China added 152.5 GW of solar power capacity in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, a 168.8% year-over-year (YoY) growth from 56.74 GW, according to the National Energy Administration.

The country’s cumulative installed capacity reached 1.1 TW as of June 2025.

Its solar installations for the first half (1H) of 2025 stood at 212.21 GW, a 107% YoY increase from 102.48 GW during the same period last year.

Installations, however, dropped in June, with only 14.36 GW added.

China added 51.39 GW of wind energy capacity in 1H 2025, and 25.78 GW of thermal capacity.

The country did not add any nuclear power capacity during the quarter.

As of the end of June, the total installed capacity of power generation reached 3,650 GW, up 18.7% YoY.

Companies invested CN¥363.5 billion (~$51 billion) in power projects, a 5.9% increase from the first half of last year. Investment in power grid reached CN¥291.1 billion (~$41 billion), a 14.6% YoY increase.

As of March 2025, the country’s cumulative installed solar power capacity reached 950 GW. Its major power generation companies invested CN¥132.2 billion (~$18.09 billion) in power projects, a 2.5% decrease from the same period the previous year.

China’s Investment in power grid expansion reached CN¥95.6 billion (~$13.08 billion), a 24.8% rise from 2024.

According to the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, the country’s solar installations were forecasted to drop by up to 22% in 2025 with the introduction of market-based pricing reforms, after six consecutive years of growth.

Solar installations were expected to decline in 2025 to between 215 GW and 255 GW, a decrease of 8.13% to 22.54% from 277 GW in 2024. The feed-in tariff regime had enabled China to expand its renewable energy capacity rapidly. Renewables comprise over 40% of the country’s power generation capacity.
