The Government-owned transmission utility, Power Grid Corporation of India’s (POWERGRID) Board has approved raising funds of up to ₹60 billion (~$676.05 million) through an unsecured rupee term loan or a line of credit from the State Bank of India (SBI).
As of October 31, 2025, the company operates 1,81,054 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and manages 287 substations across its network with 1,500 transmission lines, 5,71,000 MVA, transformation capacity, and system availability of 99.84%.
The company currently has projects worth approximately ₹1,480 billion (~$16.7 billion) under execution and development. This includes projects through tariff-based competitive bidding totaling around ₹990 billion (~$11.16 billion), regulated tariff mechanism (RTM) projects valued at about ₹90 billion (~$1.1 billion), new RTM projects worth ₹370 billion (~$4.17 billion), and other projects amounting to nearly ₹26 billion (~$293.2 million). Collectively, these projects represent a strong and diverse portfolio spanning critical infrastructure and energy initiatives.
The company has set a target to meet 50% of its electricity consumption through renewable energy sources by 2025. It plans to achieve this target through a combination of large-scale solar projects and rooftop solar installations across its operational facilities.
To finance its projects, PGCIL has been raising funds through various instruments, including long-term and short-term bonds, commercial paper, and loans.
In August 2025, POWERGRID received approval to raise to ₹50 billion (~$569.3 million) via private placement of bonds. The 82nd issue of POWERGRID bonds in FY 2026 comprises a base size of ₹10 billion (~$113.86 million) and a greenshoe size of ₹40 billion (~$455.4 million). The bonds will be unsecured, non-convertible, non-cumulative, redeemable, and taxable.
In April this year, POWERGRID announced it would raise ₹60 billion (~$720 million) through a private placement of bonds.
POWERGRID’s green energy corridors and transmission systems have facilitated the evacuation of power from solar power parks. It has already installed 7.6 MW of rooftop solar systems at 118 locations. Furthermore, the installation of 7.5 MW at 96 locations is currently in the planning and implementation process.
Recently, POWERGRID received a letter of intent from REC Power Development and Consultancy to establish a 765 kV interstate transmission system (ISTS) between Parli New, Maharashtra, and Bidar, Karnataka, on a build, own, operate, and transfer basis.
In September this year, POWERGRID acquired Davanagere Power Transmission (DPTL), a special purpose vehicle to establish a transmission system strengthening project at Davanagere, Karnataka, for the integration of renewable energy.
