The Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) has won PFC Consulting’s auction to augment the existing interstate transmission system (ISTS) capacity by 4.5 GW and construct line bays at the Mandsaur substation in Madhya Pradesh.
The project will be executed to evacuate 2,998 MW of renewable energy from the Mandsaur power substation and an additional 1,500 MW, comprising 600 MW from Sprng Energy and 900 MW from NTPC Renewable Energy.
The tender was floated in March 2025.
Apart from POWERGRID, KCC Buildcon, and Techno Electric and Engineering Company, qualified in the technical bidding round.
The project, which must be completed by March 30, 2028, will be developed on a build, own, operate, and transfer basis.
POWERGRID must develop a 400 kV and a 765 kV bus section-II through a sectionalizer arrangement. It must include a 220 kV bus section-3 with a sectionalizer arrangement at the Mandsaur pooling substation.
The project entails augmenting the substation’s transformation capacity.
POWERGRID must provide a 220 kV line bay for interconnection with Waaree Renewable Technologies’ solar project, a 400 kV line for interconnection with NTPC Renewable Energy’s solar project, a 220 kV line bay for interconnection with JSP Green’s wind project, and a 220 kV line bay for interconnection with TEQ Green Power’s hybrid project.
All the line bays must be located at the Mandsaur pooling station.
POWERGRID must provide compensation for the project land.
It must conduct surveys, prepare detailed project reports, arrange finance, and conduct project management as part of the scope of work.
POWERGRID must also obtain all consents, clearances, and permits. These include way leave, environment, forest, civil aviation, railway/road/river/canal/power crossing/power, and telecommunication coordination committee clearances.
Recently, POWERGRID won REC Power Development and Consultancy’s (RECPDCL) auction to develop an ISTS to evacuate 3.7 GW of power from pumped storage projects in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh.
In August 2025, POWERGRID received a letter of intent from RECPDCL to establish an ISTS in Karnataka to integrate renewable energy generation.
