France has installed 29.7 GW of solar capacity from over 1.3 million installations as of September 30, 2025, according to the country’s Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES). This was a 10.5% year-over-year (YoY) growth compared to 26.8 GW from nearly 1.2 million installations.

Approximately one-third of the newly-connected capacity in 2025 comprised solar installations larger than 500 kW. This represents 0.2% of the total new connections. Installations under 9 kW accounted for 86% of new installations and 13% of new capacity.

Project pipeline capacity increased by 15% since the final quarter of 2024, reaching 36.9 GW. Of this capacity, 8.4 GW had signed connection agreements.

These volumes represent connection requests submitted to network operators and do not necessarily correspond to the volumes that will be put into service.

An additional 4.5 GW of capacity from 155,985 installations was connected to the country’s grid in the first nine months (9M) of 2025, increasing 21.6% compared to 3.7 GW from 199,315 installations in the same period in the preceding year.

Solar projects generated 28.6 TWh during 9M 2025, rising 35% YoY from 21.2 TWh.

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions made up 46% of the newly connected capacity in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025. These regions already represent 51% of France’s total capacity.

In Q3, 60% of solar installations, representing 16% of the installed capacity, generated energy that was either partially or fully self-consumed. These installations were 1.9 % points higher than in Q2 2025, and the installed capacity exceeded that in the previous quarter by 0.8 % points.

Solar energy totaling 1,173 GWh was self-consumed by producers in Q3, accounting for 10% of the electricity produced during this quarter. Installations completely consuming their generated energy produced 255 GWh, or 22% of the total self-consumed electricity. These installations represented 13% of the metropolitan self-consumption capacity and 8% of the total metropolitan capacity.

Recently, France’s Ministry of Energy Transition awarded a combined capacity of 507.7 MW across 36 solar projects under the fourth round of its technology-neutral renewables tender. The tender was floated for a total capacity of 500 MW.

A majority of European solar markets experienced declining pricing trends for solar power purchase agreements. In Q2 2025, P25 solar prices, which are the 25th percentile of offered prices in power purchase agreements, reduced by over 5% in Europe, according to LevelTen Energy’s Market-Averaged Continental Index report.
