					</table><p><a href="https://www.directory.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia</a> has invited bids to set up 4 GW /16 GWh of dispatchable energy storage capacity in the National Electricity Market (NEM).</p>
<p>Bids must be submitted by February 6, 2026. Successful bids will be announced in June 2026.</p>
<p>In contrast to the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tenders, which focus purely on renewable generation, this tender is specifically for dispatchable storage projects.</p>
<p>Bidders must propose projects that store electricity by importing power from the NEM grid, an eligible renewable energy source under the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act, or a mix of both.</p>
<p>Projects must be located in participating NEM jurisdictions.</p>
<p>Standalone projects must offer at least 30 MW of registered capacity and demonstrate a minimum storage duration of two hours at commercial operation.</p>
<p>A key feature of the tender is aggregated bidding, which allows multiple smaller dispatchable components, each between 5 MW and 30 MW and meeting the two-hour duration rule, to be bundled into a single bid, provided all components sit within the same NEM region.</p>
<p>Bidders must show a credible pathway to reach commercial operations before December 31, 2030, with projects targeting earlier commissioning expected to score better in the tender assessment.</p>
<p>The CIS aims to develop renewable generation and firming projects to deliver cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy to homes and businesses as coal is phased out. Through this program, the Australian government plans to deliver 82% of the nation&#8217;s renewable energy capacity, or 40 GW, by 2030.</p>
<p>Recently,  Australia has <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-floats-tender-for-5-gw-renewable-energy-projects/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">invited</a> bids for 5 GW of renewable energy projects in the NEM as part of the seventh tender under the CIS.</p>
<p>In August, the Australian government <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-tenders-renewable-energy-and-storage-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floated</a> the fifth and sixth tenders for 1,600 MW of renewable energy and 2,400 MWh of energy storage capacity, respectively, in Western Australia as part of the CIS program. The storage projects must use grid or renewable energy.</p>
<p>Earlier, Australia <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-latest-renewables-plus-storage-auction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the results of the fourth auction under CIS. A total of 20 projects were selected, delivering 6,640 MW of renewable energy, compared to the 6,000 MW originally planned. Twelve of these projects include battery storage alongside wind or solar capacity, totaling 3,509 MW/11,444 MWh.</p>

					</table><p><a href="https://www.wa.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Western Australia</a> has awarded four battery energy storage projects with a total capacity of 654 MW/2,595 MWh under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS).</p>
<p>The projects are scheduled to be operational by October 2027.</p>
<p>The projects will exceed the 500 MW/2,000 MWh capacity tendered. This will be enough to meet the peak electricity load for over 600,000 homes in Western Australia for four hours.</p>
<p>The successful projects are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Boddington Giga Battery (324 MW) operated by PGS Energy, 120 km south-east of Perth</li>
<li>Merredin Big Battery (100 MW) operated by Atmos Renewables, 230 km east of Perth</li>
<li>Muchea Big Battery (150 MW) operated by Neoen, 43 km north-east of Perth</li>
<li>Waroona Renewable Energy Project &#8211; Stage 1 (80 MW) operated by Frontier Energy, 120 km south of Perth.</li>
</ul>
<p>The projects have committed a total investment of AU$145 million (~$91.25 million) in shared benefits to local project communities and AU$41.5 million (~$26.1 million) in initiatives for local First Nations groups.</p>
<p>They will provide important backup to Western Australia’s south-west grid, including Perth, ensuring reliability, particularly at times of peak demand.</p>
<p>CIS encourages new investments in clean dispatchable capacity, such as battery storage and generation, such as solar and wind. It provides a long-term revenue safety net that decreases financial risk for investors promoting renewable energy projects.</p>
<p>It aims to help the Australian Government deliver its 82% renewable electricity by 2030 target and an additional 32 GW of capacity by 2030.</p>
<p>The 32 GW includes 23 GW of renewable and 9 GW of clean dispatchable capacity.</p>
<p>Last year, the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-selects-19-renewable-energy-projects-with-6-38-gw-capacity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">selected</a> 19 renewable energy projects totaling 6.38 GW, including eight hybrid power projects of 3.6 GWh under the CIS Tender 1. The clean energy generated through these projects will be connected to the National Electricity Market.</p>
<p>In November, Australian Energy Market Operator Services <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-invites-bids-for-wind-energy-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> registrations for the CIS Tender 4 to facilitate the development of 6 GW of renewable energy projects within Australia’s NEM.</p>

					</table><p>The Australian <a href="https://www.dcceew.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water</a> has invited bids to develop up to 600 MW of four-hour equivalent or 2,400 MWh energy storage projects in South Australia or Victoria.</p>
<p>The Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) South Australia-Victoria (SA-Vic) tender seeks to set up energy storage projects with a continuous discharge capability for a minimum duration of 2 hours at their nameplate capacity and a minimum size of 30 MW. Eligible projects must be situated in South Australia or Victoria.</p>
<p>The tender will allocate 800 MWh each to South Australia and Victoria, and an additional 800 MWh will be allocated to either.</p>
<p>CIS is an initiative by the Australian Government designed to stimulate fresh investments in dispatchable renewable energy generation and storage.</p>
<p>The tender would follow a merit-based process with two stages:</p>
<ul>
<li>Stage A involves submitting project bids and closing at 5 pm AEDT on February 23, 2024.</li>
<li>Stage B covers financial value bids, scheduled for April 2024 (exact date to be confirmed).</li>
</ul>
<p>Stage A of the tender is now open, and the registration period will conclude on February 16, 2024.</p>
<p>Projects selected through the CIS SA-Vic tender are expected to contribute clean, dispatchable capacity to the national electricity grid by the end of 2027.</p>
<p>This initiative aims to enhance the energy system&#8217;s reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability for all Australians.</p>
<p>Australian Energy Market Operator (<a href="https://aemo.com.au/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AEMO</a>), in conjunction with its subsidiary AEMO Service (<a href="https://aemoservices.com.au/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ASL</a>), will oversee the competitive CIS SA-Vic tender on behalf of the Australian Government and provide recommendations.</p>
<p>The Australian Government will then choose projects to receive revenue support under the CIS based on AEMO&#8217;s suggestions.</p>
<p>Recently, Squadron Energy, Neoen Australia, A-CAES NSW (Hydrostor Australia), Lightsource Development Services Australia, and Ark Energy Projects were <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/australia-renewables-storage-auction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> winners in the AEMO auction to develop 950 MW of renewable energy projects and 550 MW of long-duration storage.</p>
<p>Earlier, AEMO had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/new-south-wales-tender-receives-bids-and-storage-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> bids for over 8 GW of wind, solar, and long-duration storage projects in the first round of the inaugural tendering process of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. Of the total capacity, bids were received for over 5.5 GW of wind and solar and 2.5 GW of long-duration storage projects.</p>
