Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, Honda Motor, has made an equity investment in OMC Power, a distributed power supply and mini-grid business, to develop clean energy storage batteries jointly.
Honda Motor did not disclose the financial details of the stake acquisition.
The investment will be used to advance innovative business models in energy storage and battery repurposing from the electric mobility ecosystem.
The partnership between the two companies will aim to accelerate its goal of reaching a 1 GW clean energy portfolio.
OMC Power plans to launch a leasing business for an uninterruptible power supply device using the Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, a portable, swappable battery, in January 2026.
For the leasing business, Honda Power Pack Energy India that provides a battery-sharing service, will supply OMC Power with the Honda Mobile Power Pack e:.
OMC Power will package the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: with its UPS device and offer it for lease to households, small businesses, schools, and other facilities.
With this UPS device, the battery will be charged from the grid when available. The charged battery will supply electricity when grid power is unstable or unavailable, enabling customers to use electricity more reliably without interruption.
The partnership between the two companies will focus on repurposing Honda’s detachable and portable batteries, originally used in electric two- and three-wheelers, for innovative storage-based clean energy solutions.
OMC Power and Honda have been conducting demonstration testing of the UPS device using Honda Mobile Power Pack e: in Uttar Pradesh since 2023.
By integrating with OMC’s systems, these batteries will provide reliable power to remote schools, clinics, telecom towers, small businesses, and rooftop solar installations.
Minoru Kato, Executive Officer and Chief Officer for Motorcycle and Power Products Operations at Honda Motor, said the company will strive to establish a resource-circulating value chain by facilitating the repurposing of end-of-life electric motorcycle batteries.
The partnership will also complement OMC’s four core business areas: rooftop hybrid solar solutions, energy storage for telecom infrastructure, solar energy systems for commercial and industrial customers, and mini-grid technologies.
In 2024, OMC Power won 10 MW in Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency’s auction to set up 500 MW of grid-connected rooftop solar projects on government/semi-government buildings and other institutions in Uttar Pradesh. The project covers more than 200 hospitals and medical colleges.
At the fifth annual Mercom India Awards, OMC Power won the Best Off-Grid Project award for its repurposed EV battery-based inverter solution tailored for rural energy access.
