For energy-intensive industries, electricity costs can account for a significant share of operating expenses, making rooftop solar an attractive option to reduce dependence on grid power and lower energy bills.

Atul Feeds, which operates a manufacturing facility in Solapur, Maharashtra, turned to rooftop solar to address its high electricity costs and recurring voltage fluctuations. A 550 kW rooftop solar system installed by Luminous Power Technologies at the facility is now helping the company save around 40,000 units of electricity every month and more than ₹5 million (~$56,000) annually.

The project uses Luminous solar panels and inverters. The manufacturing facility operates round the clock, making electricity a major operating expense. Before installing the rooftop solar system, electricity accounted for 80% of the facility’s production costs, and monthly electricity bills reached ₹2.5 million (~$28,000), according to Luminous.

The facility also experienced frequent voltage drops, causing machinery shutdowns and disrupting manufacturing operations.

After the installation, the facility saves about 40,000 units (kWh) of electricity every month,  around 480,000 units annually.

The rooftop solar installation has also addressed the voltage-drop-related and improved the plant’s operational efficiency and reliability.

In June, Luminous supplied the modules and inverters for New Delhi-based textile mill RMP Group, which opted for a 433-kW rooftop solar installation at its Faridabad facility to reduce power costs.

According to Mercom’s Q2 and 1H 2026 Rooftop Solar Market Report, India added 6.6 GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first half of the calendar year 2026, up 131% compared to the 2.8 GW installed in 1H 2025. In the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, India added 3.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity, a 39% increase compared to the 2.7 GW installed in Q1 2026.
