In the third quarter (Q3) of 2026, agencies announced 21 GW of renewable energy tenders and auctioned 12 GW of capacity across energy storage, hybrid, large-scale solar, wind, manufacturing, green hydrogen, and rooftop solar projects.

Battery energy storage and hybrid projects together accounted for 45.2% of the capacity auctioned during the quarter, showing the growing role of storage-linked and profile-based renewable energy procurement.

According to the report, energy storage was the largest tendered segment during 9M 2026, accounting for 40% of total tendered capacity. The growing share of storage procurement reflects increasing emphasis on integrating renewable energy with flexible capacity to improve grid reliability and meet peak electricity demand.

Agencies issued approximately 66 GW of renewable energy tenders and auctioned 28 GW of capacity during the first nine months (9M) of 2026.

Mercom India’s analysis indicates that procurement is increasingly being driven by when and how power can be delivered, not just by the amount of capacity added. Storage and hybrid projects are taking a larger role, while the gap between tendered and auctioned capacity highlights the pace at which projects move from tender to award. Buyer requirements, transmission availability, project financing, and commercially viable project structures will continue to influence that pace.
