Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nel ASA, has announced a technology licensing agreement with Reliance Industries (RIL). The agreement grants RIL an exclusive license to manufacture and utilize Nel’s alkaline electrolyzers in India and for global captive use.

The agreement is expected to create a strong synergy between RIL’s experience in building global-scale businesses and Nel’s technological expertise.

This collaboration will also focus on continuous performance improvements and cost optimization. Through joint research and development, value engineering, standardization, and modularization, both companies aim to enhance the competitiveness of the alkaline technology platform.

The agreement allows Nel to procure equipment from Reliance for its projects while continuing to serve the Indian market with other technology platforms not covered by the agreement.

“The signing of this agreement is a great milestone in Nel’s history. Reliance is an impressive company with enormous ambitions as a global producer of renewable hydrogen, and I am proud that they have selected Nel as their technology partner,” said Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel.

Volldal added, “In addition to supporting Reliance in achieving their global aspirations, Nel will, through this agreement, get a revenue stream from a rapidly growing market Nel could not have accessed on its own.”

Reliance is developing a multi-gigawatt, fully integrated new energy value chain. This project aims to transition from photons to green molecules, ensuring abundant and affordable sustainable energy access.

In January, Reliance Electrolyzer Manufacturing won 300 MW capacity in Solar Energy Corporation of India’s tender to set up 1.5 GW of electrolyzer manufacturing capacities across India. The manufacturing capacities will be set up under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s Tranche-I of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) program.

Last year, Reliance Industries said it aims to install 100 GW of clean energy capacity by 2030 to contribute significantly to sustainability.
