Adani Energy Solutions (AESL) has delivered 10 million smart electricity meters to distribution companies (DISCOM), with another 10 million deliveries expected in the coming financial year.

AESL said it completed the installation of these smart meters within 24 months.

The company has secured a mandate to install an estimated 25 million smart meters across five states.

In 2024, Airtel Business, the B2B arm of Bharti Airtel, announced that it would supply Internet of Things solutions to power over 20 million smart meters for AESL.

AESL’s 20 million smart meter order book is spread across power utilities of Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand.

AESL has also tied up with sister firms, such as Adani Esyasoft Smart Solutions’ smart metering and AdaniConneX, for local data hosting. AdaniConneX is a 50:50 joint venture between Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of the Adani Group, and data center provider EdgeConneX.

Additionally, AESL has signed up with tier I meter brands to ensure delivery timelines and manage platform relevance during the contract period.

Smart meters are designed to enhance billing accuracy, improve demand forecasting, reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses, support the integration of renewable energy resources, and inform grid design and operations. They also provide consumption-side input.

AESL’s order book stands at over 24.6 million smart meters.

India aims to replace 250 million conventional electricity meters with smart meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

The Ministry of Power (MoP) reported that 47.6 million smart meters have been installed across the country as of November 15, 2025, under various programs, while 203.3 million meters have been approved under the RDSS program based on proposals submitted by the states.

Last year, MoP hinted at a two-year extension of the RDSS program, which is nearing its sunset in the financial year (FY) 2026. It informed the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Energy that the ₹3.3 trillion (~$40.35 billion) RDSS program, which was to end in FY 2026, needs an extension until FY 2028.
