					</table><p>The net-zero industry will need exponential growth from carbon capture, hydrogen, and clean power technologies, a recent report by BloombergNEF (<a href="https://about.bnef.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BNEF</a>) said.</p>
<p>The report singled out carbon capture technologies to play a crucial role in the decarbonizing industry. However, it noted that transitioning to the net-zero industry would require significant investments in new technologies and infrastructure.</p>
<p>Industrial production is responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, making decarbonization of industry a crucial component of any effective climate change mitigation strategy.</p>
<p>The report added that carbon capture will play a major role in decarbonizing the cement industry, which is responsible for significant emissions due to the chemical process of converting limestone to lime.</p>
<p>Hydrogen technologies will likely play a central role in decarbonizing steel and petrochemical industries as feedstock and heat sources.</p>
<p>The report said that while electrification and hydrogen pathways are the most likely technologies to compete with existing production routes on cost, hydrogen will only become widely available around 2035.</p>
<p>The report also said that fuel switching, bioenergy, recycling, and carbon capture can deliver emissions reductions today and are deployed earlier in BNEF’s least-cost modeling, helping to keep global warming below two degrees.</p>
<p>As the producer of half of the world’s steel, aluminum, and cement, China is currently the most important factor in the push toward the net-zero industry.</p>
<p>While the country still needs to publish a definitive technology roadmap, its scaling power could change the economics of hydrogen or carbon capture for the rest of the world.</p>
<p>After exponential growth in materials production, output cuts and a focus on quality rather than quantity will give the country a start on its net-zero pathway, reducing emissions through declining production.</p>
<p>The United States is also well-positioned for decarbonization. Its steel sector is mostly electrified, and its petrochemical sector already has hydrogen and carbon capture expertise. The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act will make these technologies viable for industry through generous tax credits.</p>
<p>The global role of the US and Europe will be as a laboratory for net-zero production routes. Most early pilot projects for low-carbon production are in these regions and will be used as a model globally.</p>
<p>In the future, India will be the focus of the net-zero industry, as its industrial emissions are due to more than double by 2050.</p>
<p>The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/philanthropic-financing-to-per-year-to-reach-net-zero" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> a fundraising vehicle to unlock $3 trillion of financing needed each year to reach net zero, reverse nature loss, and restore biodiversity by 2050. The vehicle would focus on attracting philanthropic resources toward the net-zero targets.</p>
<p>The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cop27-4-trillion-renewable-funding-annually-net-zero-2050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highlighted</a> the need for global investments of $4 trillion per year in renewable energy until 2030 to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.</p>

Net-Zero Emission Goal Requires Exponential Growth in Key Technologies

					</table><p>The International Energy Agency (<a href="https://www.iea.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEA</a>) said in a report that limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels requires a rapid and profound transformation of the global energy system and significant mitigation actions in other sectors, such as land use and industry.</p>
<p>The report identifies four key pillars that are vital to delivering a credible pathway to 1.5 °C:</p>
<p>The first pillar highlighted the need for the energy sector, which accounts for about three-quarters of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 2020, requiring a significant shift from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources and electrification.</p>
<p>Further, it called for rapid phasing out of coal-fired power plants, a cessation of new oil and gas exploration and development, and a massive increase in energy efficiency and conservation measures.</p>
<p>The second pillar addresses the land-use sector, which is responsible for about a quarter of global GHG emissions. The report stresses the importance of halting deforestation by 2030 and reversing it after that, as forests are essential carbon sinks that can help remove CO2 from the atmosphere.</p>
<p>The report also urged more sustainable agricultural practices, such as reducing livestock fertilizer use and methane emissions and enhancing soil carbon sequestration.</p>
<p>The third pillar targeted non-CO2 GHGs, such as methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and black carbon, which have a much higher global warming potential than CO2 but a shorter atmospheric lifetime.</p>
<p>The report estimated that reducing these emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2020 could lower peak warming by up to 0.4 °C.</p>
<p>It recommended capturing methane leaks from oil and gas operations, banning venting and flaring, phasing out HFCs in refrigeration and air conditioning, and implementing stricter vehicle emissions and waste management standards .</p>
<p>The fourth pillar involves carbon management technologies, such as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture (DAC), and enhanced weathering.</p>
<p>These technologies can help remove CO2 from the atmosphere or prevent it from being emitted in the first place. The report acknowledged that these technologies are still in the early stages of development and face many technical, economic, and social challenges.</p>
<p>However, the report argued that they are indispensable for achieving net-zero emissions and harmful emissions by mid-century. It called for a tenfold increase in public spending on research, development, and demonstration of these technologies by 2030.</p>
<p>CCUS is critical for the energy sector to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2022, around 44 million tons of CO2 were captured globally. To align with net-zero emissions by 2050, global CO2 capture in the energy sector needs to increase to 1.2 Gt by 2030.</p>
<p>According to IEA, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/clean-energy-growth-co2-emissions-in-2022-iea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rose</a> by under 1% during 2022, which is lower than initially expected. Last October, the IEA had forecast that global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion would <a href="https://mercomindia.com/co2-emissions-from-fossil-drop-due-to-of-renewables-iea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">grow</a> by just under 1% this year as the substantial expansion of renewables and electric vehicles prevent a sharper rise.</p>

Rapid Renewable Uptake, Viable Carbon Capture Tech Pathways to 1.5°C Goal

					</table><p>Government think-tank <a href="https://www.niti.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NITI Aayog</a>’s latest study finds that carbon capture utilization and storage (<a href="https://dst.gov.in/carbon-capture-utilisation-and-storage-ccus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CCUS</a>) is key to ensuring sustainable development and growth in India, particularly for producing clean energy<em>.</em></p>
<p>CCUS is defined by the International Energy Agency (<a href="https://www.iea.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEA</a>) as a group of technologies for capturing CO2 from large and stationary CO2-emitting sources such as fossil fuel-based power plants and other industries.</p>
<p>These technologies become crucial in the context of India as the country is still dependent on fossil fuels.</p>
<p>The report titled ‘Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Policy Framework and its Deployment Mechanism in India’ explored the importance of CCUS as an emission reduction strategy to achieve decarbonization from the hard-to-abate sectors.</p>
<p>The report said that nearly two-thirds of India’s 144 metric tons per annum (mtpa) crude steel capacity and 210 GW of coal-based power capacity were installed less than 15 years ago.</p>
<p>These assets can’t be wished away or stranded and need to be made sustainable by retrofitting with carbon dioxide capture and disposition infrastructure, the report said.</p>
<p>Further, it added that significant economic costs, estimated to be in the range of $6 billion per year by 2050, can be avoided by implementing CCUS.</p>
<p>Additionally, even if India can substantially meet the target of 500 GW installed capacity of renewables by 2030, it would still require coal for generating baseload power demand, given the intermittency and non-dispatchable nature of solar and wind power.</p>
<p>“CCUS can enable the production of clean products while still utilizing our rich endowments of coal, reducing imports and thus leading to an Atmanirbhar Indian economy,” said Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog.</p>
<p>Dr. V.K Saraswat, a member of NITI Aayog, said India’s dependency on fossil-based energy resources is likely to continue in the future, which makes it necessary for the country to have a CCUS policy.</p>
<p>India is the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world after China and the U.S., with an estimated annual emissions of about 2.6 gigatons per annum (gtpa).</p>
<p>The role of CCUS also becomes a crucial strategy in emission reduction as the country has recently <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-long-term-low-carbon-development-strategy-cop27/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">updated</a> its nationally determined contribution (NDC) targets to achieve 50% of its total installed capacity from renewable energy sources and a 45% reduction in emission intensity by the end of the decade.</p>
<p><strong>CCUS application and advantages</strong></p>
<p>CCUS can be applied to various sectors hard-to-electrify and carbon dioxide-intensive sectors such as steel, cement, oil &amp; gas, petrochemicals &amp; chemicals, and fertilizers.</p>
<p>Further, it can be used in producing blue hydrogen, which is coal gasification-based hydrogen production coupled with CCUS, considering India’s rich endowments of coal.</p>
<p>Currently, blue hydrogen at the cost of around $2/kg is far more cost-effective than green hydrogen at $5-6/kg.</p>
<p>The report said that CCUS can help the circular economy as the captured carbon can be converted into various value-added products like green urea, building materials, chemicals and polymers with vast market opportunities in India.</p>
<p>The CCUS projects could capture 750 mtpa of carbon by 2050 and help create 8-10 million full-time jobs.</p>
<p>The report outlines a range of policy action the government can undertake to support CCUS. These include funding for research and development, creating national centers of excellence, support for manufacturing CCUS equipment in India, and adoption of the technology on a large scale.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://mercomindia.com/co2-emissions-from-fossil-drop-due-to-of-renewables-iea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in October, carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion globally are expected to grow by under 1% this year as the substantial expansion of renewables and electric vehicles prevents a sharper rise.</p>

Carbon Capture Key to Sustainable Development and Growth in India: NITI Aayog

<p><strong>The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy </strong><a href="https://mnre.gov.in/img/documents/uploads/file_f-1666951681035.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a> <strong>amendments to the tender provisions for empaneling vendors under Component B of the PM-KUSUM</strong> (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) program. Under component B, the target is to install 1.75 million standalone solar-powered agriculture pumps of individual capacity up to 7.5 HP. As per the new amendments, the rates discovered in the centralized tender will serve as a ceiling for any bids called by the state implementing agencies (SIAs). SIAs can implement their prices only in cases where prices have not been discovered in the centralized tender for that state, or there are not enough vendors through centralized tendering, or these vendors cannot complete timely installation. If the prices of the pumps of these capacities are discovered in the neighboring states or union territories, the same can serve as the ceiling price. Empaneled vendors who do not complete the installation of the pumps will be blacklisted for five years.</p>
<p><strong>Trident Group, a textiles and paper conglomerate, </strong><a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/5fd15fed-d468-48b0-8953-da9c03595a9d.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> that it has completed installing an 8.87 MW solar power project at Budhni, Madhya Pradesh.</strong> The project was commissioned in two phases &#8211; a 5.48 MW solar power project (Phase I) and a 3.39 MW solar power project (Phase II), for captive use. The power generated from the project would be consumed by manufacturing facilities located at Budhni, resulting in considerable savings for the company. The group aims to use renewable and clean energy to reduce carbon emissions.</p>
<p><strong>ArcelorMittal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, BHP, and Mitsubishi Development will </strong><a href="https://corporate.arcelormittal.com/media/news-articles/carbon-capture-in-the-steel-industry-arcelormittal-mitsubishi-heavy-industries-engineering-bhp-and-mitsubishi-development-sign-collaboration-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>collaborate</strong></a><strong> on a multi-year trial of carbon capture technology with ArcelorMittal.</strong> The trial involves ArcelorMittal&#8217;s steel plant in Ghent, Belgium, as well as another unspecified site in North America, and aims to identify means of enhancing the feasibility of carbon capture utilization and/or storage (CCUS) technologies in the global steelmaking industry. Currently, there are no full-scale operational CCUS facilities in blast furnace steelmaking operations, with only a limited number of small-capacity carbon capture or utilization pilots underway or in the planning phases globally. However, later this year, ArcelorMittal Gent will commission its Steelanol project, a scale demonstration plant that will capture carbon-rich process gases from the blast furnace and convert them into ethanol.</p>
<p><strong>Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), in line with the company&#8217;s ESG+ framework, has </strong><a href="https://www.ihcltata.com/press-room/ihcl-strengthens-focus-on-green-source-of-energy-with-installation-of-over-220-ev-charging-points-across-90-properties/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>installed</strong></a><strong> 224 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 92 properties. </strong>These EV charging points, in collaboration with Tata Power, are present across various Taj, SeleQtions, Vivanta, Ginger, and amã Stays &amp; Trails properties across the country. The move is aligned with IHCL&#8217;s commitment to cater to the evolving needs of its customers by reducing their carbon footprint in travel. These chargers can be accessed by guests staying at various IHCL properties.</p>
<p><strong>Hydrogen systems supplier Hexagon Purus and green hydrogen producer Lhyfe </strong><a href="https://www.lhyfe.com/press/commercial-cooperation-between-hexagon-purus-and-lhyfe-for-distribution-of-green-and-renewable-hydrogen-in-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>entered</strong></a><strong> into commercial cooperation to deliver Hexagon Purus&#8217; type 4 hydrogen distribution systems.</strong> As a result, Lhyfe can deliver a maximum of 19 tons of green hydrogen per trip, corresponding to the consumption of 650 transit buses. Type 4 hydrogen distribution system is a composite high-pressure cylinder technology used for bulk distribution of compressed hydrogen. Hexagon Purus&#8217; products are used in various applications, including light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, ground storage, distribution, refueling, maritime, rail, and aerospace. Lhyfe has a commercial pipeline representing a total production capacity of 9.8 GW by 2030.</p>

Daily News Wrap-Up: Tender Clauses Amended for KUSUM Solar Pumps Program

<p>Durgapur Projects (<a href="http://www.dpl.net.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DPL</a>) has issued a notice inviting tender for consultants to undertake a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report to install a green ecosystem. The ecosystem will include green hydrogen, carbon capture, and e-methanol production units in Durgapur, West Bengal.</p>
<p>The project must be completed within 60 days from the letter of award. The inception report must be submitted within 30 days of the work order and the draft feasibility report within 45 days. The final feasibility report must be submitted within seven days of receiving feedback from Durgapur Projects.</p>
<p>The last day to submit the bids is June 27, 2022. Bids will be opened on June 30.</p>
<p>Bidders must furnish an earnest money deposit of ₹68,000 (~$875). Successful bidders must submit a security deposit equivalent to 10% of the total project cost.</p>
<p>The scope of work includes conducting the feasibility study, defining the scope of utilization of green hydrogen and e-methanol, submitting capital expenditure and operational expenditure estimations, studying the potential demand of green hydrogen and e-methanol, identifying demand from target industries for both products, transportation study of green hydrogen and e-methanol, and project implementation strategy and time frame for project completion.</p>
<p>The project is divided into mandatory jobs and optional jobs. Bidders must quote for both parts. The successful bidder will be selected based on the total cost quoted for both parts.</p>
<p>Bidders should have undertaken engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, either directly or as sub-vendors in green hydrogen, carbon capture, or e-methanol units. Alternatively, they should have prepared a detailed project report for green hydrogen or carbon capture or e-methanol units, either as a direct consultant or sub-consultant.</p>
<p>Bidders must have experience executing three similar works, each costing not less than ₹1.36 million (~$17,515), two similar works each not less than ₹1.7 million (~$21,894), or one similar completed work of ₹2.72 million (~$35,035) during the last seven years.</p>
<p>The successful bidder will not be eligible to participate in the tender for the future EPC part of the project.</p>
<p>The bidders should have an annual turnover of ₹1.02 million (~$13,138) during the three last consecutive years. Their net worth should be positive for the last three financial years.</p>
<p>In April, Durgapur Projects <a href="https://mercomindia.com/epc-tender-floated-for-20-mw-of-solar-projects-in-west-bengal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> a notice inviting tender for the EPC and module manufacturing for 20 MW of grid-connected solar projects at its thermal power station.</p>
<p>Recently, Durgapur Projects <a href="https://mercomindia.com/tender-issued-for-a-5-mw-solar-project-in-west-bengal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floated</a> a tender for 5 MW of grid-connected ground-mounted solar projects in Durgapur on a turnkey basis. It had also <a href="https://mercomindia.com/epc-tender-issued-solar-west-bengal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> an EPC tender for a 7 MW solar project.</p>

Consultancy Tender Issued for Installing a Green Ecosystem in West Bengal

<p>A group of scientists from CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (<a href="https://iict.res.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CSIR-IICT</a>), Hyderabad, have designed a hybrid material to simulate capturing carbon dioxide in-situ (onsite) and converting it into clean hydrogen from non-fuel grade bioethanol.</p>
<p>The research details were published in the Elsevier scientific journal <a href="https://journals.elsevier.com/chemical-engineering-and-processing-process-intensification" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chemical Engineering and Processing</a>.</p>
<p>In a first for India, the scientists developed a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) facility in Hyderabad to perform sorption enhanced steam methane reforming (SESMR) to achieve clean hydrogen in its purest form. The facility was commissioned at CSIR-IICT in January this year.</p>
<p>The facility was commissioned under a Mission Innovation Project supported by the Department of Science and Technology.</p>
<p>The FBR system measures the performance of dual-functional materials for SESMR. The sorption enhanced steam methane reforming allows certain advantages of onsite carbon dioxide removal through sorbents, thereby overcoming the equilibrium restrictions of steam reforming, leading to clean hydrogen production.</p>
<p><strong>The procedure</strong></p>
<p>The researchers conducted a thermodynamic investigation using Aspen plus models (imperative programming language to study scientific computation) to discover two scientific schemes so that high purity hydrogen could be produced from non-fuel grade bioethanol.</p>
<p>The two schemes are based on the sorption process where a gas or vapor (sorbate) is captured or fixated by a substance in a condensed state (solid or liquid) called sorbent. The two methods studied by the team are chemical looping combustion (CLC) integrated processes; sorption enhanced steam reforming (CLC-SESR) and sorption enhanced chemical looping reforming (CLC-SECLR).</p>

<p>The two schemes are energy-wise self-sustainable. The heat and power demand in the two processes are achieved by integrating them with heat recovery, steam generation, and power generation mechanisms.</p>
<p><strong>99.13% and 99.58% efficiency in carbon capture</strong></p>
<p>The efficiency of carbon capture achieved by the IICT scientists was 99.13% and 99.58%. The purity level of hydrogen obtained in the process was 99.15% and 99.71%, with an energy efficiency of 39.47% and 37.30%.</p>
<p>The optimal hydrogen yield achieved by the team was 97.38%, and 82.45% after a demonstrated efficacy of the above two schemes in facilitating low temperature reforming of partially distilled bioethanol of 14 mole % (34.5% by volume), with a concentration maintained at 550 degrees and 500 degrees celsius.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/indian-scientists-discover-special-types-of-nanoparticles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demonstrated</a> a strategy to synthesize novel solid absorbents, to capture and utilize carbon specifically. The group discovered particular types of nanoparticles which capture carbon dioxide in their micro and mesoporous voids.</p>
<p>Many research institutes across the globe are focused on studies to capture carbon and control or reduce carbon emissions. Earlier this month, a U.S.-based electric public utility company, Cleco Power, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/daily-news-wrap-up-heidelbergcement-commissions-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> an allocation of $12 million to develop a carbon capture facility in Lousiana’s Brame Energy Center.</p>

Indian Scientists Produce Clean H<sub>2</sub> With Carbon Capture Efficiency of 99.58%

<p>Here are some noteworthy cleantech announcements of the day from around the world:</p>
<p><strong>In a press note, the All-India Solar Industries Association (AISIA), the domestic solar manufacturing association, has asked the government to support the manufacturers with focused measures</strong>. The Association has requested “priority sector” status for lending to the manufacturing of solar similar to the development of solar projects and push “green manufacturing” with 100% solar power providing for 30 days banking. They have asked for the removal of duties for three years on equipment required to manufacture solar cells and modules and incentivize exports. In cases where government extends “pass-through” and “grandfathering” of projects, the Association demands equal opportunities for manufacturers.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.tatapower.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Tata Power</strong></a><strong> has collaborated with </strong><a href="https://www.enviroindia.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Enviro</strong></a><strong> &#8211; the facility management wing of the real estate developer Vatika Group to install 59 EV charging points at its properties across Gurugram, Haryana.</strong> The EV chargers will be installed at 18 locations across the properties of Vatika Group in Gurugram. These chargers will be made available as Public Charging Stations and Semi-Public based on the nature of the premises.</p>
<p><strong>Sungrow, the inverter and energy storage system supplier, </strong><a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/il/news-releases/sungrow-to-supply-israel-s-largest-standalone-energy-storage-project-888947610.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>signed</strong></a><strong> a contract with Afcon, an Israel-based electro-mechanical and green energy solutions provider,</strong> to supply the company&#8217;s latest liquid-cooled energy storage system solution to a 16 MW/64 MWh project in Israel. The project is integrated with the Dalia Power Station &#8211; the country&#8217;s largest privately contracted power plant. The energy storage project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023. Sungrow will provide its ST2752UX energy storage system unit and its power conversion system (PCS) SC5000UD-MV, enclosures, and maintenance services on this tranche of the project.</p>
<p><strong>LanzaTech NZ, an innovative Carbon Capture and Transformation (CCT) company, and AMCI Acquisition Corp. II, a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), </strong><a href="https://lanzatech.com/investor-relations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a> that they have agreed to merge through a business combination transaction. Upon closing the transaction, the combined company will be renamed LanzaTech Global, Inc. Its common stock is expected to be listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “LNZA.” LanzaTech is expected to be the first CCT company to access the public capital markets. Evercore Group serves as an exclusive financial advisor to AMCI and  Barclays Capital as an exclusive financial advisor and capital markets advisor to LanzaTech.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.quantron.net/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Quantron AG</strong></a><strong>, a Germany-based e-mobility company, recorded sales of </strong><strong>€10 million in 2021, increasing around 500% compared to the 2020 figures.</strong> Quantron AG is a system provider of clean battery-electric and hydrogen-electric e-mobility for commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, and vans. Among other things, the company focuses on converting used and existing vehicles to zero-emission powertrains. In 2021, Quantron delivered 30 zero-emission vehicles to IKEA.</p>
<p><strong>Enel, a European utility company, </strong><a href="https://www.enel.com/media/explore/search-press-releases/press/2022/03/enel-and-santander-sign-their-first-global-deal-to-support-clients-clean-energy-transition" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>signed</strong></a><strong> a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Santander, an investment banking firm, promoting collaboration between the two groups </strong>to supply and finance solar facilities, lithium batteries, and energy efficiency solutions for households, SMEs, and corporations. Under the MoU, Enel, through Enel X Global Retail, the Group&#8217;s advanced energy services business line, will design customized turnkey solutions for clients. At the same time, Santander will provide them with tailored financing. The two groups will help accelerate the energy transition of clients towards more sustainable models by supporting them in the optimization of their energy consumption.</p>

Daily News Wrap-Up: Industry Body Asks for Priority Sector Lending for Solar Manufacturing

<p><strong>Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (</strong><a href="https://www.powergrid.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>PGCIL</strong></a><strong>) was declared the winner under the tariff-based competitive bidding to establish a transmission system</strong> for evacuation of power from solar energy zones in Rajasthan (8.1 GW) under Phase-II -Part-G on build, own, operate, and maintain basis. The Transmission system comprises the establishment of a new 765/400kV GIS Substation at Narela (NCT of Delhi) and 765kV D/C Transmission Lines in Rajasthan, Haryana, and NCT of Delhi.</p>
<p><strong>Adani Renewable Energy Holding Fifteen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), </strong><a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/d330f3d9-fffd-45a2-b640-9fc0fa632d06.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>received</strong></a><strong> a letter of award to set up a 150 MW solar power project</strong> from Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL). The fixed tariff for the project capacity was ₹2.34 (~$0.03)/kWh for 25 years. The tender initially issued by PSPCL was to procure 250 MW solar power from ground-mounted grid-connected solar power plants. AGEL now has a cumulative renewable energy project portfolio of 20.4 GW capacity, out of which 5.4 GW projects are operational, 11.6 GW are under construction, and 3.4 GW projects are in the pipeline.</p>
<p><a href="https://prescinto.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Prescinto Technologies</strong></a><strong>, a clean energy artificial energy platform, partnered with CAPEX solution provider Integrum Energy for real-time monitoring and analytics of their wind and solar projects.</strong> The process includes digital transformation of their 100 MW assets across India. Integrum will leverage Prescinto’s platform for actionable intelligence on their wind, solar and hybrid portfolio. Prescinto provides a cloud-based asset agnostic platform that can remotely fetch data from the wind turbines and solar plants, visualize it and provide insights to improve generation. With this, Prescinto onboards more than 2 GW wind power projects taking the total to 12 GW.</p>
<p><strong>U.S.-based coal producer Peabody Energy </strong><a href="https://www.peabodyenergy.com/Home/Company-News-1109" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> its first step into the renewable energy sector through a new joint venture.</strong> It is launching R3 Renewables with Riverstone Credit Partners and Summit Partners Credit Advisors to develop 3.3 GW solar energy and 1.6 GW of battery storage capacity over the next five years. R3 Renewables will be engaged in developing six potential sites on large tracts of land on or near previous coal mining operations in Indiana and Illinois. The portfolio size and strategic site locations, each of which is near grid injection points, offer the potential to develop the largest solar and battery storage projects in both Indiana and Illinois.</p>
<p><strong>Shell Energy Operations, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell, </strong><a href="https://www.shell.com.au/media/2022-media-releases/shell-australia-makes-first-investment-in-wind-through-49-percent-share.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> it had signed an agreement to acquire 49% of Australian wind farm developer, WestWind Energy Development</strong>, which has a 3 GW project pipeline across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. This will be Shell Australia’s first investment in wind energy. The investment is expected to complete in 2022 and is subject to regulatory approvals. Shell has not disclosed the financial details of its acquisition.</p>
<p><strong>ExxonMobil </strong><a href="https://corporate.exxonmobil.com/News/Newsroom/News-releases/2022/0301_ExxonMobil-planning-hydrogen-production-carbon-capture-and-storage-at-Baytown-complex" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> its plans for a hydrogen production plant and one of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage projects </strong>at its integrated refining and petrochemical site at Baytown, Texas. The initiative will support the company’s efforts to reduce emissions from operations and local industry. The proposed hydrogen facility would produce up to 1 billion cubic feet per day of “blue” hydrogen produced from natural gas and supported by carbon capture and storage. The carbon capture infrastructure for this project would have the capacity to transport and store up to 10 million metric tons of CO2 per year, more than doubling ExxonMobil’s current capacity.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.luminousindia.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Luminous</strong></a><strong> Power Technologies announced the launch of a new inverter series, “Li-ON,” an integrated inverter with Lithium-ion batteries.</strong> Li-ON 1250 will be offered as a single unit with an inverter and integrated Li-ion battery encapsulated in a cabinet. With the new Li-ON battery, the Li-ON series of inverters promise enhanced performance with an extended battery life which will be three times better than conventional battery-based inverters. Additionally, the Li-ON series will support fast charging &#8211; completing full charge in just 4 hours. The new 1100 VA inverter can run a maximum of 880W of load with a backup time of more than three hours with 50% load.</p>

<p><a href="https://carboncapture.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carbon Capture</a>, a climate tech company that makes machines to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, said it had raised $35 million in a Series A funding round. With this fresh funding, the company has secured over $43 million in equity funding to date.</p>
<p>Prime Movers Lab led the funding round. Rio Tinto, Idealab Studio, Idealab X, Marc Benioff’s Time Ventures, and several other venture capital companies and family offices participated in the funding round.</p>
<p>The company will use the funds to enhance its product development efforts and initial deployments of its renewable energy-powered (solar and geothermal) Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems in locations across the US.</p>
<p>Carbon Capture also appointed Adrian Corless as Chief Executive Officer of the company.</p>
<p>The company said it had developed a set of technical innovations that use zeolites for capturing carbon dioxide as part of a commercial DAC system. Zeolites are inorganic, inexpensive, long-lasting, and non-toxic molecular sieves. Zeolites are manufactured in large quantities for several industrial applications, removing a significant barrier for the economic scaling of DAC to gigaton levels.</p>
<p>According to the company, these DAC systems are tunable and can be set to capture between 1 and 5 tons of pure water for each ton of carbon dioxide captured from the air. In addition, DAC systems can decline carbon dioxide output purity to align with storage strategies that do not require food-grade purity, such as injection into building materials, mine tailings, or geologic formations that mineralize carbon dioxide.</p>
<p>Corless said, “I am excited about the opportunity to lead Carbon Capture. This funding, in combination with our transformative technology and top-tier commercial partners, provides us with all of the necessary ingredients to quickly become the leading DAC company in the US.”</p>
<p>Commenting on the investment, Brandon Simmons, general partner at Prime Movers Lab, said, “By 2050, DAC companies will capture upwards of 5 to 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We are honored to participate in the very early stages of a new $500 billion-plus industry.”</p>
<p>In August 2021, Prime Movers Lab <a href="https://mercomindia.com/storage-energy-vault-raises-million/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">participated</a> in Energy Vault’s Series C funding round. Energy Vault raised $100 million in Series C funding.</p>
