Electricity is a significant operating expense for food processing and manufacturing companies because production lines, refrigeration systems, cold storage, and utility equipment can run for extended hours to ensure continuous production.

Installing on-site solar solutions can help companies lower electricity costs, reduce dependence on grid-supplied power, and limit exposure to future tariff hikes. Solar projects can also help companies meet sustainability targets and reduce the carbon footprint of their operations.

A recent example of the impact solar solutions can have on manufacturing companies is the 2,272 kW solar project installed by Flex Foods at its facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

The company manufactures and processes mushrooms, herbs, fruits, and vegetables in freeze-dried, air-dried, individually quick-frozen, and canned forms.

Sunkind India developed and installed the project, which combines rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems to utilize the available space at the facility.

To reduce its electricity bills, the company chose to install solar power systems. Before the installation, its monthly electricity expenditure was approximately ₹1.3 million (~$13,628).

The project is expected to reduce Flex Foods’ electricity costs by about ₹1 million (~$10,483) per month.

The installation uses Navitas Solar modules and Sungrow inverters.

The project team faced manpower constraints because of the location. Sunkind managed workforce deployment and site coordination to complete the installation

In July, Sunkind India installed a 2,909 kW rooftop solar system for packaging materials and solutions company Uflex at its facility in Dharwad, Karnataka. Before the rooftop project was installed, the facility’s monthly electricity expenditure was approximately ₹2.5 million (~$25,902). The rooftop solar project is expected to reduce Uflex’s electricity costs by about ₹1.5 million (~$15,541) per month.

Rooftop solar installations accounted for 18% of India’s total solar installations during Q1 2026, according to Mercom India’s Q1 2026 India Rooftop Solar Market Report.

Mercom India also hosts a pan-India C&I Clean Energy Meet series, bringing renewable energy developers and commercial and industrial power consumers together to discuss clean energy adoption. The next event in the series will be held in Hyderabad on August 21, 2026.
