It is not only industries with huge power requirements that are recognizing the benefits of switching to solar energy. National institutions of repute are also going green by reducing their carbon footprint by installing solar panels on their rooftops.
A recent instance is that of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities in New Delhi. The institute has installed a 102 kW rooftop solar system, which generates enough power to run rehabilitation machines and cater to other energy needs.
Institute Director Dr Jitendra Sharma highlighted that the installation of the rooftop system has resulted in an estimated 30% reduction in electricity costs.
The institute, an autonomous organization under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, runs graduate and postgraduate courses in rehabilitation and has over 700 students. It also offers outpatient clinical services.
According to an official, the institute had a monthly power expenditure ranging from ₹500,000 (~$5,819.2) to ₹600,000 (~$6,983.04), depending on the season. It saves between ₹100,000 (~$1,163.84) and ₹150,000 (~$1,745.76) or ₹3.5 (~$0.04)/kWh each month by switching to solar energy.
At good irradiance levels, the project can generate 100 units of electricity a day.
The project set up by Legrand was commissioned in January 2025.
Religious institutions have also been increasingly adopting solar power. Ramakrishna Yogashrama, a spiritual and academic centre located in Bengaluru’s outskirts, has successfully implemented multiple rooftop solar systems to meet its energy needs.
At a recent C&I Clean Energy Meet hosted by Mercom India in Mumbai, industry experts shared insights on how businesses can save on power bills by switching to solar and choosing between open access and rooftop solar solutions.
Mercom India has been organizing a series of C&I Clean Energy Meets, designed to provide energy buyers with the knowledge and tools they need to adopt clean energy solutions and reduce their power costs.
The next event in the series is scheduled to be held in Hyderabad on August 22, 2025.
