NTPC Renewable Energy (NREL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy (NGEL), has commissioned the third part of the 1.2 GW Khavda-II solar project in Gujarat.
NREL is developing two large-scale solar parks. A 4.75 GW solar park is being developed at Khavda, , and a 630 MW solar park at Barethi, Madhya Pradesh. These projects are designed to contribute significantly to the company’s renewable energy portfolio.
Recently, the company commissioned 165 MW capacity at the same project.
The company is also executing 356 MW/2136 MWh battery storage projects, while an additional 6.35 GW/31.9 GWh of storage capacity is in the tendering phase.
With the commissioning of this additional solar capacity, NGEL’s commercial capacity has increased from 9.29 GW to 9.56 GW. NGEL has 34 commissioned projects with 38 more under execution. The company is executing renewable and hydro projects with a combined capacity exceeding 11 GW, while an additional 20 GW of projects are in various stages of tendering.
The development is part of NTPC’s ongoing efforts to expand solar energy generation and support India’s transition toward renewable energy sources.
The addition of the 270 MW solar capacity also affects the overall power generation capacity of the NTPC Group. After commissioning, the total installed capacity of the NTPC Group is 88.54 GW, while the commercial capacity is 87.46 GW.
Last December, NGEL commissioned 243.66 MW of the 1.25 GW Khavda-I Solar Project in Gujarat.
Earlier, the government authorized NTPC to invest up to ₹200 billion (~$2.32 billion) in its renewable energy subsidiaries, NGEL and NREL, as well as other joint ventures. The earlier investment cap was ₹75 billion (~$873.38 million).
