermal Power Station Stage I and another 100 MW/200 MWh system at Stage II. The systems will connect to the thermal power station at 132 kV.
The BESS will have a two-hour storage duration and must be capable of two operating cycles with a two-hour duration per cycle.
The last date to submit bids is October 22, 2026. Bids will be opened on the same day.
Bidders must furnish a bid security of ₹100 million (~$1.05 million).
The scope of work includes the battery system, battery management system, energy management system, supervisory control and data acquisition system, power conversion system, protection and communication systems, high-tension and low-tension systems, auxiliary power system, and fire detection and protection system.
The contractor must also provide remote control and monitoring systems and associated equipment and accessories required for the operation and maintenance of the BESS. The scope includes interconnecting the storage systems with the existing thermal power plant facilities.
The BESS will be capable of charging from un-requisitioned surplus power from the thermal generating units as well as tied-up renewable energy. The system must support functions including peak power supply, frequency regulation, ramping support, and reactive power management.
Bidders can deploy any proven, maintenance-free battery technology suitable for the site&#8217;s climatic conditions and meeting the technical specifications.
The battery and associated systems are envisaged to have warranties covering the complete 12-year project life.
The successful bidder must provide a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for 11 years following successful completion of the performance guarantee test.
The BESS must maintain a round-trip efficiency of at least 80% and cumulative annual availability of at least 95%. Annual capacity degradation must not exceed 2.5%.
Before the performance guarantee test begins, the contractor must demonstrate the rated power output and energy storage capacity at the point of interconnection, along with frequency response, ramping capability, and reactive power capability.
The performance guarantee test will run for one year. At the end of the first year, NTPC will evaluate annual capacity degradation, round-trip efficiency, and cumulative annual availability.
During the comprehensive annual maintenance period, the round-trip efficiency benchmark will be the efficiency measured during the performance guarantee test or 80%, whichever is lower. Annual capacity degradation must remain within 2.5%, while cumulative annual availability must remain at or above 95%.
Battery manufacturers can qualify if they have manufactured and supplied batteries with a cumulative capacity of at least 20 MWh for grid-interactive BESS projects. At least one reference BESS of 5 MWh or more must have been supplied under a single order and successfully commissioned at least six months before the techno-commercial bid opening.
Alternatively, bidders must have supplied, installed or supervised the installation, and commissioned or supervised the commissioning of grid-interactive BESS projects with a cumulative installed capacity of at least 20 MWh. At least one reference BESS of 5 MWh or more supplied under a single order must have been successfully commissioned for at least six months.
Companies can also qualify based on renewable energy project experience. They must have designed or engineered, supplied, erected or supervised erection, and commissioned or supervised commissioning of grid-connected solar or wind projects totaling at least 40 MW AC.
At least one reference project must have a capacity of 10 MW AC or more and must have operated successfully for at least six months. Grid-connected rooftop and floating solar projects can meet this requirement.
Another eligibility route is available to companies with industrial project experience. During the previous ten years, bidders must have executed projects as developers or EPC contractors in the power, steel, oil and gas, petrochemical, fertilizer, cement, flue gas desulfurization, or other process industries with an aggregate value of at least ₹3.75 billion (~$39.21 million).
At least one such project must have a total contract value of ₹1.5 billion (~$15.68 million) or more and must have been in successful operation for at least six months before the techno-commercial bid opening.
Such bidders must also have executed at least one electrical substation of 33 kV or higher, including equipment such as circuit breakers and power transformers. The substation must have operated successfully for at least six months.
A bidder meeting the industrial project criterion may also participate by associating or collaborating with, or having a manufacturing license agreement with, a battery manufacturer meeting NTPC&#8217;s specified battery manufacturing experience requirements. The required agreement and letter of support must remain valid until the end of the defect liability period.
The average annual turnover of bidders during the preceding three financial years must be at least ₹4.14 billion (~$4.33 million). A bidder that does not independently meet the turnover requirement can rely on its holding company, subject to the prescribed net worth and financial support requirements.
The bidder&#8217;s net worth must be at least 25% of its paid-up share capital as of the end of the preceding financial year. Its net worth must also not have eroded by more than 30% during the previous three financial years. The erosion condition does not apply if the bidder&#8217;s net worth is at least 100% of its paid-up share capital.
For bidders qualifying through a collaborator or associate, the collaborator or associate must have an average annual turnover of at least ₹414 million (~$4.33 million)  during the preceding three financial years.
In June, NTPC Renewable Energy <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/ntpc-rel-invites-bids-for-960-mwh-battery-storage-system-in-rajasthan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floated</a> an EPC tender to set up a 240 MW/960 MWh BESS at its Devikot Solar Project in Rajasthan.
India added 8.2 GWh of battery energy storage capacity in the first half (1H) of 2026, nearly 84 times the 98.4 MWh installed during the same period last year, according to Mercom India Research’s newly released <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/product/india-energy-storage-landscape-q2-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Q2 and 1H 2026 India’s Energy Storage Landscape Report</a>.
