Financing Renewables in India – Where Investments are Coming From

The shift towards clean energy is gaining momentum, and with it comes the challenge of financing large-scale renewable energy projects. While renewable energy costs have decreased over the past decade, significant investment is still needed for higher capacity additions if India has to realize its net zero goals.

Mercom India will bring together industry experts to discuss the financing mechanisms at the ‘Mercom India Renewables Summit 2023,’ an exclusive event on April 26-27 in New Delhi.

At a session titled ‘Financing Renewables – Where is the money coming from?‘ scheduled for April 27, 2023, panelists will share information and opinions on financing avenues for projects, new manufacturing facilities, expansion, products, and startups.

The panel will have P K Sinha, ED (Projects) at PFC; Pankaj Sindwani, Chief Business Officer at Tata Capital; Hitesh Paliwal, Sr VP & Zonal Head, North Zone Corporate Banking Group at SBI; Parin Mehta, Chief Financial Officer at Virescent; and Akhil Dokania, Director at Avendus.

Priya Sanjay, Managing Director, Mercom India, will moderate the session.

The session will explore various financing avenues for renewable energy projects in India. These financing options could include a mix of public and private investment, international climate finance, green bonds, and other innovative financing mechanisms. Various financing sources will also be part of the discussion.

In addition, the panelists will discuss the regulatory and policy frameworks that support the growth of renewable energy financing.

The ready availability of financing options for renewable energy projects is essential to ensure that the sector continues to grow and achieve its ambitious goals while also providing investors with attractive returns.

According to Union Minister of Power R.K Singh, India will need an investment of ₹14.5 trillion (~$177.25 billion) by 2027 to install a renewable generation capacity of 210 GW and a battery storage capacity of 8.6 GW/ 34.7 GWh to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity.

Mercom will also host its third annual Mercom India Awards at the Summit, recognizing the exceptional achievement and technological innovations by companies contributing to India’s clean energy industry.

The event will also, for the first time, feature a Startup Pitch Competition, which will provide the stage for Indian entrepreneurs and companies to present their innovative cleantech ideas or technologies in early-stage development.
