					</table><p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/anert-100-mw-rooftop-solar-kerala/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kerala government’s Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology  has invited bids to develop rooftop solar projects with a cumulative capacity of 100 MW in Thiruvananthapuram.</a></strong> The scope of work includes supplying, installing, and commissioning multiple solar power systems ranging from 1 kW to 500 kW atop public buildings in Thiruvananthapuram under the Solar City Project. Vendors should commission the solar systems within 45 days of receiving the work order. They must also provide five years of comprehensive operation and maintenance services. The last date to submit the bids is March 3, 2023. Bids will be opened the next day.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/himachal-pradesh-bids-set-100-mw-solar-projects/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Himachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency has invited bids to set up 100 MW of grid-connected solar projects ranging from 250 kW to 5 MW in the state.</a></strong> The last date to submit the bids is March 15, 2023. Bidders must submit an application fee of ₹10,000 (~$120.6) for projects up to 1 MW and ₹100,000 (~$1,206) for projects above 1 MW and up to 5 MW. Bidders must submit ₹100,000 (~$1,206) as an earnest money deposit for solar projects up to 1 MW and ₹200,000 (~$2,441) for solar projects above 1 MW and up to 5 MW.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/sri-lanka-awards-wind-power-projects-adani-green/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adani Green Energy, the renewable energy arm of Adani Group, has been awarded the letter of approval for two wind energy projects to be developed in the Mannar and Ponneryn areas of northern Sri Lanka.</a></strong> The two projects will be developed at a total investment of $442 million. The wind energy project to be developed in Mannar will operate at a capacity of 250 MW, and the other project in Pooneryn will operate at a capacity of 100 MW, according to the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-to-partner-with-fraunhofer-hydrogen-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) have signed a letter of intent for a long-term collaboration focusing on hydrogen and other clean technologies.</strong></a> The partnership is expected to lead to the development of higher Technology Readiness Level for hydrogen energy clusters that are being set up by DST, and also identify existing technologies and potential interventions from Fraunhofer in green hydrogen. The partnership aims to integrate the interventions with indigenous technologies and deploy or calibrate them for Indian conditions. DST will provide the framework for cooperation in the hydrogen valley cluster projects and support activities, and facilitate resources.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/ireda-plan-finance-renewable-projects-foreign-currency/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) plans to finance renewable energy projects in foreign currency for which an office would be established in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT city) in Gandhinagar.</strong></a> Addressing a panel discussion on ‘Scaling up Clean Energy Investment in Emerging Economies’ under the aegis of G20 events at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, IREDA Chairman and Managing Director Pradip Kumar Das said the office in Gandhinagar would be classified as an overseas office. The minister said that the office will help IREDA avoid foreign exchange hedging costs.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/87-5-million-fund-solar-development-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">France-based fund manager Rgreen Invest and investment advisor Echosys Invest have raised €87.5 million (~$92.2 million) as part of their Afrigreen Debt Impact Fund to finance on and off-grid solar power projects for small and medium-sized commercial and industrial consumers in Africa.</a></strong> The first closing includes commitments from the European Investment Bank, the International Finance Corporation, the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries, and PROPARCO, a subsidiary of Agence française de développement Group. Private banks Societe Generale and BNP Paribas also participated in the funding round. Afrigreen targets raising €100 million (~$105.4 million) from development finance institutions and private investors.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/gujarat-bids-921-mw-solar-projects-under-kusum/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paschim Gujarat Vij Company has invited bids to develop 921 MW of solar projects to solarize 11 kV feeders of selected 66/11 kV substations under Component C of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) program.</a></strong> The successful bidder will also have to take care of the project’s operation and maintenance for 25 years. The last date to submit the bids online is March 17, 2023. Bids will be opened the following day. Bidders will have to submit ₹100,000 (~$1,206)/MW of the quoted capacity as an earnest money deposit. The successful bidder must submit ₹500,000 (~$6,029)/MW as a performance bank guarantee within seven days from the date of the issuance of the letter of award.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://mercomindia.com/new-lithium-air-four-times-than-lithium-ion/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have developed a lithium-air battery design that could power domestic airplanes and long-haul trucks.</a></strong> The research, published in a recent issue of <em>Science, </em>was funded by the DOE Vehicle Technologies Office and the Office of Basic Energy Sciences through the Joint Centre for Energy Storage Research. The main new component in this lithium-air battery is a solid electrolyte instead of the usual liquid variety. Batteries with solid electrolytes are not prone to safety issues associated with the liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion and other battery types, which can overheat and catch fire.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/essar-invest-energy-transition-uk-india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Multinational conglomerate Essar Group has launched the Essar Energy Transition (EET) initiative with an investment of $3.6 billion to develop a range of low-carbon energy transition projects over the next five years in the United Kingdom and India.</strong></a> Under the EET initiative, Essar will take measures to support the UK government’s decarbonization policy by investing $2.4 billion across its sites at Stanlow oil refinery which produces over 16% of the UK’s Road transport fuels annually. Through EET, Essar targets achieving 75% mitigation of carbon emissions in the  Stanlow refinery by 2030.</p>

					</table><p>Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, <a href="https://www.iitg.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIT Guwahati</a>, in collaboration with the <a href="https://www.ulisboa.pt/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Lisbon</a>, Portugal, have found a bacterial endoglucanase enzyme capable of breaking down biomatter into simple sugar and bioethanol — a promising renewable fuel that can replace petroleum-based fuel systems.</p>
<p>The discovery has been published in the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/international-journal-of-biological-macromolecules" target="_blank" rel="noopener">International Journal of Biological Macromolecules</a>.</p>
<p>The production of fuel from renewable biological sources has attained significance in recent years because of the impending crisis of dwindling fossil fuel reserves and the environmental pollution associated with power generation from such sources.</p>
<p>The researchers demonstrated the efficacy of a new type of endoglucanase called <em>Rf</em>GH5_4 in breaking down biomass for the eventual conversion to bioethanol fuel, which can be used for the efficient and cost-effective production of lignocellulosic bioethanol on an industrial scale.</p>
<p>Additionally, its ability to break down cellulose and hemicellulose makes it useful in various other applications such as the textile, food, and pulp industry, synthesis of prebiotics, and pharmaceuticals, among others.</p>
<p>The enzyme was derived from a bacterium called <em>Ruminococcus flavefaciens</em>.</p>
<p><em>Ruminococcus flavefaciens </em>was chosen because this bacterium is found in the gut of cows and other cud-chewing animals, which has faced cellulosic pressure for millions of years.</p>
<p>The researchers developed an efficient machinery of <em>Rf</em>GH5_4 to break down cellulose and cellulosic structures into simple sugars. The bacterium harbors a cohort of at least 14 different multimodular enzymes that can break down cellulose, one of which is <em>Rf</em>GH5_4.</p>
<p>Arun Goyal, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati, said, “We characterized endoglucanase, RfGH5_4 and found that it hydrolyzed carboxymethyl cellulose (a lab-scale analog of cellulose) as well as normal amorphous cellulose with greater catalytic efficiency.”</p>
<p>The team’s earlier work on <em>Rf</em>GH5_4 revealed that this endoglucanase is multifunctional and catalytically efficient.</p>
<p>Parmeshwar Gavande, Ph.D. research scholar and the lead author, elaborated, “RfGH5_4 was found to contain some highly flexible loops in its core structure, making room for different carbohydrate polymers during the reaction, thus imparting the multifunctionality to RfGH5_4.”</p>
<p>Further, the researchers pointed out that while agricultural residual biomasses are wasted or burned, causing environmental hazards (including global warming and climate change), their deconstruction by RfGH5_4 might extend its usage in food medicine too.</p>
<p>In July, a research team from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/indian-researchers-extract-hydrogen-biomass/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> a way to extract green hydrogen from biomass, a renewable energy source.</p>
<p>In the same month, the Ministry of Power <a href="https://mercomindia.com/co-firing-biomass-35-thermal-power-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that biomass co-firing in 35 thermal power plants across India has reduced CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons. Fourteen of these plants belonged to NTPC, and 21 to states and the private sector.</p>

IIT Researchers Discover Enzyme that Breaks Down Biomass into Bioethanol Fuel

					</table><p>Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology <a href="https://www.iitr.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(IIT), Roorkee</a>, said they have successfully developed a prototype of a low-cost, high-quality perovskite solar cell that achieved a stable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.05%.</p>
<p>The newly developed perovskite solar cell exhibits long-term operational stability paving the way for the mass commercialization of these solar cells. The cell leads to the optimum phase distribution, enlarged grain size, and comes with enhanced crystallinity.</p>
<p>The efficiency achieved by Soumitra Satapathi from IIT Roorkee’s Department of Physics and team is said to be one of the highest reported PCEs for quasi-two-dimensional (2D) perovskite.</p>
<p>The quasi-2D layers have unique optoelectronic properties with structural diversity that help control the perovskite growth kinetics and play an efficient role as passivating agents for defect annihilation.</p>
<p>Satapathi said, “The perovskite solar cell developed by us are low-cost and can be used as an alternative to silicon solar cells. These are also the prototype solar cells exclusively developed at IIT Roorkee. Perovskite solar cells have demonstrated competitive power conversion efficiencies with the potential for higher performance, but their stability is limited compared to leading alternatives. Our main aim is to optimize the efficiency and to reduce the cost of manufacturing for Perovskite solar cells as much as possible.”</p>
<p>Perovskite solar cells found their significance in photovoltaic technology a decade ago as the potent substitute for silicon solar cells, given their higher energy conversion efficiency and stability. The process of manufacturing perovskite cells is also comparatively simpler and cheaper compared to silicon.</p>
<p>Director IIT Roorkee Professor K. K. Pant said, “The perovskite solar cell developed at IIT Roorkee is an important step towards developing efficient and stable solar cells. This technological development would boost self-reliance in India in the field of renewable energy. We encourage the development of such technologies, which have the potential of not only commercialization but also help in achieving national priorities.”</p>
<p>Institutions and experts worldwide have been performing experiments to achieve stable efficiency in perovskites.</p>
<p>Mercom had previously <a href="https://mercomindia.com/silver-tandem-solar-cells-achieve-record-efficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on how scientists at Empa, Swiss Laboratories for Material Science &amp; Technology developed a low-temperature technique using silver to produce a bifacial perovskite-CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) tandem solar cell, wherein the front side of the cell achieved record efficiency of 19.8% and the rear side displayed 10.9% efficiency.</p>
<p>In June this year, scientists from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the U.S. <a href="https://mercomindia.com/2d-cations-tin-lead-perovskite-solar-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed</a> a new tin-lead perovskite tandem cell merging diverse layers of two chemical compounds achieving a record power conversion efficiency of 25.5%.</p>

<p><strong>The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (</strong><a href="https://mnre.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>MNRE</strong></a><strong>) recently approved part commissioning of inter-state transmission (ISTS) connected solar projects in lots of 10 MW</strong> or more. The decision was taken to help expedite the commissioning of solar power projects and in line with similar facilitation already provided to wind power projects. The special dispensation will be applicable until March 31, 2023.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.kpigreenenergy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>KPI Green Energy</strong></a><strong> signed new long-term power purchase agreements to sell 15.88 MW of wind and solar hybrid power projects under the company&#8217;s independent power producer business segment. </strong>The PPAs were signed with six clients &#8211; J. Korin Spinning (1.80 MW), J S Ecotex (2.70 MW), Oriilon India (2.25 MW), Jay Bharat Metcast (5 MW), Kiri Industries (2.93 MW) and Cheminova India (1.20 MW). The clients will be supplied power from KPI Green Energy&#8217;s upcoming wind-solar hybrid power project of 16.10 MW (comprising 16.10 MW wind and 10 MWdc solar capacity) in Bhavnagar District, Gujarat.</p>
<p><strong>National Solar Energy Federation of India (</strong><a href="https://www.nsefi.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>NSEFI</strong></a><strong>), an umbrella organization for solar industry stakeholders, and the Indian Institute of Technology (</strong><a href="https://www.iitb.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>IIT</strong></a><strong>) Bombay, agreed</strong> to work closely on strategic energy transition technology areas, including solar manufacturing and green hydrogen. The cooperation between NSEFI and the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE), IIT Bombay, is expected to foster industry-academia collaboration in areas including energy innovation, new applications of renewable energy technologies, advanced research in solar photovoltaic material, applications of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning in renewable energy and green hydrogen sector. This cooperation would also aim to develop new India-specific standards in the renewable energy sector while also focusing on specialized training of industry professionals in emerging areas in solar energy.</p>
<p><strong>JSW Steel </strong><a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/119c3087-5a84-4d39-871f-de4548b59f18.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>signed</strong></a><strong> a memorandum of understanding with Germany-based engineering and technology company SMS group to explore multiple cutting-edge solutions and R&amp;D projects to reduce carbon emissions</strong> in its iron and steelmaking operations in India. The collaboration is expected to enable the companies to explore opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and produce green steel in one of the hard-to-abate sectors. To achieve the task of decarbonization at various JSW Steel plants, the SMS group would use its expertise and experience in metallurgy, industrial processes, and digitalization. It would provide its technology experts with design, engineering consultancy, and commissioning for executing various projects. JSW Steel will make available to SMS group raw materials, consumables, and workforce to explore solutions for the implementation of general decarbonization projects.</p>
<p><strong>The U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management </strong><a href="https://www.energy.gov/fecm/articles/us-department-energy-invests-47-million-improve-hydrogen-turbine-performance-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> $4.7 million in funding for six projects</strong> to advance the development of ceramic-based materials to improve the efficiency of hydrogen-fuelled turbines that may one day be used in clean power plants. Projects selected under this funding opportunity announcement will focus on the research and development of ceramic matrix composite components, which allow hydrogen turbines to operate at higher working temperatures, ultimately improving cycle efficiency.</p>
<p><strong>EDF Renewables North America </strong><a href="https://www.edf-re.com/press-release/edf-renewables-north-america-signs-agreement-with-mcdonalds-corporation-for-apollo-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement with McDonald&#8217;s Corporation.</strong> The 255 MWac/332 MWdc Apollo Solar project will help McDonald&#8217;s to meet its sustainability goals and advance its commitment to climate action. Apollo Solar, located in Texas, is expected to begin delivery of low-carbon electricity in June 2024.  It would create approximately 300 jobs during the 2023-2024 construction phase, with more than $30 million generated in new tax revenue over the operating life for taxing entities.  Apollo Solar will produce clean energy while minimizing impacts to wildlife, habitat, and other environmental resources.</p>

<p><strong>Fluence Energy, a U.S.-based energy storage company, </strong><a href="https://ir.fluenceenergy.com/news-releases/news-release-details/fluence-announces-india-technology-centre-underscoring" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> the opening of a new global technology center in Bengaluru.</strong> The center is expected to support the company’s global product strategy by growing engineering capabilities, scaling global talent, and strengthening Fluence’s local presence in the country. The technology team is expected to be the key to expanding the company’s sixth-generation product line, which is delivering a range of grid services to customers worldwide and creating next-generation products.</p>
<p><strong>The Prime Minister’s office </strong><a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1839786" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>outlined</strong></a><strong> the details of the PM GatiShakti-National Master Plan (NMP) for infrastructure development, launched in October 2021.</strong> The plan was launched to bring different ministries/utilities and infrastructure planning under a single unified vision across all sectors such as Highways, Railways, Aviation, Gas, Power Transmission, and Renewable Energy. The GatiShakti NMP portal will provide a ‘One-click Comprehensive view’ to steer and simplify the planning and implementation process by reducing the time and cost of implementation in power transmission projects.  It would also aid in improving logistics efficiency through a single digital and multi-modal portal. In developing power transmission projects, the portal is expected to play a critical role in the planning, tendering, implementation, and approval stages.  The portal will map the requisite details of the nine high-impact projects by the Ministry of Power by creating a separate layer of ISTS transmission lines incorporating primary data like Line route, tower location, location of substation, and name of the owner.</p>
<p><strong>Azure Power, a renewable power producer in India, </strong><a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/azure-power-becomes-the-first-renewable-energy-company-in-india-to-be-sa8000-certified-301582168.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> that it was awarded SA8000:2014 certification, an international standard for social accountability. </strong>The company claims to be India&#8217;s first renewable energy company to have been awarded this certification. SA8000 is the world&#8217;s leading social certification program and is an auditable standard that requires organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace, including the supply chain.</p>
<p><strong>IIT Kharagpur </strong><a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1839484" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> that it has developed an indigenous, efficient, affordable, and certified BLDC (Brushless DC) motor and smart controller for e-Rickshaws</strong> under the Indigenous Development of Electric Vehicle Sub-systems program. The technology was transferred to Brushless Motor India for commercial production. The program was initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to address the challenge of having to import most of the EV components and to increase local manufacturing.</p>
<p><strong>Nordic Solar, a Denmark-based energy company, </strong><a href="https://nordicsolar.eu/en/nordic-solar-enters-sweden-with-four-new-solar-parks-in-the-south/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>signed</strong></a><strong> a partnership agreement with Helios Nordic Energy to develop and establish four solar parks in southern Sweden</strong> with a combined capacity of 220 MW. The four solar parks are expected to generate energy for private consumers or businesses equivalent to the consumption of 44,000 private households. The solar parks are expected to be completed in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Nordic Solar, which develops, builds, and operates solar parks on an industrial scale, is now in 12 European countries.</p>

					</table><p>Scientists at the <a href="http://www.iitkgp.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur</a>, have used nanomaterials to develop sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries and supercapacitors that can be integrated into e-cycles for rapid charging.</p>
<p>The aim of the research supported by the Department of Science and Technology (<a href="https://dst.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DST</a>) is to reduce the cost of e-cycles using low-cost technologies based on Na-ion. A few patents on using these Na-ion-based batteries in e-cycles are already in the pipeline.</p>
<p>The research on supercapacitors was published in the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-power-sources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Journal of Power Sources</a>.</p>
<p>Of the fewer suitable materials used to manufacture batteries, sodium has a high natural abundance on the planet. The availability of sodium also makes it a potential alternative to largely used lithium-ion batteries, as Na-ion-based batteries have enhanced performance and can be scaled up to mass production for industrial operations.</p>
<p>The researchers synthesized sodium iron phosphates and sodium manganese phosphates (NaMnPO4) to obtain sodium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Compared to other reported metal oxides, the electrochemical performance of NaMnPO4 shows a much more stable tolerance towards varying magnetic fields.</p>
<p>The team is conducting the economic viability of their research. With further study, Na-ion-based e-cycles can be made available to the general public for ₹10,000-15,000 (~$126-$190), making them 25% cheaper than e-cycles based on lithium-ion storage technologies.</p>
<p>During the study, the IIT team discovered that the sodium-ion cell could be discharged to zero volts, similar to a capacitor, making it a safer alternative than many other storage technologies. The quick charging feature of the Na-ion batteries encouraged the team to integrate power e-cycles with sodium batteries, an easy and affordable substitute for lithium-ion.</p>
<p>The team also observed that disposing of Na-ion-based batteries is simple, which would help promote green transport and address the challenges of climate change.</p>
<p>In another experiment, scientists at the Beijing University of Technology <a href="https://mercomindia.com/researchers-develop-stable-anode-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> to have synthesized a series of phosphorous(P)-/tin (Sn)-based composites that have anode materials with higher capacity and improved stability. The synthesis enabled a sodium-ion battery with a capacity retention of 97.7% after 50 cycles.</p>
<p>Indian scientists <a href="https://mercomindia.com/indian-scientists-supercapacitors-electrode-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed</a> a low-cost supercapacitor device in 2020, which exhibited excellent capacitive retention using a novel electrode material. The team developed a scalable and affordable electrochemical process to synthesize Nickel Cobaltite (NiCo2O4) electrodes containing nanosheet structures incorporated with oxygen vacancies as an active material for hybrid supercapacitors.</p>

Indian Scientists Develop Sodium-ion Batteries for E-Cycles Using Nanomaterials

<p>A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (<a href="https://www.iitm.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIT-M</a>) are developing a futuristic model for zinc-air batteries to power electric vehicles (EV).</p>
<p>The technology under development is based on battery-swapping, wherein e-vehicle users would be able to exchange used zinc cassettes in their battery with fully charged zinc cassettes.</p>
<p>The researchers are developing mechanically rechargeable zinc-air batteries and have filed for patents. The team claimed that the zinc-air batteries are economical compared to the primarily used lithium-ion batteries.</p>
<p>With rising demand for EVs and charging infrastructure, the supply chain of lithium-ion batteries remained affected due to a lack of availability. The IIT-M team aims to address the scarcity of lithium-ion with zinc as the latter material is abundantly available in India.</p>
<p>Assistant professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT-M, Aravind Kumar Chandiran, observed, “Currently, the only option available with the Li-ion batteries is that the entire used battery pack must be removed and swapped with another battery pack, which results in double the capital investment. Battery swapping is a major advantage in the zinc-air batteries.”</p>
<p>While the researchers await the patent, they have also approached stakeholders in India for collaboration to deploy zinc-air batteries in EVs. The team also claims that zinc batteries have a longer shelf-life than widely used lithium-ion, as the former is water-based.</p>
<p>The IIT-M team has developed zinc-air cells and is currently attempting the development of zinc-air packs for EVs. The researchers are also mulling a proposal for separate zinc-charging stations that cater to EV users who can swap their zinc-air batteries with the recharged ones.</p>
<p>India’s EV sector has witnessed strong growth with the Union government extending support by implementing market- and- consumer-centric policies. The Ministry of Heavy Industries (<a href="https://heavyindustries.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MHI</a>) <a href="https://mercomindia.com/2877-ev-charging-stations-approved-under-fame-ii/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> 2,877 electric charging stations in 68 cities across 25 states and union territories under the second phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) program.</p>
<p>The demand for metals used in EV batteries has been growing worldwide. The International Energy Agency (<a href="https://www.iea.org/programmes/electric-vehicles-initiative" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEA</a>) recently <a href="https://mercomindia.com/ev-battery-supply-chains-stressed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">observed</a> that the global battery supply chain for EVs is under immense pressure due to peak prices of crucial metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.</p>

Zinc Batteries an Economical Replacement for Li-Ion in Electric Vehicles: IIT Madras

<p>The Power Finance Corporation Limited (<a href="https://www.pfcindia.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">PFC Limited</a>) has signed a Memorandum of Association (MoA) with the Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur (IIT-K) for training, research, and entrepreneurship development in smart grid technology.</p>
<p>In its press statement, PFC Limited said that it would provide financial support worth ₹23.89 million (~319,891) to IIT-K from its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.</p>
<p>“The objective of the pact is to provide support to <a href="https://www.iitk.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">IIT-K</a> in developing infrastructure for research and development of smart grid technology. As part of the project, IIT-K will also provide training on smart grid technology to 90 participants and provide fellowship to nine selected candidates for the development of ideas on smart grid technology. The fellows will be assisted by the Start-up Innovation and Incubation Center (SIIC) and encouraged to take entrepreneurial activities,” said R. Murahari, Executive Director of CSR, PFC Limited.</p>
<p>Last year, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/iit-kanpur-smart-grid-pilot-solar-pv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">floated</a> an expression of interest for three smart grid field pilots combining renewable sources (solar and biomass) and storage (Lithium-ion and flow batteries). This was part of a project called U.S.-India Collaborative for Smart Distribution System with Storage (UI-ASSIST).</p>
<p>Previously, the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R), <a href="https://mercomindia.com/iit-roorkee-abb-smart-campus-development/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">signed</a> an agreement with ABB to become a smart campus. The agreement also includes the creation of a smart grid resource center, joint R&amp;D facilities, and support for Ph.D. students. The project would also support technology solutions like smart metering, SCADA, ring main unit, and wireless broadband communication platform.</p>
<p>Also, Sweden and India recently <a href="https://mercomindia.com/iit-roorkee-abb-smart-campus-development/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">announced</a> the India-Sweden collaborative industrial research and development program at the India Smart Utilities Week. This collaborative effort is co-funded by the Department of Science &amp; Technology (<a href="https://dst.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">DST</a>) and the <a href="https://rio.jrc.ec.europa.eu/en/organisations/swedish-energy-agency" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Swedish Energy Agency</a>. The primary object of this joint exercise is to address the challenges faced by both countries in the smart grid segment. The Swedish Energy Agency has committed $2.6 million (~₹191.13 million) for four years for research in the field of smart grids. DST has also pledged the support of ₹180 million (~$2.44 million) for the development of new projects, products, and technologies.</p>

Power Finance Corporation Gives ₹23.89 Million to IIT-Kanpur for Smart Grid Research

<p>Amity University has joined a select league of colleges and educational institutions that have gone solar to meet energy demands and usher in a greener, cleaner tomorrow. Amity’s solar PV projects have been installed in the Jaipur, Manesar and Gwalior campuses with a cumulative capacity of 1.8 MW.</p>
<p>These projects have been developed by <a href="https://cleanmaxsolar.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CleanMax Solar</a> under OPEX model.</p>
<p>The Amity University Jaipur campus will meet almost 50 percent of its electricity requirement from solar.</p>
<p>The solar projects are expected to generate over 2,762,388 kWh units per annum of electricity cumulatively, thereby abating 2,265 tons of carbon dioxide annually for the next 25 years.</p>
<p>The power is being supplied to Amity University at a tariff cheaper than the grid electricity tariff, thereby ensuring cumulative savings of over ₹10 million per annum.</p>
<p>An increasing number of educational institutions are turning to solar as it is a cheaper source of electricity and also helps curb toxic carbon emissions. Of late, a number of educational centers across the country have adopted cost-effective rooftop solar as a way to build a sustainable future.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://mercomindia.com/iit-kharagpur-eoi-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">May 2018</a>, IIT Kharagpur had invited expression of interest to develop 5.5 MW of solar projects.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/uttarakhand-gb-pant-university-rooftop-tender/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Recently</a>, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Uttarakhand’s Pantnagar town tendered a 5 MW grid-connected rooftop solar PV project.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://mercomindia.com/jamia-millia-islamia-tenders-2-25-mw-ac-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">June 2017</a>, Jamia Millia Islamia, a reputed government college, tendered a 2.25 MW (AC) solar PV project to be developed under a RESCO model at Jamia Millia Islamia University premises in Delhi.</p>
<p>In the <a href="https://mercomindia.com/reil-tenders-950-kw-grid-connected-rooftop-solar-jaipur/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">same month</a>, Mercom also reported that Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, tendered 950 kW of grid-connected rooftop solar to be developed on top of buildings owned by Rajasthan University in Jaipur.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://mercomindia.com/seci-tenders-8-mw-dc-rooftop-solar-project-varanasi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">July 2017</a>, Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) tendered an 8 MW (DC) grid-connected rooftop solar PV project on behalf of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.</p>
