Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy (SWREL) has won Coal India’s (CIL) auction for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) package for a 875 MW grid-connected solar project at Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam’s 2,000 MW Solar Park in Pugal, Rajasthan.

The contract value is estimated at ₹34.9 billion (~$376.75 million).

The tender was floated in July 2025.

SWREL must design, engineer, procure, erect, test, and commission the solar project.  It must also provide comprehensive operation and maintenance (O&M) services for two years.

It must also conduct multi–level inspections, store equipment at the site, and perform the project’s associated civil works.

The project entails monitoring the modules’ performance data before they become operational.

SWREL must ensure a capacity utilization factor of at least 25% for the project.

The project must utilize modules and cells listed from the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers. The project must be completed within 24 months of the commencement of work.

For the same project, Gujarat-based solar company Ahasolar Technologies had received a work order to provide owner’s engineering and project management consultancy services in December 2025.

SWREL has also received an order for a 50 MW project in Maharashtra from an Indian private independent power producer. Its EPC order inflow has exceeded ₹100.62 billion (~$1.08 billion) in the financial year (FY) 2026.

SWREL provides EPC services for utility-scale solar, floating solar, hybrid, energy storage, and wind solutions. The company has a total portfolio of over 26.1 GW of renewable energy projects. SWREL also manages an O&M portfolio of 10.1 GW solar power projects, including those constructed by third parties.

CIL has set a target to turn net-zero by installing 3 GW of solar capacity by FY 2028.

As of December 2025, CIL and its subsidiaries had installed around 247 MW of renewable energy capacity. This figure is expected to rise to 675 MW by the end of the current fiscal year, with upcoming additions from a 100-MW project in Patan and a 300-MW project in Khavda, both in Gujarat.

Coal India stepped up its renewable energy investments, incurring a capital expenditure (CAPEX) of ₹9.61 billion (~$106.11 million) on solar projects in the FY 2026 until January. The expenditure represents 132% achievement against the progressive target of ₹7.29 billion (~$804.9 million) for the first 10 months of FY 2026.

Last year, CIL floated an EPC tender to set up 3,000 MW grid-connected solar projects anywhere in India on a turnkey basis. The projects are proposed in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
