CMI Educational Institutions has commissioned 294 kW of rooftop solar installations across multiple campuses in Kerala, helping the group reduce electricity costs and adopt cleaner energy.

SOL Energy Projects implemented the projects at Kristu Jyoti CMI Institutions in Changanacherry in Kottayam, Christ Nagar CMI Group of Schools in Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Christ CMI College in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram.

The installations include 120 kW at Changanacherry, 144 kW at Kowdiar, and 30 kW at Vizhinjam.

The primary motivation for going solar was to reduce high electricity bills while providing clean energy across the campuses.

Before the installations, the institutions reported monthly electricity expenses of approximately ₹400,000 (~$4,295) for the 120 kW site, ₹200,000 (~$2,147) for the 144 kW site, and ₹45,000 (~$483) for the 30 kW site.

Following the commissioning of the solar systems, the campuses are expected to achieve monthly savings of up to ₹150,000 (~$1,611), ₹180,000 (~$1,933), and ₹45,000 (~$483), respectively. The projects are estimated to have a payback period of approximately 4.4 years.

The installations use AXITEC solar modules paired with SolarEdge grid inverters equipped with optimizers, mounted on Tata GI structures. The use of module-level power electronics enables panel-level monitoring, allowing institutions to track each module’s output and quickly identify faults.

Given that all sites are educational institutions, safety was a key consideration. The systems incorporate rapid-shutdown features that help mitigate electrical hazards on the solar side.

SOL Energy Projects noted that a standardized technology approach was adopted across all campuses to enable easier monitoring and consistent system performance.

Educational institutions are among the many organizations increasingly adopting solar energy to meet their electricity demands, reduce electricity bills, and leave a greener energy footprint.

Mercom India hosts a pan-India ‘C&I Clean Energy Meet’ series, bringing renewable energy developers and commercial and industrial power consumers together to discuss options for adopting renewable energy. The next event will be held in Mumbai on April 16, 2026.
