It’s not just big, power-guzzling industries that are shifting to solar; the healthcare sector is also increasingly adopting clean energy sources.
Established in 1983, Nair Hospital Dental College, a government hospital under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai, installed 100 kW of rooftop solar systems, saving approximately ₹1.2 million (~$13,612.6) to ₹1.3 million (~$14,728.5) annually.
Gujarat-based rooftop installer Imagine Powertree, which installed the rooftop systems, said the hospital chose to set up the project to save on power costs and pass the savings on to patients. The institution was racking up a monthly power bill of up to ₹1.5 million (~$17,015.7) before installing the solar systems, while running a college and hospital on its premises.
It installed rooftop systems on two of its buildings, setting up a 50 kW solar system on its older building and a 50 kW system on its newer one.
The solar solutions include a 20 kW solar gazebo and a 30 KW rooftop system on the older building, and a 25 kW solar gazebo and a 25 kW rooftop system on the new building. Solar gazebos enable the institution to use rooftop space for solar power generation and other purposes. The hospital plans to install a canteen on the rooftop space.
The gazebos are mounted on structures with vertical clearances of 3.5 m to 4.2 m.
Imagine designed and built the mounting structures for the rooftop solar systems to withstand Mumbai’s strong coastal winds. These structures have a coating thickness of 120 microns and have been designed to withstand a wind speed of 180 km/h.
The rooftop systems use Loom Solar’s bifacial TOPCon modules with 22% efficiency. These are coupled with Polycab’s 40 kW and 45 kW inverters.
The hospital expects to generate an average of 82,500 units per year, or 360-380 units per day. The rooftop solar systems will help the hospital reduce its grid dependence by up to 10%.
Since the rooftop system on the new building was installed on a 10-floor structure, the installer said that a larger portion of the project cost was cabling.
Shani Pandya, CEO at Imagine Powertree, said the hospital did not consider installing battery energy storage systems (BESS). “But we will be recommending the hospital to install BESS and reduce its dependence on diesel power generators.”
Mercom India hosts a multi-city C&I Clean Energy Meets across the country to spread awareness about the benefits of businesses shifting to solar energy. The event brings together renewable energy solution providers and C&I consumers on the same platform. The next event will be held in Bhubaneswar on November 14, 2025.
