As India works toward its goal of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources and achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, the focus is shifting increasingly to domestic solar manufacturing. Developing a robust, self-reliant supply chain for solar modules and cells has become a critical priority, not only for meeting deployment goals but also for reducing import dependence and enhancing energy security.
The country added 25.3 GW of solar module capacity and 11.6 GW of solar cell capacity in 2024, according to Mercom’s “State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 2025” report. While India’s manufacturing capabilities are expanding, it still has a long way to go to meet the rising demand.
A high-level panel discussion on “Domestic Cell and Module Production: Meeting Demand, Competing on Quality and Price” will be part of Mercom India’s fifth Renewables Summit, taking place on July 24–25, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi.
Panelists will include Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Prashant Mathur, CEO at Saatvik Solar, Suhas Donthi, President and CEO at Emmvee Group, and Avinash Hiranandani, Vice Chairman & Managing Director at RenewSys India.
The session will address key challenges and opportunities around scaling domestic manufacturing to meet growing demand while maintaining competitiveness in terms of quality and cost.
The session will also explore the current demand-supply dynamics, the upcoming Approved List of Models and Manufacturers mandate for solar cells, which is set to take effect in 2026, and the evolving manufacturing landscape in India within the context of global competition and trade realities.
The 2025 Renewables Summit features three side events: the Mercom India Awards, the Cleantech Startup Pitch Competition, and the inaugural Renewable Energy Exhibition.
The Startup Pitch Competition will offer startups the opportunity to showcase their technology solutions to potential investors.
The Mercom India Awards honor outstanding achievements and the latest technological innovations driving the transformation of India’s energy markets.
The Exhibition will offer a platform to connect with industry leaders, discover new business opportunities, and enhance brand visibility. The exhibition will have renewable energy companies showcasing a wide range of cutting-edge solutions and services.
