					</table><p>A team of researchers from the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (<a href="https://www.zsw-bw.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ZSW</a>) in Stuttgart, Germany, has combined perovskite with copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) to build a tandem solar module with an efficiency of 21% and above.</p>
<p>While the best performance attained with the tandem solar modules is just slightly higher than 22%, the institute claims to have already achieved an efficiency of up to 26.6% in smaller laboratory cells.</p>
<p>The team said their prototype, with an area of nine square centimeters, features scalable component architecture suitable for industrial manufacturing.</p>
<p>ZSW partnered with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.kit.edu/english/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KIT</a>) in this research initiative.</p>
<p>The tandem module is made of two solar modules sandwiched against each other and, as a result, delivers more electrical energy than conventional panels. The different active layers work together to increase efficiency by jointly making better use of the width of the solar spectrum than each single solar cell does on its own.</p>
<p>The institute said the tandem module is a promising next-generation technology to accelerate the rollout of photovoltaic systems that generate more solar power. Currently, the efficiency of silicon solar cells is fast approaching the practical limit of around 27%, and as it stands, tandem solar modules can increase the efficiency to well over 30%.</p>
<p>The researchers began by optimizing the submodules, wherein the top perovskite half-module had to be highly efficient and semi-transparent to allow enough light to pass through the bottom module. The team made several improvements to this end, including developing more transparent electrodes and enhancing the passivation of boundary layers.</p>
<p>The institute said their tandem structure outperformed individual cells or modules in terms of efficiency, demonstrating the superiority of tandem solar modules.</p>
<p><strong>Benefits of tandem solar modules</strong></p>
<p>Tandem solar cells that pair perovskite with CIGS offer benefits beyond high efficiency. This thin-film technology can also be deposited on plastic or steel films to make light, flexible modules that lend themselves to many more use cases.</p>
<p>They can be installed conventionally in solar parks and seamlessly integrated into vehicles and on factory roofs that cannot handle heavy loads. It also costs less to generate power with thin-film photovoltaic modules.</p>
<p>The institute’s experts used these thin-film technologies exclusively for their module. The bottom of the module is made of perovskite and CIGS.</p>
<p>The technology has been ramped up for mass production in earlier projects by the institute and industry experts. ZSW now aims to scale up further and develop tandem thin-film technology in a joint effort with interested industry clients.</p>
<p>Recently, another team of researchers from Northwestern University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Toledo <a href="https://mercomindia.com/researchers-claim-solar-cell-shows-27-4-efficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> to have developed an all-perovskite tandem solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 27.4%, which is comparable with traditional silicon solar cells.</p>
<p>In October, researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratory for Material Science and Technology claimed to have <a href="https://mercomindia.com/swiss-researchers-record-efficiency-for-cigs-solar-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">achieved</a> an efficiency of 22.2% for CIGS flexible solar cells.</p>

Researchers Claim 21% and Higher Efficiency in Perovskite-CIGS Tandem Cells

<p>Beijing-based <a href="https://www.hanergy.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hanergy Holding Group Ltd</a>, the thin-film solar power company, has announced that its Chengdu Research &amp; Development Center has once again breached the world record for its silicon heterojunction (SHJ) technology with a record-setting 25.11% conversion efficiency.</p>
<p>The result has been verified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH). The certifying agency has confirmed that the company has broken its earlier record of 24.85% conversion efficiency. The latest record-breaking SHJ technology utilizes the low-cost ITO transparent conductive films and readily available screen-printed electrodes bringing down the total cost of mass production and paving the way for broader market adoption.</p>
<p>With its water resistance property, 30+ year lifespan, and high conversion efficiency, the SHJ technology for long has been considered as one of the most competitive and innovative technologies in the solar power arena. Coupled with no light decay, no potential induced attenuation (PID), and high-temperature power output, the SHJ offers a solution for ground power stations, distributed power stations, vertical installations, and fisheries or agricultural PV stations among others.</p>
<p>Speaking on the latest development, Xu Xiaohua, vice president of Thin Film Power Group at Hanergy, said, “Our SHJ technology is a source for great pride for everyone at Hanergy. Despite being only three years old, the recent breakthrough shows that our heterojunction division continues to make great progress and that the field of SHJ continues to hold great significance to our business in the large-scale photovoltaic ground power stations and distributed rooftop markets.”</p>
<p>Hanergy now has complete control over the intellectual property rights of the SHJ solar cell production line and turnkey projects. Over the past two years, Hanergy’s solar cell conversion efficiency has been on an upward slope and has gained a gradual increase of 1%.</p>
<p>The company says that it currently holds six world records in several thin-film solar technology fields, which includes silicon hetero-junction thin-film batteries (SHJ), copper indium gallium selenium (CIGS) and gallium arsenide selenide (GaAs) reaffirming its position as the leader in the high-efficiency thin-film solar energy.</p>
<p>Recently, MiaSolé Hi-Tech Corp, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hanergy, announced that the <a href="https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE</a> had confirmed an 18.64% aperture area efficiency on a commercial size flexible PV module. Researchers around the world are actively working on increasing the efficiency of solar modules that play a crucial role in boosting the overall generation from a solar project.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, a group of scientists at the Australian National University <a href="https://mercomindia.com/australian-research-team-achieves-efficiency-solar/">achieved</a> a breakthrough in increasing the efficiency of solar cells. The efficiency of a solar cell refers to the part of the energy from sunlight (photons) that can be converted into electricity by the solar cell. The team at ANU achieved a 21.6% solar cell efficiency. This was the highest value attained for perovskite cells above specific dimensions.</p>
