India’s Solar Power Generation Rises 45.9% YoY to 62.8 BU in Q2 2026

Rajasthan and Gujarat accounted for 53.7% of the country’s solar generation during the quarter

India generated approximately 62.8 billion units (BU) of solar power in Q2 2026, increasing 45.9% year-over-year (YoY) from 43 BU in Q2 2025, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Solar generation rose 20.2% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) from 52.2 BU in Q1 2026, supported by a record 15.3 GW of installations in Q1 2026, including 12.6 GW of large-scale solar capacity.

Generation remained consistently strong throughout Q2, totaling 20.9 BU in April, 21.6 BU in May, and 20.3 BU in June.

Gujarat and Rajasthan accounted for approximately 40% and 39% of the large-scale additions during the first quarter, respectively.

Rajasthan remained the leading solar power-generating state, contributing 19.4 BU, equivalent to 30.9% of the national total. Generation in the state increased 21% QoQ and 22% YoY.

Gujarat followed with 14.3 BU, accounting for 22.8% of the country’s solar generation. The state recorded the strongest growth among the leading markets, with generation increasing 36.1% QoQ and 141.6% YoY. Together, Rajasthan and Gujarat contributed approximately 33.7 BU during the quarter.

Tamil Nadu generated 6.4 BU, accounting for 10.1% of total generation, up 13.4% QoQ and 35% YoY. Karnataka contributed 6 BU, representing 9.5% of the total, with generation rising 15% QoQ and 45.3% YoY.

Maharashtra generated approximately 3.6 BU during the quarter, accounting for 5.7% of the national total. Generation increased 8% QoQ and 56% YoY. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra together accounted for approximately 79% of India’s solar generation in Q2 2026.

The northern region generated the most solar power during the quarter at 22.3 BU, accounting for 35.5% of the national total. The western region followed with 21.2 BU, representing 33.8%, while the southern region generated 18.6 BU, accounting for 29.7%. The eastern and northeastern regions contributed 0.8% and 0.2%, respectively.

Solar generation increased across all regions compared with the previous quarter, reflecting both capacity additions and seasonally strong solar irradiation during the quarter. Generation in the northern, western, southern, eastern, and northeastern regions rose 20.5%, 26.8%, 13.6%, 8.4%, and 12.6%, QoQ, respectively.

During 1H 2026, solar power generation totaled approximately 115 BU, up 35.2% from 85.1 BU in the same period last year.

The increase coincided with the continued expansion of the country’s operational solar capacity. As of June 2026, India’s cumulative installed solar capacity reached 163.7 GW, increasing 40.7% YoY. Solar accounted for 29.7% of India’s total installed power capacity and 56.4% of its renewable energy capacity.
