Solar energy management company Kalpa Power has launched WATTBANK, a productized battery energy storage (BESS) service for commercial and industrial businesses.
The BESS, integrated with a 130 kW solar installation system, powers the Amar Business Zone in Pune, Maharashtra.
WATTBANK claims to provide 50% savings on evening peak tariffs from day one.
The BESS charges during the day using solar energy and automatically supplies power during the peak evening hours. It also helps businesses manage fluctuations in electricity demand, improve grid stability, and reduce overloading issues.
Kalpa Power said WATTBANK enables businesses to achieve direct savings of ₹8 million (~$90,080) to ₹80 million (~$900,800) per year for a 1 MW facility.
The 130 kW solar installation features a 100 kW solar array, connected to the 120 kWh BESS. The remaining 30 kW is connected to the BESS and is utilized to charge the battery.
The 100 kW solar panels generate approximately 400-450 units of energy per day.
The BESS will operate for four cycles per day.
WATTBANK’s service model includes energy audit, right-sized storage design, end-to-end implementation, 24/7 data visibility, and life cycle management.
The BESS utilizes lithium-iron-phosphate batteries and has been designed for a 25-year lifespan.
According to Rounak Muthiyan, Founder and Director at Kalpa Power, the BESS enables power to be delivered when it is required, not just when it is available, directly addressing the variability of solar energy and ensuring clients have 24/7 access to clean, reliable electricity.
Kalpa Power provides end-to-end solutions spanning design, engineering, asset management, and engineering, procurement, and construction execution.
The company has an installed capacity of 330 MW across 195 projects, serving over 300 customers.
In an interview on the sidelines of the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2025, Muthiyan outlined Kalpa Power’s roadmap to commission 200 MW in the short term and achieve a goal of 5 GW within three years.
According to Mercom India’s India Solar Market Leaderboard 2025, Kalpa Power was one of the leading rooftop solar installers in India in 2024.
