Singapore-based Blueleaf Energy, owned by the Macquarie Asset Management Fund, in partnership with Universal Peak, has been selected by Malaysia’s Energy Commission to build and operate a 100 MW/400 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system.

The Blueleaf-Universal Peak consortium bagged the project in an auction that involved 28 bids, of which four were selected.

The project is a part of the inaugural Malaysia battery energy storage system (MyBeST) program. The program is the largest government initiative to deploy grid-connected BESS in peninsular Malaysia to date.

Scheduled for commissioning in 2027, the project will play an important role in strengthening Malaysia’s national grid and accelerating the country’s transition to clean energy.

The MyBest program, initiated by the government, is an important component of the National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims to achieve 70% of renewable energy capacity by 2050.

Blueleaf Energy has 1.3 GW of renewable energy under operation with nearly 7.6 GW in the pipeline. It has nearly 3.3 GWh of storage projects in the pipeline. As of the second quarter of 2025, Blueleaf had approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind projects in India at the early stages of development.

The Energy Commission said that the selected projects use diverse battery technologies, enabling assessment of performance under Malaysia’s unique grid and climatic conditions.

In October last year, the company signed an agreement with UK-based development finance institution and impact investor British International Investment to invest $75 million in India’s energy transition. Blueleaf said it will receive the funding from British International Investment to continue investing in and expanding its renewable energy assets in India. This initiative aims to contribute approximately 2 GW of installed renewable energy capacity in the country.

Earlier, Blueleaf Energy and Noida-based Jakson Green had announced the financial closure of 840 MW ground-mounted solar projects in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The capacity comprised a 280 MW and a 560 MW project.
